Under China's current social structure, it is difficult for people from the lower class to enter the upper class of society. For most children from the lower class, going to college is the most important way to change their destiny. China's college entrance exam system, on the surface, uses test scores to determine whether or not a student qualifies for college. However, this seemingly fair system is fraught with uncertainty for the less powerful, especially children from rural areas, due to corruption in admissions and impersonation by the privileged class.
Chen ChunXiu , a woman from a farming family in Shandong, China, took the college entrance exam 16 years ago, but did not receive a letter of admission from any school. After making inquiries, she learned that her admission letter, which belonged to her 16 years ago, had been sent to another student in the same county, whose test scores were so low that she had no chance of going to university.
Another case is Gou Jing, she received a letter from her homeroom teacher, Mr. Qiu , who told her that his daughter had replaced her at the university in Beijing in 1997.
Gou's story has triggered a storm of public opinion on the Chinese Internet. In June, the Beijing News, a well-known Chinese media outlet, published an investigative report confirming Gou's story. In July, relevant government authorities in Shandong Province released the results of their investigation. The investigation claimed that Gou Jing's two college entrance exam results were both at the level of a junior college. The homeroom teacher's daughter went to a technical secondary school in Beijing on Gou Jing's behalf, not the famous Chinese university as rumored.
The report claimed that 15 people had been dealt with "according to the rules and regulations," with the vast majority receiving "warnings" as punishment.
As a result, Gou is in an even greater predicament. On the Chinese Internet, all kinds of vicious attacks and curses were directed at her, claiming that she had exaggerated her own tragedy, fooling the public, and even calling for legal punishment of Gou Jing. There is hardly any article or discussion questioning whether the official investigation result is true. Many articles are praising the government for correcting mistakes when they find them.
"When an ordinary individual challenges the system, I already have a premonition of my own petty fate." Gou Jing wrote at the end of her Weibo post on July 5, "Those who are awake don't need to be called on, those who sleep don't wake up."

The crappy part is they can even end up being your boss one day, doing the same crap at their job, taking credit for your work and when they do mess up (and they always do) have no fear they'll get fired because of those connections. It's a pretty bad system though. Stupid people who can memorize get into universities, while smart people who are good at abstract thinking, but a bit worse at memorization get into worse places. Of course you need to be able to memorize some stuff to a certain degree, but at the end of the day it won't bring any advancement. You'll only be able to fulfill a task, which was chosen by others. The stuff which actually leads to the advancement is the abstract thinking. There are still a handful of graduates who are _actually_ smart though.

'cause, honestly, anyone who saw the video should have gathered that instead feudalism always comes back 'cause humans come with irrational greed, being only primates after all, maybe creating new social hierarchies, but still based on *who you are*, whom you're connected with in the social hierarchies, presenting itself as corruption and nepotism that defy both efficiency on a systemic level, and of course the mocked notion of meritocracy, whether said economy is pretending to be capitalistic or socialist is entirely irrelevant for the purpose of a healthy society that rewards actual hard work and talent. Also, fyi, in the pure theory of capitalism inheritances are a no-no, because, like you pointed out, that's feudal distribution of wealth, based on *who* you are, not what you can contribute to the satisfaction of any social need. ...or why are we watching these videos?

Similar stuff happened in the US, where parents 'paid' to get their kids in (eventually the parents ended 'in'... the big-house). Presumably other kids at the bottom end were bumped off. The tragedy in China is the most deserving students are bumped off (and the offenders get off lightly).

Do you have anything concrete to back that assertion up? That just because the imperial system was different that it was necessarily unfair? Under the imperial system there are many cases of poor students who studied for the exams and passed with honors, who rose to the highest positions possible. That the law, which was old, well established and known by all, was not enforced fairly for the most part? You should know that, even when central administration was breaking down towards the end of the late 1800's due to court intrigue and corruption, European legal experts were amazed at how well the bureaucratic and legal system retained its integrity away from the center despite that. That the system was so resilient as to be able to resist the central breakdown, and still carry on regardless, and to the observers secure a great deal of legal justice to ALL. When historians talk about the chaos of China towards the end of the imperial period, they are referring to the political center. Not until the very end did society finally collapse with the utter absence of any centralized government.

i had depression when i was in high school. i developed friendship with one of my teachers because of that. unlike many other teachers she taught us stuffs outside curriculum, like how to be a proper human being etc. i admired her so much and appreciated how much she cared about our mental health. anyways, we seemed to get too close. due to my depression i also started to self-harm (mostly for attention). she advised me to suspend school and come back the next year. i fully trusted her so i did as she advised. immediately after i suspended school she deleted me on her contact list and refused to connect with me. the next year i tried to come back to school and the school administrators told me i was no longer their student and that i could not go there anymore. it was not how we originally agreed upon.... turned out the school felt like i was a shame for them, they wanted to get rid of me. they didnt want me because i had depression and i was too dramatic. my lifes completely fucked up bc of their deceptive approach to get rid of me. i was a straight A student and could have gone to a good university, had a good job, lived a good life. now im fucked up. helpless. cuz i only have a high school diploma. the school name is 花都区秀全中学 :) im so freaking angry watching this video and thinking about my past.

I’d like to share a similar story from my country, just like in China, the university entrance exam in Vietnam is one high stakes exam that can literally determines one’s life. 2-3 years ago there was a hugh scandal involving local officials and many people of high social status in a small province, Ha Nam. These officials took advantage of their status and relations to illegally increase their children’s test scores who partaked in the exam in that same year, or as we called it “bought the scores”. A national investigation was conducted and there turned out to be a wide network of high class people who bought the scores for their children using their money and relationships, making you think how many times they’ve done this being suspected, people only suspected when it was a poor and small province like Ha Nam all of a sudden had examiee with highest scores in the whole country and surprised everyone. Thinking that some stupid rich lazy little brats who would go brag about how hard they studied to “earn themselves” a slot in the most prestigious schools in the whole country when in reality they stole it from someone, just makes my blood boil. I did get accepted to the school that I want, but think about all other peers who got their opportunities stolen from them, and thought to themselves that they were not good enough and all the hard works eventually didn’t pay off, seriously to a 17 year old kid, that’s depressing and heartbreaking af.

I can attest for the existence of similar cases, having personally known other stories. Like the video says, it takes years of sacrifice and hard work to get good grades from these entrance exams. Once you get admitted to post-secondary institutions, the colleges and universities there have pretty laid back curriculum and it would be easy to graduate and earn a degree. People whisper about such things at dinner tables. The girl I am aware of was top of her school. When it happened, her family can just shake heads and swallow it. Her family is not even poor but middle class... Ironically the communist revolution started as revolt against bureaucracy and support of the working class, especially farmers.

my mother was the number one student in her school in China. Her ability to get out and go to a great university is what allowed her to come to America where I live an incredible life, compared to what my parents grew up in, filled with privileges. I am brought to tears thinking about how that could have been stolen from her in one moment of corruption, and how that could have F-ed over her entire family, the generation above and below her. it's heartbreaking.

are not communism about economic ideology that advocates for a classless society in which all property and wealth are communally-owned, instead of by individuals, need money ??? or connection ??? isn't it harder to get past the vicious circle

China is not communist. They are authoritarian capitalist. Aka they embrace the free market, but the government has immense control over what businesses can and cannot do. Nepotism and cheating are more so products of Chinese culture which has been around for thousands of years, so not something so easy to change.

@@m.fajarkurniawan643 I guess you can put it that way yeah. As with everything else there's a lot of nuance and history, and I'm certainly no expert on the topic. Just that authoritarian/democratic are separate from socialist/capitalist, the first is how the government is run and the second is how the economy is run.

Jeez, in America you can just save up and start a business venture or real estate. If our country was an employee focused economy we would be a dust bin

I am sorry for Gou Jing and I hope she is doing better now... If she has an online store, would gladly support if possible. She tried to persevere despite the setback and yet she was disbelieved. What benefit does she gain by calling out this injustice from years past? Practically nothing! And yet she is disbelieved. Her last quote was heartbreaking.

My observation - regardless of Nation , human nature is same , strangely this happen allover different government system weather USA , china or any other nations the sad reality is people who is at disadvantage Don't even know they were marginalized and even after years they do realize they are helpless :(

But in capitalistic countries, this is at least attenuated a bit by the minimum freedom each individuals are allowed to have. Peasant farmers can form independent trading companies or survive off their own produces, or maybe even make it big if they're lucky. In communistic countries like China the governing party will record and demand the resource in the name of socialism.

@@straypaper plz don't divert the topic to clash of ideology . What's I am referring above is a just my own thought/observation that human habit as an population doesn't changes . Like in above video it's about college entrance exam fraud in china and same is happend in USA as SAT scandal which you might to aware of , likewise in every political system or Nation there is fraud .

This is one time when I wish those unrealistic novels about reincarnation and revenge truly happens. The govt is not doing anything and the hardworking citizens are suffering. This is truly heartbreaking, especially because college entrance exams of China is very very very competitive and students work their ass of for it. I can’t believe how shameless some people are. Taking benefit of others hard work so easily. Fking disgusting.
