In November 1959, Liverpool manager Phil Taylor resigned with the Reds in mid-table in the second division. He was replaced by Bill Shankly, who within five years had gotten Liverpool promoted and won the First Division, seeing them crowned champions of England for the first time since 1947.
In this video, the first part of a new series, we examine how he did it and who helped him along the way.

It's a shame there isn't footage of the early days. I'm a relative of legendary Liverpool goalkeeper Elisha Scott . Great video by the way.

Reading "Red or Dead' the fictionalised account of his time at Liverpool. Shankly was a genuine football genius. I feel like his retirement eventually killed him. Thee Liverpool legend.

That's obvious isn't it? Duh! From 1900 - 1959 we only got 5 League titles and 4 Division 2 titles From Shankly in 1960 till Klopp 2015, all the managers have won sumthin, even the retired Daglish won a League Cup and FA Cup runners up, except for Hodgson and Rodgers. Let that sink in for a moment son

Jim Furnell may have been surplus to requirements as a goalkeeper at Liverpool but he was a great keeper, playing for Arsenal, Rotherham and Plymouth (where I used to watch him) until 1976. He is now 84 years old and is still remembered as Plymouth's greatest goalkeeper.

One of those if only's of history. Furnell was good, just bad luck with the finger gave Tommy his chance. I remember Jim going to Arsenal, then being replaced by Jimmy Rimmer, who then got replaced by Bob Wilson. Rimmer ended up with a championship and European cup winners medal at Villa (though was injured early in the final and replaced by a young Nigel Spink).

@@caeserromero3013 I supported Argyle after moving from Manchester so I remember Jimmy Rimmer as a top keeper, hardly ever used at United for many years because of Alex Stepney

Fantastic video series. Can you do one on Valeriy Lobanovskyi and his Dynamo Kiev side, USSR national team and influence on the sport. Just recently found out about him and he was quite the manager.
@HoldingMidfield
@HoldingMidfield Жыл бұрын
I do plan on doing one eventually on Lobanovskyi because I find him one of the most interesting coaches in history, but probably not for a while. Because his tenure lasted so long, it's a bit difficult to plot out how to cover it as there's so many different iterations so it will take some time to plan out and structure

In the context of Shankly's early period at Liverpool, this is very good yet some of the film archive (rare and unseen) is out of context with some of the narrative ... overall good however it needs better editing.

I'm a football man who's been going to the football for almost 50 years now however I must confess that I'm not a fan, but more importantly, I despise the LFC fanbase. Modern day Liverpool fans are so fickle and arrogant. Tbh I could say exactly the same about other clubs especially Villa, Arsenal and The Scum from Bellend Road. "Most" LFC fans have no "real" understanding of their history and how important Shanks was to them. They rave about Paisley, Dalglish and Gerrard when none of them can hold a candle to the great man Bill Shankly. Without Shanks, Paisley would never have been as successful and Dalglish wouldn't have had the career he did at Liverpool. Same could easily be said for Gerrard. Shanks had the personality , grit, character and brains to move mountains and motivate men. None of the other 3 had those skills in such abundance! Then there's this political nonsense which is spouted by Liverpool fans nowadays. It's football, not politics. Tbf Glasgow Celtic are going down the same road and it's very sad. I know many Celtic fans who hate where their club and it's fanbase are headed. Someone needs to grasp the nettle @ Anfield before too much damage is done. They have very quickly become THE most hated club in England, boo-ing the National Anthem and worse boo-ing the minutes silence which was reduced to just over 25 seconds, when Queen Elisabeth died! How can a club who RIGHTLY expects silence to remember the 97 Hillsborough Victims, not show the same respect back? If Shanks was around today I can assure you it would not be tolerated!
