I'm currently at this particular part of my journey with guitar. This is the clearest strategy Ive heard for how to approach soloing over the changes. That helped so much! Ive seen tons of vids on the topic. Everyone talks about targeting chord tones, not mentioning the importance of the 3rd.

I like this a lot. The 7th is the other important chord note, but just focusing on the 3rd gives me a fighting chance to make it through the changes!
@rockgtr35

I have watched many videos on this subject along with trying to do this unsuccessfully for some time. I have never heard or thought to focus on the 3rd. Which, of course, makes total sense as it is arguably the most important chord tone. I honestly can't believe I never put that together. One of those "DUH" moments for me for sure. I was always trying to focus on the root notes of the chords and it never sounded like what I was looking for. I can't wait to work on this later! Thanks so much!

The way you teach! I can't tell you how many "simplified" videos I've watched, and was still left overwhelmed, confused, and frustrated. thank you so much for what you do, this really helped and opened up a whole new way of thinking. it wasn't too riddled with theory language to where my brain shuts down from mental gymnastics. It was just right, even up to the tempo of your speaking to where I didn't find it necessary to rewind to grasp the last thing you said. love your playing love your teaching thank you!

Also, I’ve not seen anyone else play guitar as effortlessly as you do and your notes are so clean and precise. Thanks a million…you really know your craft. Be well. 💯

Thankyou so much man!! Im a young producer who learned a bunch about music theory and went and put in the time to work on my craft. As of recent, I was getting the hang of ‘playing the changes’, but didn’t know that there was a way to really learn it other than just solely working on it with no clue of what it is. I didn’t even know there was a name for it. Much thanks man!!

What a fantastic lesson. I just found your channel and I learned more about combining Rythm and Lead in under 10 mins than I have from the last 3 years of my quest to become a proficient electric guitar player. I have been playing guitar since I was 8 years old, mostly folk, country, classic rock and pop from the 70's, 80's and 90's on acoustic. In the last 3 or 4 years I have started on a quest to live out my dream of mastering the electric guitar. I am fairly proficient with the Pentatonic, Blues and Diatonic scales (including mode). Right now I am working on Chord Progressions, Nashville Numbering, Triads and phrasing. My goal is song writing. THIS!! THIS!! THIS!! is the key to unlocking the ability to write solos. Thank you so much.I am now a new subscriber and follower of your channel. 5*****

So good! Thanks for sharing Jack, this was really helpful. I think the next step for me is to learn where the third sits in relation to the different chord shapes, and memorise that. Learning that will also give me a quick way to see the fifth and so on. Cheers, Thor

Excellent lesson. Nicely presented. Great “stepping stone” approach that is easily attainable, but at the same time encompassing a TON of information. So many online lessons and you tube put too much info in a lesson leaving the student overwhelmed to the point of inaction. ID and target thirds in any progression. Boom! That I can do.

I’m in!! “Playing over the changes” oh lord, have I seen MANY videos and MANY you-tube guitarists talking about it again and again and… Especially one guy, who plays amazing, great guy, buuut he talks A LOT about it. The more he talks, the more I get lost. Then Im back a few days later, to a new session of talk and playing. Then…. you shows up. And with your calm being and great way of showing and explaining, it suddenly makes sense and I can understand it. THANK YOU. Not only are you a great player, but also a great teacher.
