Join us for a gripping journey into the operating room with "A Spine Surgeon's Worst Nightmare 😱."
This video shares the harrowing experience of a spine surgeon faced with one of the most challenging cases: a patient needing distal spine surgery and fusion to correct instability. The surgery takes an unexpected turn when the surgeon encounters the patient’s poor bone quality, complicating the process of securing screws. The tension peaks when one screw slips out, introducing a new level of complexity and risk to the procedure.
This real-life story not only highlights the technical challenges of spine surgery but also brings to the forefront the critical importance of bone health. Discover how a seemingly small setback like a screw slipping can lead to significant complications, including the need for revision surgery after the patient suffers a bone fracture.
More than just a surgery tale, this video is a wake-up call about the importance of maintaining bone health through adequate calcium and vitamin D intake, alongside physical activities that apply force to bones, reinforcing their density and strength according to Wolf's Law.
Whether you're interested in the realities of spine surgery, the importance of bone health, or simply love medical stories that dive deep into the challenges healthcare professionals face, this video is for you. Get ready for a compelling insight into the importance of preparation, prevention, and the unexpected twists in the life of a spine surgeon.

I would think that a surgeons worst nightmare would be losing a patient or paralyzing a patient, and maybe bad bone /screw slipping is a somewhat close second. As I have said before, I think you are great and I love your videos. I would love to talk to you or contact you about an idea I have about some hardware ideas, I'm a retired machinist/millwright.

Do you start all your patients on bisphosphonates or get a bone density study?

You don't want to strip out someone's bone...lol I'd have nightmares about that, too. Screwing a fastener in and not having it bite into anything solid. BTW, now that you've been working out, is your A1C down?

Just out of curiosity, When you increased the screws diameter did you also end up throwing in bone cement? I feel like I rarely ever see cement used in spine surgery. I am not sure if that is just physician preference/ no indication to use cement. But we use cement alllllll the time when putting in total knees on elderly patient, or patients with terrible bone quality. Any thoughts on this?

Hello. I live in San Antonio and I have a rare condition with a winged scapula not the thoracic nerve but the other nerve with the s and moving my scapula further and further to the left on my left side. It’s gotten worse and worse over the last 6 months. I’ve seen four doctors each one being just as surprised as the last. Physical therapy won’t work because the nerve damage is to far but so quickly is what’s making everyone go huh just thought you might have an idea.

Get a DEXA Scan - diet and exercise are not always enough. Been there with BAD osteoporosis and a spine fracture - destroyed my life for 3 years. I try to avoid taking drugs, but Evenity was a miracle - regained 16% BMD in a year.
