Inspire Woodcraft one thing I like about it is that, since it has no slot runner, if the edge gets buggered over time by the blade, it can be trimmed a bit to make a brand new straight edge.

I just made one and for my knob I just cut a small circle from wood and a tee nut to tighten onto hex head bolt. I found that even when completely tightened down the board with the toggle bolts still easily moves. Any suggestions?

@@kathywinn6869 Perhaps put some adhesive sandpaper to the bottom of the fence board, so when tightened down, it will really grab to the plywood base.

I just made one. I wonder if putting adhesive sandpaper on the underside of the toggle board would add extra grip so it can't rotate. Another idea wou be to route additional grooves parallel to the one so you could set stop blocks.

Amazing. This is by far the best one yet. I was struggling to joint two pieces of wood today. Spent nearly all afternoon watching videos on how to joint without a jointer and this is by far the easiest one to build. Thank you so much for this. Also, the link no longer available but I can still make this.

thanks for the plan and the design. Used it to make a smaller one for my Dewalt Compact Jobsite saw. That saw has a max fence distance of 500mm (20 USA inches) and fits well into my tiny compact shop. My version is 400mm x 600mm. Not great for cutting full sized legs over a metre long, but for smaller stuff it seems to work well. Used it and I might rebuild the base making it a little longer maybe 800mm or even 900mm., I'd probably wait until I need to taper something that long or want to use it as a jointer.

Awesome idea! You could add a strip of track to run inside the table saw track, and remove the fence. You could also make another, taller, clamping bracket for cutting larger stock, like 2 1/2" thick, table legs!
@InspireWoodcraft
@InspireWoodcraft 5 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! I forgot to mention that in the video. The only reason I didn't use a track is because it would lock me at the one max width. By using the fence I can cut really wide pieces if necessary. Thanks for adding these!
@chrissewell1608
@chrissewell1608 5 жыл бұрын
@@InspireWoodcraft My pleasure! If needed (probably not?) You could add a small strip of sand paper (w/ spray adhesive) to the blade side of the sled, just to keep your wood held in place, rock solid, once locked down.

Yeah the only reason I didn't use a runner is so that I could cut wider stuff if I need to. Using a runner would have locked me into a narrower max width. If your saw is dialed in right, 16" should be 16" regardless. At least that's me theory! Thanks for watching. Let me know if you make one.

Thanks for watching! You know, I tried it with one clamp in the center, near the adjustment knob, but I would have had to make the fence wider, which I didn't like. I think it would work though if you don't mind the wider fence. Let me know how it turns out if you try it.

My first time I found it difficult to get the top clamped hard enough on the bottom to keep it from spinning. Some sandpaper adhesed to the top facing down into the bottom would alleviate this, at least I think so. I used shorter dimensions for my first attempt and didn't like it so I'll make another longer one with sandpaper.

That way I wouldn't have to be so dependent on holding it against the fence. Just a thought........
@InspireWoodcraft
@InspireWoodcraft 5 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks! I contemplated using a runner for the base, but then I would only be able to use it at a predetermined width, so opted to leave it off. This way I can cut really wide stuff if necessary. It would definitely make it a little more user friendly though.
@mark2talk2u
@mark2talk2u Жыл бұрын
Definitely think about using the miter slot. It is the miter slot that should be in-line with the blade. Also, if you have a cutoff-catcher piece on the LHS, the crosscut sled would be even more useful. With the miter slot, the width is almost unlimited as long as you can move the fence out of the way.
@InspireWoodcraft
@InspireWoodcraft Жыл бұрын
@mark2talk2u Just to clarify: the blade, miter slots AND fence should all be parallel to each other. (The one exception is that it is acceptable for the fence to be a few thousandths farther away from the blade on the exit side. Since I'm using this sled in a ripping motion, using the fence is perfectly acceptable here as well.) Using the miter slot means that I am limited to the width of the sled, because I would be stuck in the miter slot. That's why I made it this way. Actually I still use it to this day and it always works great!

One inch is definitely doable and you might be able to squeeze 1-1/8. If you remove the bottom nut on the clamp you could add another 1/4". Also, for those that want to run tapered legs, the clamps can just be put on riser blocks. Thanks for asking.

If you put two slots in the base plate and a slot at 90 degrees in the fence piece you could run two bolts to hold the fence piece in place for extra hold-in-placeness.

@@InspireWoodcraft I was thinking of times when you wanted to make a bunch of parts the same, having a single pivot point you would be at risk of your fence rotating and messing things up unless you checked each piece individually. Still a great jig.
@InspireWoodcraft
@InspireWoodcraft 5 жыл бұрын
Good point. I thought about that as well. But honestly the one knob holds surprisingly well. On the test one that I made I had waxed it to see what differences it would make and it was too slippery. Sanding kept it movable enough without making it unreliable so that seamed to be a good middle ground. Another thought that crossed my mind is to use a 3/8" bolt for a little extra holding power. Thanks for the feedback!

@MrBonners
@MrBonners 4 жыл бұрын
I'ev been buzzing around YT viewing other designs. This is different somewhat from the common designs and has capability. With a large-ish platform would a runner have any greater advantages/disadvantages/not worth the effort? Most woodworkers set up the jig so as the point of the taper cuts first. This method with very hardwoods, because one blade edge contacts first the wood may slightly deflect your blade at the start of the point end, chip-out the point. Others set up or the blunt end to be first, (as you did for test) a disadvantage I can see is the blunt end method, the weight of the waste as it cuts away at the end may break away before the cut completes. So take into consideration the characteristics of your material for non-wood sheet goods. Make yourself another toggle clap block of double thickness for thicker stock. Feedback please.

A bit late to the party, but ..... 1) Some people are having problems with the toggle board moving ... how about gluing a small strip of sandpaper to either end of the board, meaning that when the centre nut is clamped there is now a spring force on the toggle board helping it grip the base board. 2) You run the base board against the saw fence, meaning you need to set the saw fence every single time you use this jig ... I'd suggest it'd be better to have the base board engage with the saw mitre slot, meaning you don't need to faff about each time setting the fence. Anyway, very simple and effective jig, thanks for the inspiration ... I'll be making one very soon.

"cut it perpendicular to the cut path". If you make a perpendicular mortise on the sled, an inserted square piece would do nicely to maintain a hassle free, perfect as possible, square edge fence.

Nice! Question though, do the toggle clamps create stress at the point where the moveable fence is attached to the base? That hold down knob looks pretty small, do you think it's going to become a problem? Keep up the great work.

Thanks! I don't see it becoming a problem but I do think you could make it a little beefier by going 3/8 instead of 1/4 if you wanted to. The toggle clamps do create stress and lift the fence up slightly, but that's also kind of what makes the whole thing work.

@@InspireWoodcraft Thanks for replying. I'll be making some jigs for my new table saw, I like this design, so I might copy it pretty closely. I might film it for my channel, If that's ok. I'll definitely link to this video and do a shout-out.

Could you take the top piece and use on router with thinner small base piece?

Crosscut sleds are often made from half inch. Given that this isn't much different it might be fine

Hey Andy! The last time we did a sticker swap, we ended up paying crazy amounts for shipping to Canada. Send us an email and we'll work something out! Inspirewoodcraft@gmail.com
