Tony and Walker each recorded some music on the original Shared System from the Shared System Record Series in 2012-13, and also recorded some music on a modern Black & Gold Shared System Plus. After listening to each other's recordings they sat down to have a conversation about the whole experience.

I love the long form. I imagine it’s logistically challenging, but I would love to see the two of you patch on a SS-together. Or apart. Long form patch videos-no principle, no lesson, just a periodic patching check in. Thank you for all you do.

That is kinda like the "Office Hours" that we used to do in quarantine! We keep meaning to bring something like it back, but we don't have as much extra time to fill these days. Definitely we will try!!

I am much like Walker analyzing the sounds/gestures/controls of a patch when I hear it (even my own). I love the sound of pulling the plug on a clock going into Echophon and letting it sputter out of control (but sometimes I listen to my first recordings and think "oh that trick again...")

Some conversation had to be cut for time, in which Tony discussed the importance of the listening environment and taking time to devote attention to listening. He is indeed a great music listener!

I really enjoy this conversation! With regards to always sounding like yourself, over time you develop tastes and prefrences that lead you to make somewhat related choices in sounds and texture so no matter what instrument you use... it sounds like your decisions. I think that its really cool that even with electronic music and modular synthesizers people can still develop their own individual voice.

Both albums are phenomenal, and I find it fascinating how much more can be done in parallel on the black and gold vs the original shared system. Shows how much the system has evolved over the years. In “The chance to jump off” halfway through the track there is a super gritty noise source used for a snare. The shared system doesn’t have a typical “noise source” so I was wondering how that sound was created?
@MAKEN0ISEMUSIC

Tony writes: "That sound was made by pinging the Erbe Verb with a gate from either René or TEMPI (can't recall where the gate came from exactly). I didn't use the Erbe Verb for traditional reverb on that track, only for sound FX. T"

I have watched this video about three times now and it kept me wondering why there's no 'difference' sonically between a 2012 and B&G patch. A few days later I think I figured out why that is. I always say that your main VCO dominates the case and you can't make a DPO sound like 'not a DPO'. A lot has changed since 2012, but both systems have DPO as the main VCO and both original designs are mono. The substantial difference is in the utilities but it doesn't make the DPO sound any different, not even layered with Morphagene or Erbe-Verbed. However, the XPO marked a huge change in sound, as well as the stereo modules. So I guess there's a logical reason why the unexpected listener doesn't hear a difference. I am 100% convinced the XPO/STO demo Shared System will lead to totally new sonic territory when you compare it with the B&G.

Thanks for the video. Entertaining and informative as always. I’m thinking of a variation on the B/G SS+, wanting to incorporate the QPAS. The Morphagene is a must. René is a must. But thoughts on what you’d remove? Perhaps lose Pressure Points? Not sure… Thoughts?

Will have to see if I can recreate it from sound and memory! Pretty sure the kick is DPO final (see the “STO kick drum” video Tony made for the basic concept) and the other “drums” are modulated Erbe-Verb. -W

@@MAKEN0ISEMUSIC No safety net. Similar to how most Blue Note sessions were recorded. No overdubs, all the dynamics were from each artists’ performance, just live to tape, etc.

Walker - this was a fantastic and conversation and I really appreciated the links. I happened to have had Tony's tape delivered just before this video dropped. Wish yours was on cassette too - but that's the tapehead talking. Is there any chance you would do a patch technique video that breaks down some of the concepts in your tracks - or Tony's? At 17:14 you're both talking about Morphogene magic - would bee curious to see how that's done - likewise with your Morphagene technique you guys hit on at 28:20 - just beautiful sounds... Thank you for all the work on these videos.

I am curious to know if Tony uses a high end tape machine for mastering his cassettes he sells or can this be done on any reasonably decent tape machine like a separate hifi deck or a 40 year old Tape to tape Ferguson stereomaster hifi like I have ?

that's funny. i just recently showed a new track of mine, that i think of as radical departure from anything i've done before (trying out numerous new synthesis techniques, now 95% modular instead of 100% software and using scales derived from indian classical music instead of your typical western scales) to a friend and the response was "after the first second i immediately knew it was a new track from you. you have a very distinctive style". on one hand it's reassuring, but on the other it's mildly infuriating that what feels like a radical departure always seems to end up as a small evolutionary step.
