Landfills are where garbage that cannot or are not being recycled end up and they are expensive to maintain and environmentally undesireable. Johhny Poore is the executive director of Solid Waste Authority in rural Barnesville, Ga., and he is testing technology that transforms garbage into usable gas and environmentally benign and reusable by-products that bypass the landfill.
In 2001, Johnny led Georgia’s first landfill reclamation project, which successfully freed up capacity and transformed once contaminated groundwater into water that met U.S. EPA drinking water standards. The project received a Georgia Trend 2009 Excellence in Government Award from the Association of County Commissioners of Georgia.
Johnny holds a bachelor’s degree in industrial management from the Georgia Institute of Technology and is a recipient of the Keep America Beautiful Georgia Man of the Year Award. Johnny Poore wants to make landfills obsolete.

Has a concept been implemented? Truth of product? Where do the (alleged) non-greenhouse gasses go (there are definitely gasses) This was 3 years ago...

This gentleman is discussing an ideal scenario. The viability of this process will entirely depend on what was disposed in the landfill being considered for reclamation. I am a retired hazardous waste chemist; and I must say that prior to the 1976 Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), there were no regulations on what could be placed in a landfill. In truth, it really wasn't until the Hazardous and Solid Waste Amendment Act (HSWA) of 1984, that the USEPA became very judiciously serious on the subject. If your cell was strictly used by household generators of waste - you're golden. However, if it was also utilized by industrial and commercial generators that discarded hazardous substances; be extremely careful, as it could cost a bundle of money to have it properly managed. "Pie in the Sky" speeches are wonderful, but universal reality is often quite different.

Pretty sure that baking the waste at 1000° requires an intense amount of energy. This isn't a balanced energy situation, more a solution to landfill that also gives energy.

Because this dude never named the technology he was talking about (seems like a pretty basic requirement for any serious discussion) based on what I've looked at he seems to be talking about pyrolysis. A recent study has shown that pyrolysis is not sustainable, in fact the energy required to do what he is talking about is more than what is produced, thus it actually creates more pollution. Basically it's impossible because it would violate the laws of thermodynamics. Always be skeptical of and TEDtalk person. They've had some extremely questionable and even scam pros on to talk... basically it's a hypefest with little substance.
