I was on a 2-week student exchange to the IoM in the early 90s. I was 15, I had had English in school for 3 years, and never been to an English speaking country before. After the 2 weeks were over, that was still true. I couldn't have understood less if they'd been speaking to me in Navajo.

Very funny! Much of the dialect is shared with that of many parts of northern and northwestern England. As a frequent visitor to the IOM, I can assure you that this is a Manx accent; just a little more pronounced. I take this as a stereotypical study of the Manx dialect, which is by no means a bad thing. Just the same as when Harry Enfield satirised scousers. Also, not every Manxie hates the queen - the place was awash with Union flags at the time of the queens jubilee celebrations. Many may have been flown by come-overs, but not all. And if they were, it is good that they were accepted by the indigenous population and the owners of the flags not frogmarched to Tynwald for a bollocking. Sadly there are some uneducated folk out there who think the triskelion is a swastika. We have a stained glass Manx triskelion in our window and have often had stones chucked at it. However, quocunque jeceris stabit!

I was born in Liverpool and have lived in kipper land. I don't think the manx sound Liverpudlian at all and I can tell the difference between the two a mile off. So much so I once bought a train ticket from cressington train station in Liverpool and I asked the guy where abouts in the isle of man he was from. He couldn't believe that someone off the island recognised his manx accent.

Same comment was made by Vanessa Feltz, and I'm still amazed by the thinking process behind it. What do you expect from an island on the extreme north-west of Europe ? A thriving population of Chinese, Australian Aborigines and Andamanese who've spontaneously arisen from the seaweed ? FYI more than 40% of the population is born outside the island, and if anyone is under threat on the island, it's the diminishing Manx, who descend from an ancient Norse-Celtic culture that's fast disappearing.

Oh, and the "R" word, or "rat" is not offensive. It is a sea myth that got out of hand and doesn't really have much place on dry land. It was once considered bad luck to have rats aboard your fishing boat. It's just one of those things adopted to grasp some identity. How people (normally come/stop-overs) recoil at the mention of the "R" word is comical. I suppose it makes them feel more Manx, so they're doing no harm. Just makes me giggle. Crack on!
