Burnell Russell is not a household name amongst NHRA Top Fuel fans, but is held in high regard among those who have raced in the class. Burnell's son Darrell, was one of the sport's up and coming superstars until he lost his life while racing at the 2004 NHRA Craftsman Nationals outside of St. Louis.
Darrell's brother Chris was an integral part of his brother's racing endeavors as well as Burnell. Burnell helped his sons realize their dreams of drag racing. For six months, Chris had devised a plan to give back to his father who had so selflessly supported his boys.
Chris purchased a ride in Larry Dixon's two-seat dragster for Burnell, and for several months did what he had to do to keep the prized gift from his dad. In this video from CompetitionPlus.tv, watch as the plan unfolds.

Tear jerker Great Video, Man the NHRA really missed the Boat on this one. And the way that they (nhra) treated and banned the 3 X T/ F World Champ is an embarrassment on them! It really affected my love for Sport negatively leaving a bad taste in my mouth. I hope and wish nothing but a bright and prosperous future for Larry and his team! And I hope to see more stories like this for the bad ass fueler!

Any high level competition becomes political when money gets involved. The worst part of it is nothing is gonna happen about it, nobody can do anything about it, so now they know they can get away with it, so expect to see a lot more behaviour like that in the future, as much as it sucks

Yep. That was some crazy bullshit. All started over a used part of a chassis that still had a forgotten, once legal, Cert sticker on it, left by accident. Did the NHRA REALLY think that Larry was trying to pull some sneaky crap? I'm sure that the NHRA had wickedness in it's mind before they even found the sticker, because they didn't have their hand in Larry's money pot for this project. The greed is unreal. I'm glad I run my cars with the IHRA, and never had to get involved with the NHRA politics shit show.

Wow Darrell's brother looks so much like Darrell did! As to Larry, he has always been a great guy. He won TF @ Bristol several years ago, my friend won super stock...we were waiting FOREVER as the photographers took picture after picture after picture of Larry and the Fueler...they finally pulled the dragster off & we pushed the SS car up for picture... (Took about 30 seconds for our pictures lol)... so as we go to get on the golf carts up flies Larry in the little pit car...popped open the trunk and pulled out half a dozen cases of Miller light and handed it to us....apologizing for how long we had to wait behind him to get our pictures. Class, and cool! As to Darrell, also a good guy, class guy...Ironically he was killed on a run next to Scott Kalitta...very sad irony. RIP to them both...
