You should give ruby a try. Rubies are chosen for CMM tools as the stone is one of the only self lubricating materials on the planet. Much better than diamond. Might spin for longer :).

A few years ago I have been asked to make a spinning top with a diamond tip. The aim was to have very long spin times, because diamond has a very low coefficient of friction. I made various tests and it turned out that if the pointed tip is harder than the spinning surface, the tip digs a microscopic hole in the spinning surface, during the spin, this increases the tip friction, and reduces the spin time. Also, the top spinning in the microscopic hole tends to wobble, (nutation). So my conclusion was that a pointed tip harder than the spinning surface is not desirable, if longest spin times are wanted. But a diamond spinning surface would be interesting. I tried a polycrystalline diamond spinning surface; it didn't work well; polycrystalline diamond is binded diamond powder, it is apparently smooth, but also slightly abrasive, with a poor coefficient of friction. Monocrystalline diamond would be needed. Unluckily monocrystalline diamond can't be shaped concave, which is needed for a spinning surface. So I had to give up and I never used diamonds in my spinning surfaces, (nor in my tops).

What if a flat surface but spinning ina a way to make it concave or a balancing mechanism?
@iacoposimonelli7191
@iacoposimonelli7191 Жыл бұрын
@@A11V1R15 , this might be interesting, but I don't know how it could be made exactly. Maybe a computer could drive the movements of the flat diamond surface for to keep the spinning top on it, but this is too complicated for my possibilities. Maybe some magnets could keep the top centered on the diamond, but then there is magnetic drag. I don't know any easy solution.

I have a few that are customs and I love em! The wife on the other hand not so much, I tend to like Titanium and other more expensive metals lol! Ive actually messed around with resin and wood like burl and walnut, wood for outer ring with swirled resin inter ring and wood and brass shaft. anyhow turned out very nice, kind of elegant.

Brass and silver and copper I love. Seems to me a better option would be to have the tip rounded over not like a cutting point so it is not forced to spin in a precise center point as precision would be what it's all about and not having that exactly will hinder. Also, be good to spin on copper or a thin coat of lead on copper to use as a bearing material and even a swipe of oil to boot. You can get a diamond-tipped dressing stone at Bang good for about 6-7bucks. Probably 17-24bucks in the states. I picked one up to make a glass cutting device. Had to clean the diamond up with a dermal-type tool and diamond abrasive it came out nice and clean. I have a Taig Laith have you any idea if your bit holder will fit mine?? Very nice work!!

Where did you get that diamond tip from? Is it from a specialty whole diamond machine tool (synthetic diamond) or is it natural, like from a ring **FYI** I'm unfamiliar with whole diamond tools, they could use natural diamonds I just assumed they would be synthetic. I just remember seeing a video about a specialty high accuracy cnc machines that used them, it was quite interesting I guess they were used for lens production where tolerance is much higher then regular cnc
