Another excerpt from the 1971 "Homewood Sessions" featuring Leon Russell and a few good friends such as Don Nix and Furry Lewis. Furry can be seen several times throughout the video.
This song is, in many people's opinion, one of the finest ballads ever written. I agree!
From the video,
Leon Russell & Friends - "Homewood Sessions"
Live at Vine Street Theater, Hollywood, California, USA.
or
"Vine Street Theater presents Homewood"
Originally aired in 1971 on PBS, actually KCET in Los Angeles at the Vine Street Theater on Hollywood and Vine, a theater with a little studio in the back part of the building, which is not there anymore. They shot 6 hours, but only broadcast 1 hour, unscripted and unrehearsed.
It was the first national "stereo" rock-and-roll TV broadcast - that's why Leon agreed to do it.
Billed as "Session - Leon Russell with a Few of His Friends":
Don Nix
Chuck Blackwell
Joey Cooper
Don Preston
Carl Radle
Kathi McDonald
Claudia Linnear
John Gallie
Jim Horn
Furry Lewis
and, of course, Sweet Emily

One night my late husband and I were listening to music. He was singing this song to me. He asked me to make sure that this was played at his funeral when he passed. Because of circumstances, I wasn't able to play it. But, I did however have "I was singing this song for you" with music notes as quotes, put on his headstone. Needless to say, this song will always hold a place in my heart, and I always have the tissues handy when I listen to it. I am blessed that I had him in my life. Rest in peace Daniel R. Majewski.

Oh mercy, still loving Leon!! No other voice like his, and that long blonde hair and blue eyes killed us girls!! My boyfriend, my brother, and I saw him, also Billy Preston, at the Atlanta Speedway...Years later, my brother would ' play this for me, hundreds of times! But my brother, who was always my best friend and protector, died almost a year ago....I have not handled his death well at all.... still trying to learn to live with out him here. And for comfort, I play the songs we loved and that he played and sang to me. Thanks, bro, for a life of love, loyalty, music and MUSIC..I hear you still in each song...

Went to a place in Tampa Florida called Blueberry Hill on the water for dinner. Noticed a long line to get in. My wife and I went to the front of the line and I said to the doorman, we're just here for dinner. He gave me a confusdd look and said Ok, and let us walk right in to a great booth over looking a stage. We ordered dinner and come to find out there was a concert. We had no idea... All of a sudden on Stage came out, £eon Russell & Edgar Winter!! We were stunned to say the least of their performance. And yes Leon played this song and we were 30 feet away eating dinner! Will never forget it! ❤

I met Leon years ago as he did a Show at the Bull Shoals theater of the arts. He was a really nice guy..... I helped volunteer that night, when he showed up with his band I helped load their equipment on the stage and when the show started and in between sets I had to run down from the belcony out the front door of the theater to a side door by the stage and open and close the curtains then run back around to the front door back up to the belcony and run the stage lights for the show. I'd do it all again if I had the chance..... 😀

I've been so many places in my life and time I've sung a lot of songs I've made some bad rhymes I've acted out my life in stages With ten thousand people watching But we're alone now And I'm singing this song to you I know your image of me is what I hoped to be I treated you unkindly But darling can't you see There's no one more important to me Baby can't you see through me? 'Cause we're alone now and I'm singing this song to you You taught me precious secrets Of a true love You wanted nothing You came out in front When I was hiding But now I'm so much better And if my words don't come together Listen to the melody 'Cause my love is in there hiding I love you in a place Where there's no space or time I love you for my life You're a friend of mine And when my life is over Remember when we were together We were alone And I was singing this song to you I love you in a place Where there's no space or time I love you for my life You're a friend of mine And when my life is over Remember when we were together We were alone and I was singing this song to you We were alone And I was singing this song to you We were alone and I was singing this song Singing this song to you

Leon-A National Treasure. -So much Soul emanating from this Man. Leon probably played on more records in his long career that just about any one else. RIP Brother 🇺🇸

How thrilling to see another person refer to “the master of space and time” Leon Russell as as “National Treasure.” I have felt this way as long as I’ve known of him. True! He’s undoubtedly the Mozart of our time!

So sad. I had a black light poster of Leon (playin bass, Concert for Bangladesh) in my room when I was a teenager- circa 1974...life is short. My parents are gone, my brother has passed and all my heroes are dying. However, his music lives on & on. Leon was a musical force on every front in the music industry.

I surely can relate to what you said tmacart - life is short, the losses are often time too much to bear, but the hope is knowing one day we'll reunite again - 'over there ▬ on the other side.' ~ RIP, Leon ~

This song still gets to me after all these years. Leon put everything into his music and that is why his music will continue to stand the test of time. Miss you Leon.

Had a chance to see this great Man . I was set to drive right up through Virginia and go right to the show. A big ass snow came thru. Whoosh! 😄Leon probably didn't make it there either. He passed not long after. I love you Dear Mr. Russell. I love you so very dearly. 🙏🌹🕊

Leon... watching this I am falling in love with you all over again. One of music's truest souls ever. He always was singing to the deepest depths of his soul. You can still feel it every time you hear one of his songs! They bring me to my knees every time. Takes me back to places that just don't exist in this society anymore. A place in time that all of us that lived in it will never forget. Rock on Leon, I'm a lifer forevermore.♥️
