Simple Living in Summer. I wanted to share a little bit while reorganizing my bookshelves and talking about my love of books and art, and while I find it to be a very therapeutic pastime. I felt a need to pick myself up this week after a lightening storm started a lot of fires, so it felt right to indulge myself in some of my favorite pastimes and share some of what I love with you ✨

I just finished Anne of Green Gables and I'm currently reading The Secret Garden. Yes, they are children's books, but I didn't read them as a child and I'm glad I didn't let that stop me from reading them now. I absolutely adore the stories and I shall read them over and over and over again for the remaining years I have left in life.

You remind me of my grandma. She’s almost 82, and had never had internet, doesn’t have a TV, and has a flip phone she barely uses. Because of no internet, she has amassed thousands of books to learn from. Cookbooks, garden books, history, children’s books. All different kinds. Her small farm and little brick house are magical. She has book shelves on just about every wall. I was reading chapter books in kindergarten and no doubt got good at reading from the many hours spent at her house reading or being read to. It’s like my second home there. I am so busy these days with many projects, but I try to read a little when I’ve got some extra time, which is usually in the winter.

“Come On Seabiscuit”. It’s a story about a race horse who as a young horse faced many obstacles because of his looks, was laughed and was unwanted by everyone until a kind soul saw into his heart and with love between the two of them, Seabiscuit became a champion. Sometimes I will be quietly watching an episode, and a little tear trickles down my cheeks so unexpectedly. Paola, you are inspiring growth, thoughtful reflection, and healing here in this community you've convened. Your love of "Finding Neverland" prompted me to respond; it's one of my cherished 'faves', also. There is 'Kindred' all round us, we just have to know how to feel it. I read the other's comments and see so many moved to share because your activities drew something out of our heart. Your willingness to share yourself and your honest, appealing interactions on the simplicities of life beckon to us from your bookshelves and brook sides, alike. I am a social worker--on hiatus--living through my early 50s now, and I'm taking the time {I always should have} to reflect on my place in the world, the past, present and future of how I impact others and how this impacts me. I'm discovering that what I have really needed all along is to simplify. Mostly, I have learned that so much of me now requires what I've always given away to others so freely. It is wonderful to watch as you celebrate living through your early 20s by cultivating a peaceful life, focusing on what really matter to you in a way that soulfully instructs and inspires us all. Thank you so much.

I hope that the fires die down soon and everyone is safe. We don’t usually tend to have as much heat here but there is a old Scottish Gaelic proverb that is we use: Chan eil tuil air nach tig traoghadh which is pronounced: Ha neel tool air nah teeg troo-ah-gug This translates to: There isn't a flood which will not subside. Best wishes and lots of love

@@withlovekylie Ohhh I didn't know Norton Juster had died. Sorry to hear! I meant to add The Phantom Tollbooth to my recommendations but felt I was already going on too long, LOL. It is really representative of its era in some ways--like the TV show "The Prisoner", for example. It's a brilliant book, full of quirky humor and cerebral, imaginative ideas. I particularly remember--I found him genuinely frightening--the faceless gentleman monster known as the Terrible Trivium. Everybody should read Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory books, but Dahl's adult short stories are next level.

I didn't know about the ending of the Peter Pan story. Just a small disagreement with the author: I believe the moment one doubts if he can fly, he still can. The ones who can't are the ones who don't even wonder. What's helped me not to keep book copies forever is that I've realized once they have become part of me, keeping the physical copy is not longer required. You do have some nice antique and illustrated ones---they are worth keeping around 😊. Hope the fires will be contained soon!
