An estimated 200,000 children, most under 13, have lost a parent or primary caregiver to COVID-19. Two years into the pandemic, there is still no coordinated system to identify who these kids are or how to get help to them. Reporting for TODAY, NBC’s Cynthia McFadden meets a group of siblings who were forced to band together after losing their single mom to the virus last year.

It is hard to respect any parent who does not make advance preparations for care of their children in the event that they pass away. As a single mom raising 2 daughters, from the day they were born I made sure that if anything were to happen to me my children would have the funds and support that they needed. For single parents, life insurance is as essential as food and shelter.

I'm crying at what the younger ones say about their sister and her reaction. Too sweet. It's so sad that they lost their mom but so great that they could stay together. I'm so glad they've had that help from Miss Janie. Being an adult is not easy; I am 31 and have no idea what I am doing. We need to do better for these babies who are losing parents. Teach life skills in school. Budgeting, credit, taxes, all the insurance needed, etc. The hospital should have also had a social worker call to help these kids get financial and living assistance. Food stamps, rental vouchers, and maybe financial help to buy necessities.

You are correct. They see the paperwork errors , but don't have the foresense to call the survivors and say" listen, there are a couple of errors in your paper work. Can we meet so that we can correct them? Then rush it thru so that you can get your much needed funding." They just let people linger in misery, instead of easing them. I pray that these children continue to thrive. And that they stay together. And thanks to the man and woman who assisted them.

I feel for these kids, God bless them. This was my biggest fear for my young adult kids when I got COVID. It is really important to have a plan and ongoing conversations with your children especially if you are a single parent with limited supports. My kids know where to find the life insurance information, the mortgage and utility bill info, and the family friends and relatives they can turn to for guidance.

There have been 6 million deaths worldwide. This should be a time of unity. Yet after two years, everyone is still fighting over vaccines and masks. I have seen it on both sides. If you choose to wear a mask when out in public, I am not going to get in your face about it and throw a tantrum like a three year old. And it’s the same if you don’t want to wear one. If we would all just mind our business, the world would be a better place. But people would rather bully one another because they don’t have the same views on a face covering or vaccine. My condolences to these children who are growing up without their mama. 💔

Wow! What an amazing, but heart wrenching story. Listening to the family talk about losing their mom and what's next......tears 😢falling. God always sends an angel (Mrs. Janine). I am glad this program shed some light on this. I'm wondering why haven't we heard more about children who lost their parents.

As the oldest of five children of a single mother this situation was my greatest fear my entire teen life so I never had kids of my own. God carried me and mom lived to age 85 and I was so grateful! Being the oldest child is a tremendous responsibility forever!

I wish I could sit down with their mother....no, I wish I could lay at their mothers feet and just soak in her wisdom. Her children are incredible, and I want to know her ways. I am a single mom of five....I can't imagine dying, but its always a fear of mine in the back of my head. I am all they have....so I try to instill as much wisdom as I can in them....this mom was clearly incredible...it shows through her childrens eyes.

This was sad, yet a bright ray of hope, and a testament to the fact that with LOVE, perseverance, commitment, and teamwork, ANYTHING is possible! Thank GOD for big sis, Janie and her husband, and the GoFund contributors who stepped up and SHOWED OUT! The way that lil sis gave big sis her “flowers” so publicly and beautifully was AMAZING! I pray that community leaders and state/federal organizations have reached out to assist this family in remaining on track, as they learn to live without their beloved mother. Prayers and the creator’s most abundant blessings upon them all!!!

Great to point out. There has been so much waste regarding funds and isn't this how it always happens? In my town a restaurant got over $300,000 in funds while the local food bank that was serving hundreds got $200,000. It makes zero sense. A lot of fraud.
