The irony and tragedy of Iron Hands is that their Primarch, Ferrus Manus, wanted them to be the opposite what they are. He wanted to find away to remove his iron hands and show them the value of natural human strength. And when the Iron Hands saw their Primarch die, deep down they feared that if their Primarch wasn't strong enough, they might not be strong enough. So sad to see what the Iron Hands have become. Ferrus was ruthless and demanded a high standard but he was also a realist and extremely logical. That is not true, Salamanders will go out of their way to save civilians, they plan their strategy around it often. Loads of the chapters will, it is why they clash often with the inquisition because the marines whilst loyal to the emperor, most of them know he is not a god and didn't want to be worshipped like one so often clash with the fanatics. Like the months of shame for example, the Space Wolves literally took on the Inquisition and Grey Knights to stop them wiping out a whole planet. Blood Angels, Ultramarines, some of the other chapters as well try to avoid civilian casualties where they can and save populations if they can, but like the whole of 40k there are huge threats and horrible choices to make. Some of the marines are complete arseholes and have little regard for human life, like the Iron Hands often do or the Templars etc.
@basteala5253 ай бұрын
You could probably argue roughly half of the Loyalists don't fit that mold. Salamanders are extremely moral. Space Wolves are decent with civilians as well. Ultramarines aren't too bad *most* of the time, and as I recall, Blood Angels are decent aside from their whole struggle with the Red Thirst. Assuming reasonable cultural continuity with their successor Chapters (which is why I did not mention Imperial Fists >.> ) That said, that still leaves plenty of marines who are absolute douchebags, and it's even more ironic that most of your assholes are from Codex Compliant chapters.

This is why I will forever love the Iron Hands, at the surface level everyone sees them as arsehole robo-marines, but if you look past the surface and look back at their history, and what Ferrus Manus wished for them when the fighting was done, you see a legion/Chapter damaged beyond repair, forever scarred by the brutal losses during the Heresy and the betrayal and loss of their Primarch, a Primarch that would never fulfill his desire to shed the metal from his hands and teach his sons to not depend so heavily on their growing obsession with augmentation. When I look upon the Iron Hands I see men, who, in the absence of their father's guidance, have sunk into the embrace of their obsession and the efficiency of cold logic, because to them there is no alternative. This is the power grief can have, if allowed to fester.
