DISCLAIMER : We are not electricians. This is just an explanation of how we ran the AC and DC wires within our van!
Alright, so in this video we are going to walk you through the process we took in order to run both AC and DC wires within our van. We'll also show you how to connect your outlets in parallel using your AC wiring. As well as how to connect several lights in parallel to a dimmer switch using your DC wiring.
Now if you're looking for more information regarding 12V DC and 120V AC, here's a video that does a pretty decent job at explaining the difference between the two.
AC/DC : • Difference between AC ...
If you're unsure of what size and amount of wire you'll be needing for your van, it's good to make a list of all the items you plan on powering, the amps they require, and where they'll be located within your van. Here's a couple links to a wire size chart and calculator that can help you figure out exactly what you'll need.
Wire Size Calculator : www.wirebarn.com/Wire-Calcula...
Wire Size Calculator 2 : www.explorist.life/wire-sizin...
Wire Size Chart : www.bluesea.com/resources/1437
Now we ended up getting 250ft of DC wire and 60ft of AC wire.
14AWG Marine Grade Wire : amzn.to/3Mh26qZ
12AWG Marine Grade Wire : amzn.to/3K3wDah
10/3 Marine Grade Wire : amzn.to/3xzCVf6
You'll need to gather several supplies in order to run and connect both your AC and DC wires.
1/2 Split Loom : amzn.to/3M5Zpbm
3/4 Split Loom : amzn.to/3M7Uery
1" Conduit : tinyurl.com/mr449n4s
Zip Ties : amzn.to/3uMPSAn
Straight Blade : amzn.to/38QZGk9
Wire Stripper : amzn.to/38Y72Tc
Better Wire Stripper : amzn.to/3OhtaYM
Ferrule Crimper : amzn.to/3Mh2ypb
Heat Gun : amzn.to/3McCkUu
Wire Fish Tape : amzn.to/3MaP5in
Heat Shrink Connector Kit : amzn.to/3vsAW9y
Heat Shrink Kit : amzn.to/3M9qs5M
Ferrule Kit : amzn.to/3rAXt2T
Wire Nut Kit : amzn.to/3uQacRk
Once you have your wires ran, it's a good idea to label them so you don't get confused when you start to make your connections.
Label Maker : amzn.to/3OkVTfq
Now you can start connecting things together. We ended up going with outlets that had USB and USB C connections on them.
Outlets : amzn.to/3uPdCUr
If you're curious on the Lights and Switches we have in our van, here's a link.
Lights : amzn.to/3EmqR20
Dimmer Switches : amzn.to/3JRiI6I
When you wire your outlets, make sure to place them in a box.
Outlet Box : amzn.to/3MeODQ7
Now in order to power your outlets and DC appliances, you'll need to connect all of your wiring to a Fuse Panel. We went with a 2 in 1.
Fuse / Breaker Panel : amzn.to/3rxYSr4
Cable Gland Kit :
If you're unsure of what size fuse you need, here's a link to a calculator made by Explorist Life. I highly recommend checking out their website and channel for any of your electrical needs.
Explorist Life : www.explorist.life/
Fuse Calculator : www.explorist.life/fuse-sizin...
Fuse Kit : amzn.to/3jMnfNn
20 Amp Breaker : amzn.to/3EjHQ5b
At the end of our video we mention a band we think you should go check out called Durry. Here's a link to their channel.

Y'all are awesome. Informative - not as many details as some more technical channels but really fun to watch and you help me get a sense for how a whole section of work will go. You're also calibrated to my skill level somewhat which is helpful haha. Honestly if someone would just throw you an entire TV show budget you two would absolutely crush. I think there's so much serendipity and inventiveness and adventure in all of this and you guys are like the best possible messengers of that whole vibe

At first I thought you were kind of a goofy guy and remind me of one of our friends. But after watching more and learning a little more about you I think you are a smart well put together person. And Julie, well something about her is amazing. Love watching you guys and hope your new van and adventures turn out great. Maybe after our van is done (Just got it 2 weeks ago) we might run into each other on the road. Just saw the video about Archer and sorry about that. We have had many cats and dogs and it is never easy. We currently have a Aussie (Chewie) that is my best friend next to my wife and all build plans for the van include sleeping and riding spot for him. Keep the videos coming.

Hi Guys. I know this is off subject but I thought I would ask I would ask on your most recent video. Could aluminum square tubing be glued to the bare metal floor. Would be less money than 80/20. And put mass loaded vinyl in between with thinsulate on top and plywood. The vinyl for sound deadening and vapor barrier and thinsulate instead of rigid foam board. Thoughts on spacing and thickness of plywood would be great. I did watch your video from the start. You used 2x2 and painted them, sealed with a waterproofing sealer.
@dogcatmanvan
@dogcatmanvan 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I've seen a couple people go with aluminum tubing fro their floor joists. It's just a pricier option, but you don't have to worry about water proofing it. I think the vinyl and thinsulate would work fine. Are you asking about spacing between each joist? I think we tried to stay around 12" on center, but it's dependent on the size van you're working with. We went with 1/2" plywood to save on head space.

Is it worth me saying generally you don’t need AC for phones, laptops, cameras and such. I think even XBox,They generally run on 5 14 or 19 volts and you can get adapters for 12 volt outlets, I’m running my Smart tv on 12-19volt converter 🙃…………..I’ll get my coat

@@Miles_To_Go if batteries are low then the less efficient inverter is also out of the question, unless on electric hook up which would then charge the batteries anyway, you do have a point, I was just suggesting a lot of the equipment would be better charged not using the inverter if offgrid 🙃👍
@dogcatmanvan
@dogcatmanvan 2 жыл бұрын
Would you have any comparisons on rate of charge when looking at AC vs DC charging of appliances like that? Maybe I can include that in a future video. While we traveled before we had our electrical system, we had a charger for our computers that charged off the vehicles 12v, but it would always die quicker than it would charge. Are we just lame oh's with shit adapters?
@ExploringJ
@ExploringJ 2 жыл бұрын
90% of the stuff you listed for 120v is DC, as an electrician by trade you will use a ton more electric up by using the ac converter cords that come with the phones, laptop, camera batteries , Xbox. You can run a Xbox off a high amp cigarette lighter if you want. Charge all your equipment off a lightning usb
@OneTrackMind
@OneTrackMind 2 жыл бұрын
easier said than done. getting a USB-C port with high enough PD to charge those devices at a reasonable rate, or at all, is surprisingly hard, and creates a lot of heat. Until GaN chargers make their way into the DC/VanLife world, it's a bit of a tough challenge.

I've messed a little bit with running them off DC, but I've found that the item drains quicker than it charges when I'm using it. Is there DC chargers out there that you could recommend with a higher output?

@@dogcatmanvan tbh, it's a little too late for all that. You would need 8 guage wire going to a breaker from the load side of a the batteries. The batteries combined would need to equally 480v (that would charge your car battery in 15 minutes) total for DC fast charging. Minimum of 12 guage wire going to DC outlets. New USBC 20A (some now 30A) could power some devices without them dying.
