Would love to see the garden in this video now 6yrs later. Should be near fully recognized on what worked or didn't work. Did this dwarf smoke bush grow to 10' tall?

Yes, this type of plant will grow to that height, we shared a photo on Facebook back in the fall, it was quite impressive.

Laura, can we get an update on what your smokebush looks like now? I have one too and it definitely has not grown in a compact way like the tag said it would. It has grown crazy and leggy like a regular smokebush with arms around 8 feet high at this point in the summer. I was expecting it to just become a larger version of what I got in the pot. Have I done wrong by pruning it this spring or is this just the way it is?

We have a large one 6’, unfortunately my husband is deathly allergic to this tree, so it is being removed tomorrow. It was already established in our yard when we moved in.

This was planted fairly recently, so not much of a change. The first year most of a plant's growth is in the roots, building up a good system before taking on additional growth. We will try to post one soon on FB, perhaps this fall. Thanks for watching!

I bought these a couple of years ago after watching it here but these are turning green in summer and quite leggy. Not the look I had imagined. I am in Dallas,Texas area and it does get crazy hot here so i wonder if it's just the heat or am i doing something wrong with the plant care.

Question: I purchased 3 of these last year. I have watched a number of videos. I am trying to determine if I can trim my smoke bush in the spring? Laura from Garden Answer said the flowers bloom on new wood but other videos have said it blooms on old wood. What is correct bloom on old or new wood?

I added this PW smoketree to my garden last fall. It was about the same size & shape of yours, Laura. It came up beautifully this spring. Then all of a sudden 3 branches bolted to about 6’ tall while the others remained a great shape. What should we do when this happens?

I read several comments about the smoke bush beiing poisonous to humans like poison ivy. Is this true or not? It looks beautiful but was hesitant to buy it , because of those comments I read. Anyone can answer this question....

Yes, our Dark Knight lobularia is beautiful in containers, the gorgeous color will cascade down all summer long. This plant loves the sun and is also heat tolerant as well. Enjoy!

My Winecraft has not bloomed! It is June 15, 2020. I just planted it late fall and when I got it it had no roots hardly at all. I planted it anyway and hoped it would survive. It did and it is now about 10” high with deep plum leaves but I don’t see any blooms. It is in a nice pot south facing close to our house. What could be wrong or is it just to small yet?

Your plant is on the right track! Winecraft Black blooms on new wood in summertime, so it should start developing noticeable buds soon. As the plant is still quite small, you may only get one or two blooms this year. The plant will spend a lot of its energy its first full year in the ground developing a good root system, after this establishing period you’ll see a noticeable uptick in above ground growth and bloom count.

Pruning is very rarely required with this plant, if you need to just trim a little to shape it do that in early spring.

Hi…I have this plant but noticed your website now list it as 8-10 ft tall. Should I relocate as the space was to accommodate 6ft. If I keep and cut back to control size, that’s sacrificing the smoke, right?

We have found that in some gardens the plant does reach 8-10 feet in height. We cannot say what this plant will do in your landscape but it would be safest to relocate the plant, and now is a great time to do this. Be sure to keep it well-watered until the ground freezes in your area. If you have other questions let us know, and yes, to control size by trimming would mean the smoke would not be as apparent.

Deer warning. I bought this shrub and set the pot in the garden to plant the next day. In the morning all those big red leaves had been eaten by the deer! We're pretty sure it was deer.

Oh no! That was quick. A good spray of Plantskydd will keep deer away from plants, spray at the sign of any new growth.

James, it is hard to understand your question. We do have a plant called Hydrangea Charm. But if you are in a zone 3, and a plant is zoned 5-8 this means that the plant will not survive winter where you live.
