I built a simple chicken coop on our off grid homestead with basic tools for around $1,000. We upgraded to 24 laying hens this year so it was time for an upgrade. #diy #outdoors #homestead

Two major additions to the property. A great woodshed and big chicken coop. Very basic building methods, but I still learn a thing or two watching you put them up. You don't waste a nail, a screw or a scrap of lumber, and no expensive equipment. This is what it's all about.

A weasel can get under your roof soffets...use 1/4 steel mesh all around....double up your chicken wire so rats cant enter too...

Put a pile of gravel for them to eat. They need that becauce the swallow small stones to help digest food in the croup: A crop (sometimes also called a croup or a craw, ingluvies, or sublingual pouch) is a thin-walled expanded portion of the alimentary tract used for the storage of food prior to digestion. Wow, it’s a lot more spacious inside than I thought. Hypothetically, If you were going to build a little guest house, do you think you could build it the same way? I can picture a bed at the back, a little stove, a counter against one of the eave walls with a sink, and especially when you put up the entry room, maybe even a shower. With the spacing between the eaves, I bet you could even stick a little dormer over where a sink might go, just for a little more headroom and lighting, since it probably wouldn’t have a clear roof.

Love your informative videos of how you live your lifestyle. You keep inching me forward to a life of less reliance of people. As a former tradesmen, please get a stileto hammer since you hand bang a lot of your framing work. It may be 5X the money but it is well worth it. Your body will thank you.

The new chicken coup is awesome. Please show it when the inside additions are added. I hope this one is more critter proof. I was bummed when you lost your chickens before. I admire how you recycle your wood, etc. I am always amazed how you rarely miss when using the hammer. I really respect and admire your work ethic. I wish I could live as you do.

You are the best hammerer I know! You never miss a nail head! I watched your home build and was amazed that you didn't miss a nail; not even one stroke! One recommendation - I always make the walls one to two inches shorter so I can overlap the sheathing onto the rim joist. Mostly for air infiltration ( you never know what the coupe might become on the future) and ply is much more forgiving if water makes contact then the OSB board. It will keep the water from seeping in during a hard rain. I know, I know the siding should do this... It was my 2Cents!

If you would line the bottom of the rafters with painted black metal where you wanted a dark area for the chickens you could capture solar gain in colder weather. Similar to a lumber kiln.

Great job on the coop. I will suggest running a 2x4 from one side to the other on each rafter. Strength is in triangles and it will give a lot more strength for anything that might happen, limbs, trees falling or even wind. Might also want to use some straps for where the rafter connect to the stem walls. Even if you just use a 2X4, it will help with snow load. That's one of the nicest coops I have seen. The entry way is great, room for anything chicken related!

Absolutely! Good building practice is to tie the rafters together to prevent snow load from pushing down on the peak, splaying the walls. Ideal would be a 2x4 (or rough cut equivalent) just above head height & firmly attached to the rafters. If you have scrap plywood, triangular gussets - as large as practical - glued & screwed onto the rafters at the peak would help add stability. I'd also add some raised nest boxes, the hens love them & it makes gathering the eggs easier. Love the separate entrance idea!

Great build for the chickens! I noticed some other channels that build coops used a sheet of linoleum on the floor to make cleaning easier. Seems like an inexpensive and practical solution.
