A SIMPLE way of Understanding High Speed Sync and Flash Sync Speed. With Portrait Photography Demo.

Ever since I was able to use High Speed Sync Off Camera, it really did change the way I approach lighting a scene. This technology though is relatively new, prior to this, ND filters were needed to shoot with large apertures and high shutter speeds. In this video, I try my best to simplify the difference between Flash Sync Speed and High Speed Sync (HSS). Hope you guys enjoy! Don’t forget to Subscribe, Like and Share!

I am new to (serious) flash photography. I understand the faster shutter speed to stop down ambient light, how sync works. However if facing the sun or other very bright scenarios, don't you actually get more power from the flash using traditional sync within the 1/200 1/250 and a ND filter? As you lose some 20%+ flash power in HSS mode? So depending on the shooter rather than rely on a 600w Strobe, a smaller one with ND filters get can the same results? The other concept I am still having a bit of issue with is "freezing motion" we all know shutter speed can do this, but there is another process that has to do with flash speed. Meaning a faster flash discharge can freeze motion even at slower shutter speeds. Since I thought you did such a good job explaining in this video, I thought these would be good questions to ask, and potential ideas for new videos for you.

Great video! I'm going to assume that you were shooting in manual mode? I would like to see an outside hss shoot in aperture priority mode. I've been applying that mode since i saw your video, but want to learn more when shooting aperture using flash.

More clarity indeed! I am always concerned about loosing more power thus I use ND filter instead of HSS for F1.8, it works, nevertheless I will use HSS just because it will reduce weight of filter and holder on my lens.
