In this gardening in Canada video we take an in-depth look at the Miracle Gro (miracle-gro) succulent and cacti mix for potting plants in cold climates and Canada! We talk about the soil porosity of the the miracle grow succulent / cacti mix and how that effect the plants growth. Then we discover the the root systems we see on succulent plants and how that effects the soil type we want to make for out succulents. And lastly we build our own succulent mix using potting soil and house hold stuff. Aka soil amendments.

Thanks for watching! This was a mega fun video to make but in all seriousness I would look into altering this soil to make it work for your area. There are many different things you can use to help fluff the soil. What are you ideas for things you can add to the soil?

@@GardeningInCanada super excited to find your channel! I love plants and science so its the BEST mix :) Does mulch differ from orchid bark? I've tried researching it but have never found a good explanation. I always thought of orchid bark as holding water so I was surprised to see wood chips in your cactus mix. I did a quick review of your soil amendment videos and didn't see one about wood chips so if it doesn't exist, I'd loveee to see it! I really appreciate your advice and knowledge!!!!

I like hearing this from a Plant and Soil Sciences professional rather than some KZfaqr who is just confident enough to fool you into believing him and presents their approach as common fact. I like your channel because it's like cutting out the middle man! Also, you're in Canada; I'm not, but im in a northerly state so your approach is a way better approx guide than the others whom all seem to be in western, southwestern, southern states or Australia/New Zealand. 👏🏿

Ugh, my local garden centre told me to use the MG cactus and succulent mix for my key lime tree. Within a month, it was overgrowing white mold due to excessive moisture. This was partly my fault due to watering frequency, but citrus need to nearly completely dry out, in *much* more quickly draining soil to begin with. Even with perfect watering and ample drainage holes it was guaranteed to root rot. I repotted that one really quickly. Thanks for the video!

I liked your video, especially the possible substitutions for perlite. I am a New Jersey citrus enthusiast trying to grow citrus in an unheated greenhouse and I think I share a lot of root rot issues. I am going to try a light succulent mix from local materials (pine bark , biochar, gravel and a little perlite) . and your video was inspiring.

WOW thanks so much thats a huge compliment. And honestly this is what works best for me, i know its unconventional but its working here in a cold climate year after year. I am so not in love with perlite it floats and is just a nightmare for me if i can reduce the use of it i am happy. Let me know how it goes! my best friend is trying to grow citrus trees as well and shes always struggling with similar scenarios.

@@GardeningInCanada I've heard if you put a mulch or an inch of sand over the soil, the perlite doesn't float as much because the water sort of leaks and the sand weighs it all down so it just moistens instead of like creating a pond allowing perlite to float up. I don't use perlite tho, I use vermiculite and never had a problem with floating issues. Just some stuff I heard on the internet xD

Random question. I've been studying fertilizer for succulents. I looked at my local plant shop. The Espona succulent fertilizer only has NPK 1,2,2. Which didn't seem like enough of anything! So I looked at the jacks African violet fertilizer and it's NPK 12, 36, 14. Is it a good idea to try that on succulents?? Obviously I also need to water it down like 4x the amount the container says? It recommends 1 TBS per gallon of water.

If so where should I place the rocks just mix them in the soil or place them in top of soil or on bottom of soil. Thank you for posting this video it was very helpful.

I would definitely recommend doing a mixture of some sort to help increase porosity. And just through the rocks right into the soil mixture itself. The key is to ensure it falls apart when you squeeze it.

Yeah most potting soils sold on the market are quite terrible. Pro-mix is decent to start vegetables in but vegetables don't really have to live longer than 6-9 months really so potting soil is less important as long as it's not complete trash. Unfortunately for me and fruit tree and berry growing people, potting soil are nearly useless. I've seen some people have success with fox farm products, but I've never tried. I've resorted to using a simple 50-50 mix of coco coir and vermiculite, maybe more vermiculite, and then mulch and fertilize on top. Haven't lost anything due too soil issues but I do get apple problems...because I I'm bad at pest controls. Citrus and other plants seem to do fairly good. I worry for my blueberries tho because when they came, they came in pure wood mulch. So in like 5 years when that decays, so in another 3-4 years, I'm sort of expecting to lose a blueberry or two due to root rot. Is it possible to try a mix of 30 percent pumice, 40 vermiculite, and then like 30 percent coco coir or something even like 20 percent horticultural sand, 30-40 percent pumice, 25-35 percent vermiculite, and then 5-25 percent coco coir? Idk if coco coir decomposes tho.

@@GardeningInCanada well, I suppose that's why some house plants are so popular: impossible to kill. We don't have this luxury if we want to grow many fruit trees like citrus where if the water doesn't drain within a few hours or days, the tree will die and die fast. Unfortunately, all the potting soils on the market besides for a select few that I can't get really, are mostly ground up trees and growing a tree in rotting organic matter and dead trees is not a good idea. But it is proposed by KZfaq and all that and it's not great long term practice except vegetables and short term solutions. But not everyone can fill a bed or pot with compost every few years, but an inch on top much easier if the rest is more or less inorganic material. :)
