A year later......mats were virtually unobtainable here in England and ridiculously costly, but are beginning to appear again at a reasonable cost. So I have purchased my first batch here and therefore thank you for this informative presentation!

Mine smell like Hepatitis and I still make bad cuts sometimes. Nice vid. I just bought ten the other day so I might tie some like this. Mark them with different bands. Thank you sir. Btw with a plastic cling wrap stick , like the kind you use at a warehouse, can allow you to take your clean drop and reattach to get another cut or more. Save money! It works for Toyama so it will work for you✌🏻

Nice tamishigiri! Seems like a good cutting sword. Is it tip heavy? It seems to want to keep on going after the cut. I would get yelled at if my blade went past 90 degrees to my body on a horizontal cut. This was years ago, and I can't remember the term for squeezing the tsuka.

The Dojo - Samurai and Ninja Martial Arts • 6 days ago Sorry. I do not have any of that type of Okinawan weapon. It is cool though. I used to have a few of them back in the 1980's. They are unwieldy, but super fun to swing around. Won't be doing anything on those.

Could i get some bamboo that grows near me or even just plant my own and use that? it wouldnt be the same as tatami mats obviously but itd be free and sorry if this is a stupid question im still pretty new to everything and i wont be cutting anything for a while anyways so it doesnt really matter rn

Sure could. Bamboo works great and grows super-fast, but it takes a long time to get thick enough. Check on the species of bamboo and make sure it is the type that grows thick. Grow a few years. Good to go.
