As a beginner, its hilarious when players on this level use words like simple to describe what they're doing.
@preciateyoupodcast4 ай бұрын
It's a simple concept, played at an extremely high level. And never fear! There is only the familiar and unfamiliar. Nothing is easy or hard. Rather, are we familiar with the material or not... and if so, how familiar?

It's about note choices - not speed. The concept still applies even playing half notes throughout.

Only simple in the conceptual sense and relative to the original material To any normal run of mill musician it’s outrageous lmao

Peter M inspires me to just sit down and play (maybe something similar - but always about 20bpm slower 😅)

The Dm pentatonic feels and sounds so modal and then when it goes to the bridge it sounds out even though it’s not that’s so cool

You made it work Peter because of your rhythmic confidence, the quick tempo of the tune, and the Dmi key resolution. Sounds good!

I’d love to play jazz like that! Been playing for years and am NOWHERE near this guys talent. 🫡❤️

Yowza! I'm determined to turn those first four bars into a 12-key exercise and commit to muscle memory. Beautiful, classic bebop arpeggios, runs, approach notes, and enclosures that are quite the tongue twister for my fingers!

This may often work with i-ii-i-ii progressions of many sort. Not just w/flat 2 chord, and not even only in minor (i.e. also w/ D-e7-D-e7). Try with I-(or IV-)-ii-V-I (play major pent figures over first two chords and on last. Just stick the landing on the 5 chord when you need to. This works likely bc 1-3-4-5-7 in tonic becomes 7-9-10-11-13 in supertonic. Kind of doubles down on the tension of the ii chord. Great trick for the beginner to keep it simple, and pull from their pent licks. Nice! Ty!!!

What I’ve always had a hard time get a handle on is what scales can be superimposed over a whole series of changes and allowing for more focus on rhythm. Never quite got this down.

Can you explain why this works? I mean we can all solo in a minor pentatonic in a given key, but why does it have so much character in this song?
@josephjohnherbert4 ай бұрын
Honestly, it sounds a little empty against the classic chord changes and vibe. You could definitely stick with the minor pentatonic theme though, only switching to Cm, Gm, Ebm or Am (spicy!) on the Eb7.

Theres a third way. Spend years developing your ear and getting the chord tones, scales and the melody in your ears and under your fingers and then on the day follow the melody in the moment and play whatever comes to your ears based on what you feel/hear.
