The X's are a genius way to represent things like anxiety and depression. Your mind is so busy making up all kinds of scenarios of people looking at you a certain way and talking about you a certain way that you close yourself off completely. The X dropping from some people's faces is to show Ishida opening up, he's dropping his guard as it were, letting them in.

I very much agree! In media, we always need a big reason for things. One tragic event or one awful person is the sole reason characters are mean most of the time, and that does make a more satisfying narrative. It gives an easy answer to "why are they like this?" When people are so much more complicated then that. So I agree, this movie is wonderful at showing that sometimes, there's isn't a particular reasons people act the way they do, sometimes it's a combination of too many things to ever try and keep track of

As someone who has struggled with anxiety for a relatively large portion of my life this movie holds a special place in my heart. It comes the closest to portraying that emotion that I've seen within entertainment - and the story is just beautifully done. It just feels so real. So many great messages and a movie that you can never re-watch too many times. Thanks for the reaction.

@Suiadan
@Suiadan 2 жыл бұрын
@@rukk444 I wish I could provide a satisfactory answer but I can only give you my experience: the truth is that I still struggle with anxiety. However its currently not daily and it is rarer for it to bubble up to the point of a panic attack. This has been positive - but I've largely achieved it through poor methods. I've always refused to go onto medication as I take a lot for a chronic condition (Ulcerative Colitis) which resulted in being offered CBT (Cognative Behaviour Therapy). I would recommend this if you haven't tried it - but I suspect that is unlikely. Even if that is only through reading if you can't afford it (I was lucky to get it through the NHS). It helped me in short term bouts but wasn't a personal cure - but that was due to factors that don't relate to most people (largely linked to mind frame/ chronic condition limiting the ability to 'push into anxiety' without negative consequences). My slight 'success' has been largely linked to being serious about my own capabilities and what I can/ can't achieve currently. Again - this is probably a poor method - as its largely playing into the anxiety and letting it define my social/ life choices. At some point I intend to try and break out of that - but only once I feel I've gained some level of control of my life. I will say that you are going through the period of life where I found it toughest. You are still young (although I know its infuriating to read/ hear people saying that so I apologise for doing so). I'm currently 26 and hate when people say I'm still young! I'm sorry as I feel like this reply isn't very useful - but wanted to give my honest experience. I really wish you the best in tackling your anxiety - just take it one small step at a time and try to remember we are our own worst critics.

"I want you to help me live." Much more powerful than I love you in this situation i think. I enjoyed this a lot more than "Your Name." I have anxiety issues, have thought about and struggled with certain thoughts...so this movie just really grabbed me and held me. That line still resonates with me, "I want you to help me live." I listen to a song called Hated by Life Itself covered by Raon Lee and it helps me too. The lyrics... I recommend it to anyone having similar thoughts. ❤ this film.

@Sawm tluanga i think about it like this, "I love you" is how you feel for them. It's about you and your feelings. "I want you to help me live," is about them. You want to help them through life. It's about their feelings. That to me is love. ❤ When you put their feelings first, before your own. It's not bad at all. Everyone has their own feelings. I think "Your Name" is liked more by those who love romance and are romantic at heart. "A Silent Voice," i think is liked more by those who have been bullied, or were bullies, and the self hate, anxiety, depression, and all of those emotions and feelings. I am a hopeless romantic at heart, but I empathize, have been bullied, depressed, dealt with anxiety, and thoughts of taking my life. I think I find it hard to put effort into a romantic relationship when i have all these things built up inside of me. Like i don't deserve it. Don't deserve love. Don't want to make others listen to my problems. 😔

A couple of months late, but this, probably the pivotal line in the movie, in this sub is mistranslated. It should be "I want *you* to help *me* live". Which transforms the sentiment completely from something that could be read as pity to something a lot more mutual and co-operative.

Honestly I think the best thing about the movie is that it tries really hard not to have the generic good character/ bad character thing…even down to Shoya’s old friends pulling him out of the water after he fell in… the director once said that she didn’t wanna play God because it wasn’t her place…. She just presented you with the characters with as much nuance as she was could …yes this particular movie is about Shoya and his “redemption” ( more like his journey to learning how to love himself and also learning how to forge emotional connections in a healthy way) but it could have just as easily been about Ueno you know…we could just as easily be watching her redemption, it’s just not her story. The movie goes out of its way to show us that no one is completely bad but also no one is completely good( even Shoko, who is the most innocent beautiful character has a hard time seeing outside of herself to know how her actions affect those who love her)… everyone has flaws but your flaws don’t make you less human or less worthy of love… the goal is just to let yourself be loved and be the best version of you that you can be As a result I don’t really hate anyone in this movie…except Miki(?) [the blonde] she’s the fuckin worst for me because she’s the most dishonest
@vrooomba69
@vrooomba69 2 жыл бұрын
Funny enough about Miki is that out of everyone, she recognizes that "flaws don’t make you less human or less worthy of love". Most specifically when she makes a loud fuss to Nishimiya after the attempt to garner goodie points but ends by saying "You have to love your faults as well and move forward" (translations vary via source) both to Nishimiya and herself. I hate Miki for the same reasons as you but that one line is what makes her not total trash, even if her original intent comforts Nishimiya was in order to look better and whatnot. In my eyes, she is still better than the ahole of a teacher.

@@simphiwinkosindaba1036 yeah, the movie is very lenient on showcasing Miki and the homeroom teacher's involvement with Nishimiya's bullying (I can see why, limited time) but the teacher is basically Miki (laughs along and badmouths/complains about Nishimiya) but a little more blunt and pushes his problems or obstacles onto other people, for example pushing Nishimiya's communication and classwork to Ueno (which burdens her) and scapegoats Ishida. In addition, he is shown much worse after Ishida grows up but that's a scene I won't spoil.

I got the manga - so I did not figure this out until a lot later - but (the "two shows" Sho-ko Sho-yah) he liked her right off, the girl who sat beside him knew it right away - but he just communicated through rough housing and mocking like he did with his friends. He wanted to learn signing in the class (he was looking at his hands imagining using them), but "the group" tossed that aside and he was trying to learn by watching others - who all seemed to be getting annoyed. He kept being drawn to her because he wanted to understand her; but ended up frustrated and wanting her to solve the communication problem as it was the center of him understanding or relating to the world (growing up). The end in the book is her realizing he had sought her out because he was planning to do exactly what she did and she dreams of HIS desk being empty. Oh - his suicide plan got cancelled when he accidentally asked to be her friend - he did not expect that or know why; his original plan was to just apologize and convince himself she was "just fine". All the character are personality types (arguably); lastly it hit on how "we all" have been like those kids and maybe just got lucky at not being called out; and likewise have been bullied.

3:14 if u look closely here, it seems like Kawai pretends to sing to fool Nishimiya into singing early. It’s kinda left ambiguous, but to me I think it’s one of the little things that show Kawai being more involved in the bullying than she would like to admit, or that she genuinely believes she hasn’t, because she has convinced herself into thinking she never did and that she’s a great person.

34:15 When things start going off in the classroom and Kawai (blond hair girl) starts telling about what Ishida did in Elementary School, it’s because of the conversation he just had with Mashiba (orange hair guy). He was just talking to Ishida saying “I realize Shoko’s hearing is really bad, wonder if that’s why she was picked on when she was younger. Who would even do that to a deaf girl?” Ishida got nervous hearing him talk about it and assumed he already heard the story from someone who went to his old school, so he went to talk to Kawai and asked if she was spreading the story around. She hadn’t been and she overreacts assuming Ishida is there to bully her to keep her quiet. She says he never changes and lets everyone else know the story.

About the moon/confession thing In Japanese, the words for "I like you" and "moon" are very similar. I like you being "Suki" and moon being "Tsuki" Because Shoko is deaf, she can sometimes slightly mispronounce words, so she ended up saying "moon," confusing Shoya However, there's yet another layer to this that's actually really cool. I believe the saying "the moon is beautiful tonight" is associated with girls confessing. Like, girls say that as a way to confess? So even if Shoko said it wrong and he misunderstood, the confession technically still stood (especially with him responding "Yeah, I guess the moon does look beautiful")
@kennynguyen2970

Honestly suki and tsuki sound identical and people only can differentiate from the context like the rest of the sentence or situation. In this context, it should be more “I like you” but since Shona cannot connect to other people and especially feels guilty towards Shoko, it was unthinkable for him to interpret it that way.

The one thing I absolutely loved about this movie was the way it handled forgiveness. By the end, you truly feel as though Ishida has done all he can to make up for his past, and is learning how to be forgiven and forgive himself too. I love how even though Shouka was so quick to forgive, that the atonement didn’t end there. Also, it so accurately portrayed this deep rooted social anxiety that Ishida has. He’s so scared that every single person is judging him and knows what he did, and he feels like he doesn’t deserve to look them in the face. By the end, he realized as he has been forgiven, he began to be able to forgive himself, and the guilt-ridden social anxiety began to lessen a bit. I thought the messages in this movie were by FAR the most potent ones out of any anime movie I’ve seen.

this is one of my favourite animated movies next to Wolf Children, which I really hope you react to. its a romance as well, but also about family and tough themes as well as another theme (but I don't want to spoil the movie as it plays a huge role in the movie). i cried while watching this movie, laughed and just fuzzy. it really is a must see.

1:00:30 When Nishimiya and Ishida were on the bridge after he woke up from his coma, and he was apologizing to her, he explained that the reason he bullied her back then was because he wanted to talk to her (probably liked her) but he didnt know how to and ended up hurting her instead.

I'm still watching so Idk if you guys figure it out before the end, but in regards to the "I like you" - "the moon?" moment at 27:52 She said "suki" which means "to like," or "I like (you)." Because she's deaf, though, her pronunciation is a bit off and he hears "tsuki," which is pronounced very similarly, and means "the moon."

This movie is amazing. I always enjoy seeing everyone switch their opinions on Ishida so quickly lol At first it’s, “F this kid. He deserves it!” And then 20 minutes or so later it’s, “aww it’s not your fault. This shouldn’t be happening to you.” The rollercoaster of emotions people go through when I watch reactions of this movie is always so entertaining 😭

The teacher, in my opinion, was actually the one at fault here in this movie for he didn't do what should be done when he knows that there is something going on between the students which is bullying. He didn't do enough actions that can change the behavior and can discipline the students. Anyway, great reactions from you guys! This was one of the greatest anime movies of all time for it became an eye-opener to the audience especially when it comes to common issues like bullying.

Never disappointed with your reactions. Always feeling everything together with characters. Love when someone watches something genuinely and is so into it. You need to check out “Weathering With You” next for sure. It’s one of the most beautiful anime movies out there. Plus it has the same creator as “your name”. I’m pretty sure you’re gonna enjoy it a lot. It’s really good, I totally recommend!❤️

I love you guys, you get so involved in the story. And I already knew this from other stuff you've watched, but for me it's even more impactful with this movie. I saw this in the cinema some time after it came out, and boy did I have a hard time keeping the waterworks in check. I think I said this on the 'Your name' video, but you should also watch 'Garden of words' from the same director. It's pretty short, but the animation is stunning and I love the way the story is handled.

Honestly I think it can be kind of hard to, ironically, be empathetic with mindset of a childish, bully. Kids have underdeveloped senses of empathy, this creates a lack of understanding which can breed that kind of hostility. The kids bullied shoko because they simply saw her as someone to be othered and hopefully, left behind. Of course this is cruel, but they don't really understand that because kids are pretty egocentric. It's pretty easy as an adult to look at young Shouya's actions and judge him for it, but can you honestly say you would have definitely done the right thing when you were young?

they gave more depth to each character in manga by adding a film concert where this friends group make a short film together and see more relation between each other but they couldn't complete it becoz of the bridge incident they all went their separate ways. Later when ishida was admitted to hospital Nagatsuka(director) wanted to cmplte the film and and they used the 'nishimya going to each friends to ask forgiveness' scene for asking to act in the film(+when she was reaching out for ueno there will be a scene where ueno accepts her indirectly adding a little redemption). the friend grp came together and resumed making the film for ishida and played it when he got to school all recovered(yea the film was good)...and they also show the nishimiya's family issue ...anyways i did wished they added it here now whenever i watch this i feel like there coulda been more to it

i love this movie and your reaction. The first time I watched the movie the subtitles I watched had the mispronounced word spelled wrong and jumbled so I was able to understand the "I like you" vs "I like the moon" right off the back unlike you're which had them spelled clearly. Even the English dub is a beautiful version to watch and listen to.

My first time watching this movie, I legitimately had to pause it multiple times as some of the themes were hitting me HARD. When I realized he was isolating himself and pushing others away, putting words in other people's mouths from the strong anxiety he felt... This movie was done so well, I think I can count at least six times I cried. Maybe more.

Silence plays a bigger part in cinematography actually, not just in anime. Silence acts as a transition to the next scene but it also acts as a time to self reflect and absorb information or scenes from before; being shown a black screen with silence also has the same effect but pushes you to look at yourself and be left with your own thoughts alone. It's also more realistic and gives off a more awkward feeling because unlike in anime, movies, or tv shows there's hardly any cheery, feel-good music going on in the background. So overall it's interesting that you guys interpret the silent scenes in a negative way or as a warning to something bad going to happen. When you're alone everything seems more quiet and isolating so I can see how people can find that uncomfortable, but silence can also be comforting in a different context.

I'm a year late but here's my answer to 28:13. In short, yes, we got the good translation, but for Ishida he didn't understand what she said. In Japanese the word for like is very similar to the word for the moon, "suki" compared to "tsuki," they are pronounced very similarly (suki is pronounced very similarly to the name 'Sue' and the word 'key,' while tsuki throws a 't' sound before everything) and because Shoko has difficulty enunciating since she is deaf he thought that she had said something about the moon rather than liking him. Just thought I should say something no matter how late for those who come later that don't know Japanese.

If you want a great movie to watch I would recommend my favorite "wolf children" and honestly it would make a great reaction but if y'all don't have the time its still worth a watch on a personal level. My family isn't a big movie watching people and definitely not an anime movie, and its not a super common one so I also would love to see the movie get the love I think it deserves! Also if you watch it bring tissues

35:30 actually Mashiba punches Ishida in the face....i know it sounds weird but in manga there's more to this story and there they portray more of mashiba's character as well as the old school class teacher and what he did wrong...and more of every other characters too like Ueno's too u would understand why she's doing the thing she does...its becoz she loved ishida and she gets jealous when she sees ishida giving more attention to nishimiya

BTW we have cat cafes! Inspired from Japanese ones. A family friend has a flower shop where she has adoptable cats lounging around all day, too. They're hard to find, as not every place has them in the US and other places, but they do exist! Also, I'm with you, I was sobbing all over as someone who was horrifically bullied. I always hoped those idiots found themselves and became good people tbh. Also also, watch Cinema Therapy's video on this to learn what he's experiencing with the Xs and depression.

Most overlook that Kawai was purposely moving her lips before they start singing as to get Shoko to start singing ahead. Rewatch the scene and you'll see Kawai moving about, Shoko sees that and then begins to sing. Kawai much like the others also made fun of Shoko, she did it in more subtle ways. And much like Ueno said, she laughed along with the rest.
