Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

One of the best tutorials and demonstrations on greens I've seen. The quick mixes were spot on.Painters don't need a box full of tube colors to get the right green. The old masters had limited colors to work with and their works are unparalleled. Three primaries and white is really all it takes most of the time. There are different reds to choose, cadmium, alizarin, or transparent iron oxide red. Yellows are cadmium, ochre, or Naples. Blues can be ultramarine, cerulean, or phthalo. There are a few more in each family, but those are the most common.

I was saying to another American Painter that in the UK and Ireland we actually do have these vivdly bright greens . The other's too obviously, but they add to the intensity by contrast. Can never have too many greens though, Mother Nature's pallet is infinite!

nice tutorial. I thought of Edgar Payne when you where doing this. Im out in field daily and less reliance of photo in my process. When Im painting ill look my window to get the greens depending on where my lights and darks are at. This is very helpful because Im playing around with cools and warm greens. Thanks this is just I was doing and helps out a lot. nice 👍

The biggest takeaway is that this can be done with any color besides green. However, many people need to see it done for it to click in their brains.(So if you are going to make videos on the other colors I can't wait to watch them) I know this video will help many people. The fact that you started with the primaries helps us not get too bogged down by the other colors and helps us focus on the actual mixing skill. After one gets the primary and white mixing down, it should become an intuitive thing. Do I need to cool it? Do I need to warm it? Do I need to saturate it? Do I need to desaturate it? Then the other colors (like you said in the video lol) can be added to the palette to enhance things. I see many people not having that strong foundation on mixing colors. Without being able to make the many colors, they won't be able to pull out the detailed form of something. I keep bringing this up. The James Webb telescope sees in infrared. Infrared is usually invisible to the naked eye. So how can we see images of it? They map the infrared light to the visible light (the light waves we see) so that we can examine the photos. Painting is similar to this. Getting the exact color is great. However, sometimes you have to make the decision to keep the colors at a certain range so that you keep space for the brightest brights and the darkest darks. So long as the value shifts are relative to each other, the true color shouldn't matter too much. It is close enough and synergizes with the rest of the painting. (unless one are going for true color). Knowing how to mix colors allow one to not make the mistake of placing too bright or too dark of a color on the canvas. It also allows us to have a plan on how we can push the colors to bring out the form throughout the painting. I took a long break from painting. My colors mixing skills were still there. However my form and proportions (I free hand it and don't measure) was out of whack. It took about 2-3 paintings to get back into the groove of my usual 88% likeness. I haven't came to a conclusion on what this means. I know about form and proportions, I know about how to mix and use the colors. I know that my hand-eye-brain connection was a bit rusty and that's why the first painting from the break was bad lol. I wasn't looking at the subject as much, I didn't know how to move my hand to grab the shape. It was strange but at the same time if felt like I was re-evaluating what I learned so far. If you take a long break and it seems like you regressed, that's normal. It's the rust, you'll have to clean it off. The skills are never forgotten.

Great instructional video. You have mentioned more than once about starting with the primary colours plus white and it is finally getting through to me to try that. I have heard before that you can mix any colour with the primaries, but never bothered with it since it wasn’t promoted in any of the beginners’ art classes I took after I retired 10 years ago. I am now really keen to try this since it’s showing me how easy (even though it might be trying because you’re learning) it is to work with just a few essential colours. Thanks so much.🇨🇦
