Gillette: 1960's flare tip super speed - Shark super stainless blade - Raktual shaving soap
I'm reviewing a Shark super stainless razor blade in this video manufactured in Egypt by the Lord company. I've picked a razor blade that is not one of the usual suspects in order to introduce a little variety to my own shave and to highlight some razor blades that are maybe not seen so often as others.
Thanks to Dan, this week, from Vintage Life who hosts a very interesting channel:

Good day Mark, I've had good results with the Shark, meaning virtually no razor burn. As for the Proraso, Jim Will Shave says it's cheap as chips in Italy. 1 Euro.....I paid ten times more in Canada! I'll be looking for a Gillette British Flare Tip SS. Thank you.

One of the best things about this channel: taking on assumptions and testing them. Pre-shave oil is a great example. I also found that oil increases friction. It's not about increasing slickness, it's about hydrating the skin and hair before the shave.

The Gillette Super Speed (C1 Date Code) is My Favorite Razor at the moment. I tried a Shark Blade last month for the 1st time and, while it shaves just fine, I found that the end tabs on the blade were very sharp, even to the point of looking almost jagged. I ended up filing down the corners of the end tabs on the bottom of a ceramic coffee cup and still didn't feel comfortable with this blade. I traded it out for an Astra Superior Platinum after 1 shave. Great Video and Shave On My Brother!!!

Michael, I like that your SS is your favourite razor, at the moment 😃 I know how that feels. I had some razor blades with jagged ends like that, the name escapes me for the moment, but it caught my ear and nose. I never would have thought of using a coffee cup base. That's neat. Enjoy your week my friend. All the best.

Thank you very much. It always makes me smile when fellows talk about using Gillette Permanent Sharp for four or five shaves; you'd think with the name they would last much longer. There was a razor blade, it may have been a vintage Personna, that was made with tungsten and lasted forever. I believe Personna had to stop making them as they were not good for profitability. I tried this blade in my King C Gillette and i had 5 good shaves out of it. The Shark Chrome version only gave me 3 good shaves. Its so weird that people have such different results with blades. I wonder if the differences in production batches are maybe the reason for these different experiences.

Hello Mark. A really good shave video and you really got me thinking about a few things. I am not sure about the benefits of a cold water shave. My instinct tells me warm water should relax the skin more and soften the facial hair. Of course I have no scientific evidence to back this up. You talked of your unfortunate experience with the Leaf razor and how you developed a mild skin infection. It made me think of my shaving routine and lack of surgical cleanliness. Can you remember a TV programme called "How clean is your house?" In the show they used to take swab samples from various parts of the house for analysis. So, I was running through all the various shaving products in my mind, thinking how much bacteria could be living in there. For example, blades after several uses, a damp shaving brush, my alum block, the surface of a tub of soap and a damp flannel cloth. None of us will keep our shaving dens 'operating theatre' clean yet we will often self-inflict some shaving cuts. Difficult to know how far to take this without developing a bad case of OCD. Finally, don't think you got away with sticking your tongue out in the very last second of the video! We all saw it! Have a great weekend, Mark.
@FriendshipShaving
@FriendshipShaving 4 жыл бұрын
Hi David. I wondered if anyone would notice that I stuck my tongue out 😃 I think cold water dampens the hair just same as hot water - if you have a cold shower, you still end up with wet hair 😉 but I think whereas warm water encourages blood flow and relaxes the skin, cold water tightens the skin, making the hair stand up a little more, ready to be cut. Of course they'll be less blood flow to the skin and maybe that's good too. The show you mentioned, preyed on our fear of germs. I watched once, when the woman went to quite extraordinary lengths to clean the toilet and announced, after a swab test, it was to food preparation standards! I don't eat from the loo 😅 I take your point though. It's usually only when I cut the follicle too close that I have any issues. Cleanliness is next to godliness, as the old saying goes. Without going overboard, my den is very clean and the tube of antiseptic cream never far away 👍

I get terrible razor bumps and rash from a Feather blade, but I also get the same from a Derby Extra. I am a huge fan of refined shave. It is my go to when considering a new blade. As for water, I get best results with cool water and shaving BEFORE I shower, instead of after.

I made the mistake of ordering a box of 100 of these as they were so cheap. I've only got a few left now as I just used them for one or two shaves each. Definitely found if I tried to push them for a few shaves that I would end up with cuts. It didn't feel like the blade was tugging or getting super dull but it would result in one or two weepers after about 3 shaves fairly consistently.

Got the leaf razor a few months back, have been using it regularly since then for face and head shaves, comparing it to most cartridge razors on the market, cartridge razors usually have a lubrication strip to help the razor glide on your skin and prevent irritation, whereas the leaf doesn’t have that, your essentially dragging sharp steel across your face which makes razor burn/irritation very easy to happen, especially with a sharp blade like a feather, the key to the leaf razor for me is you really need a dense and slick lather, Mitchell’s woolfat soap works excellently for me with the leaf razor even with 3 feather blades loaded into it and I can do a 3 pass shave no problem, and I have very sensitive skin so shaving has always been a problem area for me regarding irritation but Mitchell’s woolfat has solved most of that issue, preshave between passes also helps with the leaf razor, and I know I’m late commenting on this video 😂 I came across the video as I’ve just got a pack of 100 shark blades so wanted to see what there like 😊 hope this helps 👌😊

@FriendshipShaving 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Rob. Thanks for commenting, I appreciate it. I like reading the comments and always find them interesting. I'm a little surprised that a thick lather works well but obviously there is enough water in the lather to create slip. I washed my hands today and with a little soap and a lot of water had the slickest lather ever. I wish shaving was so easy 😃 All the best. Cheers.
@robwalsh1322
@robwalsh1322 3 жыл бұрын
Friendship Shaving yes with Mitchell’s woolfat it works, probably something to do with the ingredients, I find some other soaps especially Taylor of old Bond Street to be not great at protection but extremely slick, it’s all about finding the right balance, trial and error also, Pre shave in between passes also helps👍👍

Hi Mark, I like the presentation of the Shark blades on how they are packaged. I bought a 100 pack of the new Shark blades (Platinum) and are very smooth, but I realized after my first shave they started to rust a bit, so I’m kind bummed about it. Have you had any problem with the Shark blades? Proraso White is my favorite. When you reviewed that leaf razor i thought it might be a problem. Also I tried these sharks and didn’t like them, I felt they were not sharp and not smooth. My go to Blades, Gillette Platinum and Astra green.
@FriendshipShaving
@FriendshipShaving 4 жыл бұрын
I have yet to try the Shark Platinum blades, although it's disappointing to read that yours started to rust so easily; the smoothness is very appealing but it seems, from your description, they are a one shave blade. You were right about the Leaf being problematic- I never imagined it would give me so many bumps and blemishes; I don't remember this being an issue for me when I was using cartridge razors.
@Shaverboy516

I have been using the Sharks SS for a bit, they gained a bad rep from their early batches I think, but its been awhile since and the recent ones that I have purchased actually performed far better than I expected for their price point (US$6 for 100). I find them to be "good enough" meaning sharp enough and smooth enough for 2 shaves (morning and evening). And at $0.06 per blade, I am not going to care to push for longevity. Fresh blade for the morning, 2nd use for the afternoon / evening clean up shave and then recycle. Even if I were to use them as a "One Shave" Blade, a box of 100s is going to last me 50 days at $6 expense for essentially a consistent shave every time since it is with a new blade for each shave. When you look at it that way, not much to quibble about.
@FriendshipShaving
@FriendshipShaving 4 жыл бұрын
That's very true, Steven - the price point is excellent. I can't quibble about that and, as you wrote, even used just once it's good value. It certainly wasn't a bad blade and I did get a very nice shave. Maja wrote that the Shark Platinum blades are very good. I'm sure they'll be a little more expensive though. All the best.
@ArchonSG1
@ArchonSG1 4 жыл бұрын
@@FriendshipShaving Its not by much but price varies from vendor to vendor. Shark Platinums go for about US$10.00 for a pack of 100s. I think that the one thing we tend to mistakenly bring over from Cartridge razor use is the need to find longevity from our DE blades. This I think, is a mistake. Think about it. I get about 3-6 shaves (3 passes + clean up) from the Shark Platinums (about the same for Feathers / Bic / Gillette Nacet) and if I use them as a 4 shave blade (2 days, with a morning and evening shave) a 100 blade box is essentially a $10 for 200 days. And again, if I were to just use them as a one day blade, 2 shaves, morning and evening, I still get 100 days of consistent shaves worth for US$10.00 That is a far cry from cartridges. There is no need to look for longevity at all if you want consistent performing shaves. We are talking cost of literally pennies.

Hi Mark, hope you don't mind me asking a question. What antibiotic cream do you use to clear up breakouts? My face is in a right state at the moment.
@FriendshipShaving
@FriendshipShaving 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Gareth. There is a 5 in 1, face-wash that is excellent for breakouts. I can't use it because it has the same active ingredient as aspirin (I think). I seem to remember it's called salicylic acid, but it is very good as a face-wash. I was only able to use it once, but there was a big difference, just in one day. I use a Lloyds antiseptic (and antibacterial) cream. I like a tea tree antiseptic but this is good and it says on the box, it's for shaving rashes. Other than that, I really recommend a tea tree and lavender face soap and if you get one with neem (it's an Indian plant) in it, that's really good for infections. 😃👍

As appentice in 1965 we calculated GBP to Deutschmark at 12x, now the sterling is 1,19 only. Heard yr comments abt irritations. To make it simple, overshaving, either with dull or sharp blade is the main reason. So, 3 passes + pickups shud be it. Yr remarks the sharpness of coatings r correct, its a coat, not metal, it wears off immediately. Imo, its a waste of money, if y use blades 3-5x as example. Cheers, Achim+

I think I know EXACT reason why you received the razor bumps, ingrown hairs and irritation with the Leaf Razor. You hit on part of the answer and that was the 3 blades used simultaneously. It really would not matter what brand or if they were exceptionally sharp. Equally, pressing too hard was not the culprit. The biggest reason curly haired/black and other ethnic groups with non typically straight hair get ingrown hairs with a cartridge razor is due to the fact that 3 blades cut the hair shaft shorter than skin level. When the hair starts to grow back it does so starting beneath the epidermis. Even straight hair will "bump" against the dermis, bend and become ingrown. A DE/SE blade cuts the hair even with the skin although it is possible to cut lower than the surface by pulling the skin too taunt and then the same ingrown hair/razor bump issue would occur. The reason a Black person might have a worse reaction is that the hair is already prone to growing in a downward pointing curve and it is exacerbated by being trapped. A cartridge razor with 3 or more blades is known to cause this situation. It is also a true that a dull blade can cause these same factors as well as irritation due to overuse and it possible that you had a combination of a dull blade, multiple blades and a general greater sensitivity in your skin. I suggest you keep a bottle of Bump Patrol in your shave den first aid kit along side the styptic, alum and cotton balls/pads.
@FriendshipShaving

Thanks for that information Keith. I didn't know that ingrown hairs, due to shaving, were a particular problem with some ethnic groups. These are the worst bumps I have had and it's definitely a multiple blade issue. I do tend to get odd bumps, as I mentioned, when I use a very sharp blade in an aggressive razor. What didn't occur to me, was that bumps can be caused by over stretching the skin. Of course, now that I've read it, it makes sense. I assume a dull blade can cause bumps because it pulls the hair as it cuts it. Thanks for your thoughts, mate. It's been an interesting read.

Ps. In regards to your unfortunate razor burn/irritation, I believe that you did overdo it. Nacet makes really sharp blades, and so, considering that it uses a three blade cartridge, a thorough one pass shave (with touch up), would be more agreeable for you and your skin.

Gee, Darren. I just watched the trailer and that looks a good film. Based on true facts! It's a bit like Erin Brochovich. Du Pont are still trading! Shocking.

Hi Sheema. There was a sound issue on some of the earlier videos which meant they were very quiet. I think you'll find that on all of the reasons entry videos, for at least the last year, that the sound is good.
