Mustafe decides to leave his quiet life in Finland when copper and gold are discovered in his ancestral land, Somaliland. These riches promise to fulfil his lifelong dream to help his struggling country of birth.
Mustafe mines gold, gemstones and cobalt, a metal more valuable than diamonds. But he soon realises that all that glitters is not gold.
While his children grapple with culture shock, Mustafe finds the clan disputes, which fuelled the Somali civil war, impossible to avoid.
Golden Land is a film by Inka Achte.

Thanks Al Jazeera for such enlightening documentaries. As an addict of your documentaries, I had always wondered what motivates your organisation to make such documentaries but now I finally have my answer in this one. It has enhanced my ideals of co-existence and perseverance. Mustafe is one tough nut misery and human suffering has failed to crack. May God almighty continue to bless him and his country. Good lesson to all of mankind here.

I always wanted to do something over here but find it hard dealing with the people/Government because of vast different cultural experiences and tribal mindsets. After few months of being here I have been uninspired and experienced low mood. Watching this documentary have re energized me and given me strength. But Mustafe is one of the new leaders, he has established cooperation with another clan. There is no reason Mustafe could not become a political leader in Somaliland in the future. It is easy to hide in Europe, but the brave are returning to their homelands and developing the future. Each person who returns smooths the way a little bit for the next person and the next generation. The little girl mentioned people walking on the stones, and her father told her they would one day pave the roads. Remember, the roads in Finland have not always been paved. Finnish people paved the roads in Finland, and Somalis will pave the roads in Somaliland! Mustafe's children will see so much change in their lifetimes as long as there are brave men like their father.

Jon Michael, I hope you are able to make your way to Eritrea soon. I believe the world is suffering now, but there is change coming which will be better for everyone. As soon as the dictatorship falls, (and they always do), be ready to return and contribute as Mustafe is doing in Somaliland. In the meantime, prepare by being educated and informed. Good fortune to you and Eritrea.

This was a powerful and necessary story, I applaud the bravery of Mustafe and every member of his family. I feel their return to the continent profoundly echoes, that given an opportunity to fend for ourselves, grow self and society, young and old African migration to the south of the continent and Europe is MAINLY done to change very dire lived experiences. I am happy for Jasmine, she was very expressive and had these authentic expressions not minimized by the changes. Glad that the children had this two-year stint in the motherland. Once again am in awe of this family and for Mustafe bringing about a mining collaboration inclusive of the diverse clans. This strategy highly places Africans at the table, rather than the strategy of our governments selling our rights. Consequently, leaving us to 'participate' as poor and sickly bystanders who live in destroyed lands after the ferocious ravaging of our resources, lands, and labor by multinationals who will never care for the being of Africa and its people. ( we are dispensable people)
