The sun is shining as we join the last trip of the day at Pant station and travel along the Brecon mountain Railway behind a 1930's Baldwin tender engine

What's kind of neat is in the classic 1958 book "The Maine Two Footers" there is a photo essay at the end called "Two Footers from other Parts of the World". There is a builder's photo of a Baldwin two foot gauge Pacific that was exported to a cement company in South Africa. She looks a lot more Americanized today, and is probably multiple boilers down the road, but Brecon Mountain #2 is the same locomotive!

They are actually building two replicas of some Sandy River locos. a 2-6-2 tender engine and a 0-4-4 Forney! You can see them on their website as well as some progress on their construction.

Will they be shipped to the Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum? Also, correction, there rebuilding SR&RL #10, which was a 2-4-4t forney..

Nice sequence, good definition too. The way all the moving parts are glistening, you can tell that they look after that loco!

This is beautiful! I've always loved how American narrow gauge locomotives looked. And the scenery is pretty nice too. If I ever visit the UK I might stop by there as well.

The Brecon Beacons in Wales are beautiful, as is Snowdonia...and Pembrokeshire with its coastline...and the beaches of Gower..and the meadows of Monmouthshire, and, well, most of Wales is lovely

Thanks for sharing this great video of a 2-foot gauge 4-6-2-pacific-tender-type Baldwin built steam locomotive. I just wish that the people who started to save Sandy River & Rangeley Lakes #24,would not have gotten cold-feet after 2-years and let it be scrapped. From a distance,these two Steamers looked alike above the running gear. Sandy River & Rangeley Lakes Railroad #24 had 33-inch drivers,was a 2-6-2-prairie tender-type Steam Engine. The engine weight was 54,000 LBS. and the tender weight was 37,000 LBS. Total weight-engine and tender was 45 and 1/2-tons. All of these 2-foot gauge steam engines had outside-frames,with drivers inside the frames,and the counter-weights on the end of the axles outside the frames,instead of being a part the driving wheels themselves. I have been a fan of the American-Maine-Two-Footers for almost 50-years. Thanks again for sharing.

That's because baldwin built both, although this former 2 footer (in SA it ran on 2ft gauge track) gets its outside frames from Baldwin's larger 3 foot gauge locos built for the Denver's and Rio grand and the white pass rr in the yukon.

Actually all of the Prairie engines and the larger and more modern Forneys on the Maine Two-Foot lines all had outside frames. On such narrow track, outside frames were essential for stability. SR&RL #9 and #8 were basically the same engine except #8 had inside frames. #8 was much less stable and I believe actually killed her engineer in a tip-over. This engine is basically an expansion of SR&RL #23, the biggest of them. Maybe if the SR&RL had continued to grow in hauled tonnage, this would have been the next step. What's great is if you get an original edition of Linwood Moody's "Maine Two Footers", there is a photo gallery at the end of the book titled "Two Footers from Around the World", and the Baldwin builders photo of this very engine is in there.

No.2 was built by Baldwin of Philadelphia, USA in 1930, (No. 61269) for the Eastern Province Cement Co. Port Elizabeth, South Africa where it spent all its working life hauling limestone. In 1973 it ran away driverless de-railed and was wrecked. It was treated as an accident write-off by the South African insurers and was purchased by the BMR as salvage. Shipped back to the UK as deck cargo to Liverpool, rebuilt between 1993 and 1997. This 4-6-2 tender locomotive weighs 47 tons and is capable of hauling the heaviest trains to Torpantau, the latest extension to the line. Thanks for the info. I thought it was Baldwin built,but wasn't totally sure! She certainly has a bark of an exhaust & obviously plenty of power!

The South African Railways themselves had 6 nearly identical locomotives from The Baldwin Works, they were classed NG10 and did run untill replaced by the even more powerfull NG15 "Kalahari's" when these were moved from SWA were the track there had been regauged from 2' to 3'6"in the early 60's. Do you know if there was any alteration done for the move from 2' to 1'11.75" track, in the form of tyre turning or even moving the tyres a bit inwards? or could the locomotive cope straight away with the minute difference of a quarter of an inch? I can imagine the tolerance for the track gauge in itself covers the difference. I'm volunteer locomotive fitter, but not a specialist in trackwork. Like your video and I love the sharp bark from that Baldwin, there are some Baldwin locomotives on other narrow gauge railways in the UK I think, I know about the new build of "Lyn" from the Lynton & Barnstaple, a Baldwin 2-4-2 Tank (not yet finished) and the existance of a couple of War Department 4-6-0 Tank engines. But No.2 is the largest of them, and apart from the NGG16 Garrats and the yet to restore NG15 on the WHR the largest loco on the narrow gauge in the UK.

No the BBR has always been like the Bure Valley and Kirklees lines two foot gauge running on former standard gauge trackbed with scaled down locos. An interesting line though with some great views.

This loco isnt scaled down, most narrow gauge loco s are full sized for their gauge.

Hi Tac, glad you liked the video, you don't do too bad with yours either!. I guess I was lucky with this particular one, the previous day was very poor weather, but on my way back through Brecon on this day the sun came out and the air was clear! Mind you I've found the Canon Legria HFM 406 to be a neat and powerful little HD camcorder, especially with a wideangle lens and external shotgun mic

this is fantastic and i didn't know existed we are planning to go next summer i am in the process of planning a G scale garden railway my biggest train is an American 4-6-2 Pacific Atlantic steam locomotive but you cant beat the real thing and cant wait to see this beautiful train .

There where lots of american built locos, both modern ( GM diesels) and historical, standard gauge and narrow, working in great britian, just google it.

I like this video. The explanations in text are timely. I had wondered about the arrangement for connecting cars and so the look down view settled that for me...I have ridden on a few railways of this type but the one that is most memorable is the one in Colorado which has a nice bridge and I believe it must curve back upon itself to make its way forward...I believe it may be seen at Georgetown...

Thanks for your comments, glad you liked it. One of these days I might get over to the States and get to ride some of the preserved railways - I visited Arizona several times in the 1990's, but the Grand Canyon Railway was always non operational when I was there!

granskare That is correct, to keep the grade down to a reasonable percent the track goes up the canyon, turns back and crosses over itself on a tall, curved viaduct before paralleling itself only at a higher elevation. There is a 2 foot gauge railroad built on an old standard gauge line at Cripple Creek, CO called CRIPPLE CREEK & VICTOR. It is on the old Midland Terminal right of way. The locomotives are from Europe but are very nice.

The wheels on the front pony truck of this loco are deceptively large and people can be deceived into thinking that it is a 2-8-2, but if you go to the railway's website and look at the full details of No.2 you will see that it is a 4-6-2 - www.breconmountainrailway.co.uk/no-2-locomotive even if you do have to look at their photo very closely!

Plenty of vids about the original Brecon- Merthyr line. It traverses the limestone country north of the coal field, then heads towards the Brecon beacons. it passes scenic reservoirs and hill country

Hi Thomas, glad you liked it, I believe that they have actually extended the line since this video. The coaches have balconies on each end so the shot you mention was taken by leaning out from the one just behind the engine.

[WUT] RKProRacer it looks like a chopper but with a fully removable drawbar rather than an attached hook, a reasonably common narrow gauge railway approach, continuous braking is provided by air.
