👩🏽‍💻 I'm Dr. Becky Smethurst, an astrophysicist at the University of Oxford (Christ Church). I love making videos about science with an unnatural level of enthusiasm. I like to focus on how we know things, not just what we know. And especially, the things we still don't know. If you've ever wondered about something in space and couldn't find an answer online - you can ask me! My day job is to do research into how supermassive black holes can affect the galaxies that they live in. In particular, I look at whether the energy output from the disk of material orbiting around a growing supermassive black hole can stop a galaxy from forming stars.

Thanks Dr Becky for helping to clarify this discovery. Unfortunately a lot of online media uses "click bait" where they take key words that will jump out at you making you want to read the news story. Often because of the add revenue. Unfortunately, the science is lost in the process. But I'm thankful we have someone who can provide us with scientific explanation.

I loved the book too! I have a lot of friends who don’t believe mainstream science, and I wish they would listen because the book showed the prices of discovery and how difficult it can be to get a new idea accepted. Now that I have listened to it a few times I life to fall asleep to it. Initially, the words are something I can wrap my mind around and it’s a great way to get my mind off of stressful things by thinking about the massive universe and our progress in understanding it. Once I start drifting to sleep it is too sciency to keep up with so it just becomes nice white noise.

I wish people would respond to such questions with how far they would be and the unlikelihood of traveling that distance, maybe ever. For example our fastest space vehicle reached about 300,000 miles per hour or so. At that speed I think it would take about 2000 years to travel a light year! So 24,000 years to get to this planet. Most of that voyage is in interstellar space where solar energy is not available and temperatures are near absolute zero. Even with hundreds of generations of astronauts and batteries that don't have to be recharged for thousands of years and packing thousands of years of food and water... Then there's the inevitable "we don't know how much faster we can travel in the future, cave men couldn't guess we'd go anywhere near as fast as we do now." It's an appealing argument until you imagine what happens if you collide with one spec of dust at a fraction of the speed of light. And recall the same arguments applying to predicting travel speeds on Earth back in the 1960s - here we are 50 years later and airlines fly at the same speeds as they did then because the speed of sound is the barrier. Exotic planes and missiles travel many times faster, but within one order of magnitude. Detecting transmissions from intelligent life is probably realistic, hence Seti, but visiting or being visited by living beings is a fanciful idea imo once you take distance into consideration. (I'm sure an expert could make that case more accurately and authoritatively than I could off the top of my head.)

2:24 "But, we've never found a rocky Earth-like exoplanet with a magnetic field, orbiting another star, yet." This is an exercise in statistics. There is plenty of similarity in a handful of grains of beach sand, but the exoplanets are all vividly different from each other, even though they are all products of the same galaxy. Why are we looking for life? We are going to find something vividly different. This galaxy is big enough to produce nothing but exceptions to any rule we dream up. A rant is a technical discussion with a little passion thrown in for good measure. Thanks, needed that!

That's an interesting thought. I've wondered about it in relation to my own scientific field. The thing about astronomy is that AI has been making "observations" for decades, in fact, but "generative AI" is the big difference now. It's rare to deploy AI controlled systems to make measurements in acoustics, but it is done. I'm doubtful that generative AI will be able to analyse data with any of the same ability as humans, because they're just language models, so don't have the power of synthesis and a true creativity, et cetera. So while AI will make measurements and process data (according to parameters we set, anyway), it will remain strictly a (fairly useless) tool when it comes to analysis and synthesis, and humans will play _the_ critical role. Humans probably have more powerful pattern recognition abilities, anyway, which is a pretty mind-blowing thing to consider.

Yeah I also remember one Journal article talking about some of the potential magnetohydrodynamic consequences of that proximity on magnetic activity according to MHD/plasma simulations, namely the planets are so close in where they are within the Alfven sphere where direct magnetic reconnection events are possible. The major implication that brings is that if such a close in planet has a magnetic field coronal loops(prominences)could directly reconnect with the planets magnetosphere in effect drawing the loop of plasma to the planets magnetic pole directly, in effect rather than the CME starting from the Stellar surface it would originate from the planet's surface searing away any planetary atmosphere in a burst of high energy radiation and high temperature plasma. Homing coronal death loops in essence That is frankly a far more terrifying scenario which doesn't get talked about nearly enough, while the black body radiation at that distance is what would give you the conditions for liquid water its also a very different magnetic environment which may result in wildly different consequences

As a retired RF engineer I can only add this; 1. We should be listening at the frequencies that we use. We use them because we can make them work with our technology. Other civilizations will have the same problems and likely solve them in the same way. AM, FM, street lights of sodium, gas lasers, hydrogen masers would all be good candidates. 2. Because we use these frequencies it is VERY hard to not pollute the measurements with local sources. 3. We do not yet have an RF detection system free of local pollution. Maybe one on the far side of the moon someday.

Ok. Why is the assumption, that any form of life, even on the Earth, has to be Carbon based and/or needs what we are currently calling 'habitable zones'? We can't breathe in water, and most fish can't survive on land. We have found bacteria in chemical and nuclear waste, so why are we being so adamant, about the building blocks of all life, being Universally 'the same'? Love you Becky x

There's good reason to look for life being Carbon based. This is mostly down to complexity carbon molecules can form, and bond strength. That said... I agree with you in our ideas of "life" are too narrow and ambiguous.
@bradley2498
@bradley2498 Жыл бұрын
I totally get that is obviously much easier to look for things we are already very familiar with, but we are all taught that 'this planet and that moon aren't in habitable zones' etc.

@@bradley2498 What life as we know it needs is a solvent. Water is one, so we're biased. But since nobody can or has ever defined "life", it's a bit silly to assume other forms out of existence. We may need to open the aperture on that search.

Thanks for pulling us all back to reality with this video! I'm also liking the "Trash Pandas" mug from which you're sipping that Scotch...I have the baseball. Destin seems a pretty good guy...but I'd think that of any rocket scientist who would use his powers to create a Mach 1.5 baseball pitch!
