A Small Milling CNC Fail - The End Mill survived

Just when you think all is going well...
You hit the wrong direction button in jog mode and the 7mm milling bit forces the tight clamp off the work-piece, with very little doubt that there will be some degree of damage; least of all the 7mm End Mill.
The good News: Nothing was damaged at all, I just re-inserted the bit after checking the tram of the spindle to table and all was well.
I learned a few things: -
Label the buttons better
Have the clamps fitted outside of the milling path (obviously)
And dial down the current for the ODrive (these have got immense power, I think a stepper motor would have struggled to do this).
The machine is a Sieg X1 Micro Mill that I am converting to CNC to help with an electric car conversion. The CNC drive units will all eventually be Brush-less DC motors, including the spindle motor.
The current Y-Axis on this machine and lights in my shed are all powered by Solar Energy.

Thank you, it's working a treat and is very robust, so should be able to churn out lots of parts when complete 😀

If you ever crash a cnc, do it with the spindle running. Less chance of a bearing damage

Very true, although I haven't heard any flat spot noise from the bearings yet, I must have been lucky where the clamp just slid off the soft aluminium. I think the mill would have trouble milling the clamp at that speed though ;-D

Good stuff Neil....im enjoying ur posts. With the odrive and bldc....are u getting good positional accuracy like youd get with steppers using microsteps?

Hi, thank you, I am currently sitting at the computer tapping in code for a circular-cut mode... All this will tie into CNC once 3-Axis and Brushless spindle motor are all fitted. The accuracy is very good and fast, with no worries of lost steps or little power at high speed, something steppers suffer from. Although there is a difference in accuracy if there is more friction in the table slides, although only in the region of 0.01mm, where I haven't yet tried to reduce this yet. I may just go for ball screws to reduce it further.
