The Germans actually did have control of a Hydroelectric plant in Norway that could make heavy water. They had lots of it stored in the basement. The allies found out and actually were able to destroy it thus further hampering the efforts of the Germans.

Along with a years production of D2O that was sunk in a fjord in Norway. Recent exploration of the wreck site confirmed the story as well as the D20 being transported. The documentary is available on KZfaq

@jasonstinson1767 yup. I can't remember if they actually destroyed the Power plant or just the D20.

@@mattt233 British trained saboteurs damaged the plant and destroyed most of the D2O. The Germans tried to remove the remaining D2O when USAAF and RAF bombers attacked the power plant supplying electricity to the Norsk Hydro plant, so the Germans removed the remaining D2O for safe storage in Germany. Hence, the commando operation focussed on sinking the ferry carrying the barrels of D20. The 1965 movie The Heroes of Telemark dramatised the events leading the sinking of the ferry.

I was waiting patiently for this, I went in with absolutely no spoilers or outside opinions and I was absolutely glued to the screen from the first frame to the end of the credits. As someone who is just genuinely passionate about nuclear physics it was just a completely unreal experience. When the film ended people around me kinda giggled at the last phrase and got up immediately, I couldn't help but just sit there in amazement for a bit. I was partially joking when I said to my wife that they could have just started it over and I'd have sat for 3 more hours and watched it again, but I honestly could have. Easily my favorite movie of all time, and it's not even close.

4:51 they were in the film! They were just shown very quickly early on as one of Oppenheimer's nightmares/imaginings like all the cool particle/fireball shots

Great film. I’m usually not good at sitting in theatres for this long, but it was thoroughly engaging and well paced. Time flew by. I enjoyed the constant noise and bustle present leading up to the trinity test, and then the long pause of silence after it went off. It really added to the intensity of the moment. Hope we can see the director’s cut some day. Looking forward to your in-depth breakdown.

"How his wife felt about his husbands affairs" That's a doozy! Haha. I loved the film, and to see sweets & popcorn being launched into the air the moment the blast hit made it even more memorable.

From what I understand IMAX does not have any seat shakers, but rather they turn up the sound and bass.

It is a stunning piece of film making, a movie that people will talk about for years. I’ve seen it 2.5 times, the cinema electric power cut on the third screening. Once it hits blu ray in a few months, some enterprising editor will recut it onto a chronological order. Always good to hear your thoughts Charlie. 👍

Saw the movie last week (Friday of last week of this posting). The first movie I'd seen in the theater after 2020 and all that, and I am just blown away by it! So well made, so well presented, beautifully crafted, such a human story of a very human, very flawed, but also very brilliant man. The Trinity Test scene is easily in my top ten best presented moments on film. The dramatic pause where everything goes quiet except for Oppenheimer's tense breathing and the now famous quote from the Bhagavad Gita going through his mind just had me on the edge of my seat. Then... WHAM! The sound of the blast catching up with everyone knocked me up against the back of my seat. WOW!!! I kind of want to see it again before it leaves the theaters, and maybe with my dad. We're at opposite opinions regarding the U.S. dropping the atomic bombs on Japan (i've been dead set against it since I was a teenager, he regards it as a necessary evil), so it will be interesting to see how he reacts to it.

Thank you for your review. I've seen it twice, the first time on a premium large format screen, and then on one of the two largest IMAX 70mm screens in the country. It was definitely worth seeing on 70mm. I plan on buying the movie when it is available.

Great movie! Would be interested if you guys would discuss their handling of the nuclear material in your longer breakdown. If i remember right there was a scene or two of them handling the stuff without any ppe. Was that safe or did they all get a side effects later in life from exposure.

Worst love story of the modern era!! LOL! I wish they focused more on the technology of the bomb and the challenges they needed to overcome, but it was called, Oppenheimer, not The Bomb.

Hollywood tends to draw out the audio of explosions making the sound last much longer than the sharp bang of the shock wave. Video of the PEPCON explosion and fertilizer plant explosions prove it's just one sharp report unless multiple explosions are happening in a short period of time.

It would interesting to hear your comments on the 1983 documentary - “Dark Circle.” It includes historical scenes from the 40’s and 50’s, but what would be useful is to know if current safety standards have improved since the 1980’s, and if medical consequences of plutonium have been changed or if processes are less dangerous than decades ago. Thanks.

Sir can you please do a breakdown video on KT Yield of the scene from Terminator 2 Judgment Day when Los Angeles is destroyed by a thermonuclear explosion. Nuclear physicists wrote James Cameron and thanked him for the most accurate representation of a nuclear weapon on-screen.

Thanks for all the nuke info. Intradasting. Not the topic of the video, but I was just curious if you've read "The Sum of All Fears" by Clancy. Alot of technical nuclear bomb stuff in it, was wondering if its accurate or just word salad to sound like it.

There might have been a seat-shaker under me? No wonder the sound was so deep my stomach tickled. Weird feeling one usually gets on a rollercoaster. I don't agree "immersive" should equal "bone-rattling loud."

Honestly I was kinda disappointed in the movie. I'm not a fan of nonlinear style movies and I thought 3 hours was too long for what they actually talked about. I really wanted to like it because I'm a huge fan of atomic history. My cat is literally named Oppenheimer. I wish they had focused more on the science and the bombs, although I know it was supposed to be about Oppenheimer. Part of the reason I found it kind of disappointing was because I was already aware of all of the history behind it *aside from his personal life stuff* like having affairs, so that was disappointing to me. I guess it was good for updating my perspective on Oppenheimer, but now I'm a little sad. The scene that bothered me the most, I don't know if it is historically accurate or not, but the sex scene where the mistress pulls the Bhagavad Gita off the shelf and asks him to read a random ass line from it and that line happened to be his famous quote, almost felt insulting. 😒 If it happened that way in reality, whatever, but it kind of felt like they took creative license with that and I was not a fan. Of all the times to introduce that quote and the ways they could have done that, I was very much annoyed. I'm gonna be even more disappointed if I find evidence that THAT is how he came to internalize that quote. Petty, I know. I just was weirdly bothered by that. 😂 I think the casting was amazing and that had it been shown in a linear format, I would have enjoyed it more. Also more emphasis on the science and the bombs themselves, but I get that it's a biopic. Probably didn't help that I was tired when I went to see it. I'm going to give it another chance when it can be streamed when I'm less tired. I may have just been too cranky to fully appreciate it.

I personally did not like this film, as I found that the characters were not well developed, characters motivations were pretty shallow or cliche (i.e. the emotion and writing didn't feel natural, it seemed like forced emotion to me and the characters didn't speak like real people). I also found and that it was basically a movie for gen-Z in how much it was trying to grab your attention every three seconds. As to the character motivations, they just were not well developed, I wasn't expecting it to make me respect Oppenheimer less, but it did. In fact, the crazy thing is, throughout my watching, I felt more respect for Teller than I did Oppenheimer, despite his smaller screen presence. I guess the way Oppenheimer was portrayed made me feel as if he were arrogant and self-righteous, which I can't imagine he was in real life, as one surely wouldn't have gotten to such a position of respect if one were. That's just my personal reaction. The week after seeing Oppenheimer, I watched Blackberry, and in my opinion, despite not having the famous 'names' in it, it was a far superior film, in my opinion, and I would highly recommend it - it was naturally written, and the characters were well fleshed out and actually had some sort of arc!
