I've been watching this channel for nearly 4 years now, and his puzzles were always there, maybe even before CTC started daily uploads, let alone consistently doing novel variant puzzles (vs requested classics, which this channel was built on before the pandemic). He is certainly one of the greats.

That was something I really appreciated too. I believe it's called cycling sometimes. Probably a result of doing math like that in horizontals and the nature of sudoku will produce that. Math and patterns are more connected than most acknowledge.

After the green and purple colouring is applied at 40:28 it is possible to tell that green is odd, as if green were even there would be no space for an even on the remaining line in box 1. Granted I most likely wouldn't have gotten that far if I had been attempting this puzzle myself!

Same feeling. I may not have gotten off the ground. But at 29 minutes this was apparent. That line is an odd length, so the ends are the same.

25:13 Feel like Simon was close to a little more progress here and missed it by only looking at even steps along the diagonal being the same parity count - you can do the same trick with odd steps along the diagonal having opposite parity counts, so the three odds and one even in row 3 become three evens and one odd along those same diagonals in rows 4 and 6, which in both cases tells you the parity of the remaining cell in their row, and in the latter case also lets you parity color three more cells since the cell that gets colored is also on its own line...

Happy birthday, Aad! In honor of the 79th birthday, I intentionally took 79 minutes to solve. Definitely intentional... Beautiful setting and logic. I did need Simon to tell me that parity was probably going to be important, but after that it was a clean solve and the whole thing fell apart with very little resistance, only needing the gray lines to distinguish a single even digit. (Fairly big spoilers for the finished grid ahead) I didn't even notice the cycling pattern in the rows until reading another comment, which just added another layer of beauty once I saw it. Absolutely lovely puzzle, and I hope you can continue to set them as long as your heart desires Edit: I'm so upset at myself for seeing Simon's solve time for Fillomenon and thinking "yeah that's a good way to spend my evening." But hey, I beat him by 99 minutes. That's right, only took me 271 minutes to complete that beast. This is what I get for not being able to say no to a challenge like that

Simon was wondering about if parity was helpful, but he could have taken parity even further. Look at row 2 and column 2. If Pink is odd, then both row 2 and column 2 meet their quora for odds. This breaks box 1 which needs one more odd digit. You can then continue parity shading the rest of the puzzle. That would have given the same result that 7 in box 9 is in the top row (but 2 different cells).

Very interesting that you take a different route to the odd-even coloring. I looked at 2 adjacent columns/rows, and the 2-length line segments on those always have 1 odd and 1 even, so you are usually left with 6 cells that need 4 odds and 2 evens, and you can slowly fill them in.

Aad is one of the last good puzzle makes that don't resort to a large ruleset for hardness. Which is something I sorely miss.

This puzzle toke my logic for a ride to say the least. Took me a while to think of odd/even parity, even though one of my favorites since I started doing these recently, was the sun/moon parity puzzle a few weeks ago. That said, the 7 in box seven can be placed right at the start after 9s. if c2r7 is 7, that doesn't work, because there will be two 5s in c4. Column two already having 4 odds (r2=135, r4=9, r5=35, r8=7), there can only be one last odd in the column, which was fairly easy to find with the diagonal lines ruling stuff out, and the solve was quick. Now getting there took me way too long, thinking foolishness such as since 1 have to go next to an 8 on a line, 8 has to go next to 1 (before even thinking about parity) -,-

38:55 I didn't find a row/column with 4 evens, bur a column with 5 odds, but that's basically the same. The 7s in box2, need a 2 in (R2-3)C5, and a 5 in (R3-4)C4 (because there is already a 7 elsewhere in C4) Then hypothecating if R7C2 can be a 7: 7 would go with 2 in R6C3, and 2 goes with 7 or 5, in (R5)C4 but 7 is already in box5 (R6C4), and 6 is already in C4 (R3-4) > R7C2 can't be 7, R8C2 must be 7, giving us the 5th odd in C2 Then we're cooking with gas. 44:19 my way was different, but it was about the 7s and 2s too, (as well as 5s) then 47:16 yes "that's huge!" and we're cooking with gas 🙂 ❤👍

The 7 in box 4 can be placed as soon as the 9s are done, but it's always fun to see Simon solve the hard way.

@@RichSmith77 whoops I thought the grey line would have to go 7-2-7 but it could be 7-2-5 there, so I can't rule it out.

At the 30 minute mark, if r2c6 is odd, then r1c7 is even, which forces r1c2 and r6c2 to be odd, giving 6 odds in the column

That's very neat. I guess an alternative way to see the same thing, once Simon had coloured the diagonals green and purple (40:30), would be to see that if greens were even (blue) and purples were odd (orange) then r1c2 would see four evens and five odds, so have no value. This makes it a little easier to make progress with the 7s then, which felt a little "bifurcatory" Simon's way (which was similar to my way, only I hadn't done any parity work at the start). Nice.

24:54 So close to picking the right rows... Both row 4 and 6 can be used to resolve more parities by using the opposite parity count

Oh Simon....Always going the long way around....At 21:00 when he realized the parity of the digit in R9C4, you could've gotten that with the same logic you used in box 1. But I have to say, it's really interesting seeing the logic from your perspective as well :)

I'm screaming. It's like, you're doing exactly what your supposed to be doing, but then you keep abandoning right on the cusp of riches. Looking two rows down instead of one row down. Look one row up, but then not one row down...
