Thanks for your kind words. Yea the invaders, after the dust of invasion settled, started to adopt the culture and politics. After some generations, they saw themselves as Iranians. Basically, this used to happen after accepting Nowruz (a nature-oriented new year), Humanistic and poetic-oriented messages of Zarathustra and Sufism, and a proto-secular and proto-humanistic Shahanshahi system. Respecting and accepting these three elements served Iran as a citizenship test for newcomers. And because these are not ideology-oriented, they happened to create a very efficient citizenship test for any healthy mind and heart. 🙂 Salute to Poland, too!

I'm Iranian and I don't think that's what it translates to. it translates to land of the aryans
@Yazdegerdiranyar
@Yazdegerdiranyar 11 ай бұрын
@@NemoTheAngryFish It actually translates to “the land of Aryans." Aryan is the adjective for Ar, and -an is the plural-maker suffix in the Persian language. Iran (Ar-an) literally means "Aryans." The full name was IranShar meaning the "land of Ars (Aryans)." In early and late middle Persian (Parthian and Sassanid Pahlavi), the word Ar meant "a person with a free soul" or a "freeman" for an easier word. So after this long description, "Iran" would mean "the land of free people." What this gentleman said was a correct English translation 🤭🎈

As Iranian, I really impressed. This is one of the most accurate videos on KZfaq about brief history of Iran. I hope one day, we will not hated and miserable anymore. P.S#1: Please don't call Iran, Persia. If you call Iran, Persia, It's like call Whole UK, England. Persia refers to Persians, but there is a lot of other tribes beside Persians in Iran; like Azaris, Kurds, Lores, Balochis, Mazanis, gilaks,etc. in other hand Iran includes all tribes that were born, live, fight, build and die together for this land. P.S#2: Now I find out that our culture is too strong to die and I didn't know that.

You are right in pointing that out, but that works only from an Iranian perspective, not from a worldwide perspective. Your analogy does not work. Persia is simply an old term for Iran in English, see for example 'Persian rug'. This comes from the dictionary: Persia [pur-zhuh, -shuh] Former official name (until 1935) of Iran. They formally changed it into Iran, probably because as you say, it's more ethnically correct. An English speaker however, not knowing the history, hearing the world Persia would think of Iran. My point is, calling Iran Persia in English sounds old-fashioned but it does not exclude the tribes you mentioned. With your analogy, England would be incorrect too, because it comes from Angle Land, but the tribes who invaded the land were the Angles, the Saxons and Jutes. In fact some people still use the adjective Anglo Saxon. The term England predominated though. This is to say that sometimes the main 'tribe' gets the name of whole land. Seen from an English perspective and I think worldwide (as it's the same in French, Spanish and Italian) Persia was an old term for the whole Iran and that's it. There are a bunch of other countries that took their name from the main tribe. It can sound unfair to you, but do not worry because no English speaker would think of Persia as a smaller area, they would just think of Iran. On the other hand, very few people would think of England as Great Britain, because the name England never reached the meaning of 'UK'. I hope you understand the difference. Think of Spain, according to your logic it would be incorrect as there are Basques, Catalonians, Galicians and more, but still the whole country got the name from the main tribe. It's unfair, but it's just a name and it'll take time for people to eliminate the word Persia and call it only Iran. Like Myanmar is still called by some people Burma. It takes time. But don't worry, it's just an old term and it's not discriminatory as very few English speakers are aware that Persians were just a part of Iran.

Persian history, civilization, culture, customs and traditions have been one of the richest and most beautiful empires of all time. The first kingdom of the world was Cyrus the Great. A prophet who embodied all the purity and goodness of his time. But he did not force or enslave any people. Liberation of the Jews. Reconciling nations. Due to the enmity and perhaps jealousy of European historians and unfortunately the destruction of history books due to the invasion of Alexander and then the Arab invasion and then the Mongol invasion, historical information about Iran is much less than information about Greece or Rome. The impact that the Iranians had on the evolution of human society, whether through inventions and discoveries and having the greatest scientists and physicians, is a great blessing to humanity. I hope that the services of Iranians to the world will be paid more and better. And know that the Islamic Republic is not the representative of the pure land of our ancestors.

Thank you for making this informative and optimistic video about my motherland--which is often so grossly misrepresented. I long for a modern director to make a film about ancient Iran--capturing the magic that I am sure it once was...

Great video, one small issue, at 2:32, it was not Darius that declared himself the son of Cambyses, but, a bog, a priest called Bardia, also known as Smérdis or Bardia the liar, claimed to be the successor of Cambyses and his brother, unofficially claiming to be a son of Cyrus his self, but the problem was that according to some rumors back in the time, Cambyses had already killed his brother before marching through Egypt which has never been publicized. it was clear that there was something wrong but not many people noticed it. now everything started when this new self-proclaimed king, Bardia, married all Cambyses' wives - and to dispel doubt, I have to say that Bardia never went out of the Royal Court or even talk to any Persian and Median royalty - which caught the attention of a Persian nobility called Otanes / Hutan who had his daughter Fedima married to Cambyses and now, to Bardia, who wasn't allowed to get out of the court was contacted by a mediator and asked by the father that if he was the real son of Cyrus or not, and makes her responsible for gathering information from the court and guess what, he was not. so a council was made of a few royalties to discuss this matter, whom later Darius the Great, the son of Vishtasp, a satrap during both Cyrus and his successor Cambyses was a member of; and soon, rebelled against the lier king.

Surprisingly accurate. A few corrections/additions though: - The pre-Iranic history of Iran is much more interesting than simply the Elamite. Look for example at The Jiroft Civilization, The Burnt City Civilization, The Kassites, etc. - Linguistic analysis of the Gathas suggests that Zoroaster was probably leaving around 1500-2000 BCE and not 1000 BCE. - Medes and Persians never were subjugated by Assyrians. Medes were defeated by them at some point but never subjugated. Later on a combined Median and Babylonian army laid a two years siege to Nineva and put an end to the New Assyrian Empire. - The Mongol emissary killed was not directly sent by Genghis Khan, but by a vassal state in Northern china that was related to Genghis Khan. - Safavids were Turkic people and although there were great promoters of Persian culture and language but they were of Turkic origin and initially even began promoting a Turkic unity with the Ottomans but later on changed their plans when they got into power. They were also the ones who established Shi'ism and created the first class of Shi'ite Mullahs so in a sense all of our current problems could be traced back to the Safavids. - Reza Pahlavi was not harsh by any standards of the political zeitgeist of the 70s and 80s. There were European countries at that time that were committing significantly more atrocious crimes than him. He was in fact quite weak and acquiescent and that was one of the reasons he eventually ended up handing the country to the revolutionaries. The current Islamic regime commits more crime in a span of a week than he committed in his whole 39 year reign. Just ask anyone from Iran, Iraq and Syria and they will tell you. All and all. This was a very accurate summary of Iranian history.

Thank you for this video. It's a very helpful overview. One quibble: at 8:29 and 9:04 you list "Reza Shah" and "Reza Pahlavi" respectively. This is confusing, because besides having "Reza" in their name, both were Shahs (kings) of the house of Pahlavi. So if you put "Shah" or "Pahlavi" on the slide for either one of them, it seems like it should go on both. The difference was that the father's name was "Reza" and the son's was "Mohamed-Reza." Sort of like John Adams and John Quincy Adams.
