Katie is so incredibly empathetic, and her presence is so calming and nice. Her videos has been more helpful for me then some therapy sessions. She's made mental health education so accessable for so many.

Having the right therapist is soooo important. You really have to have a "click". I walked a way from a therapist that actually made my issues worse... Then I found one that "spoke my language" and he really helped me.

I do a similar thing for my finances/budget! I write down everything I bought that month and then highlight the things I REGRET buying. For me, it's always take-out food because I didn't take the time to prepare my meal the night before type-of-thing. When you have a total number of money essentially wasted, it really is an eye opener.

Best advice a therapist gave us early on (married 30+ yrs) is to have a weekly business meeting with a time limit. We go over our calendars, our spending/budget, things/processes we need to work on (this can be tricky, but we have worked to figure this out), and wrap up with what we appreciate about the other person.

So true. My husband and I try and find the balance between alone time and together time. Plus we both have different things that we like to do and we try and do those things together and then realize it’s a “You do you boo” moment. In other words you go enjoy doing that thing and I’ll be over here doing my thing. When we were newly weds we had a fight and afterwards admitted to being relieved we had fought because it meant we were past the honeymoon phase and didn’t want to just please each other but wanted to communicate about how we felt fully and honestly.

Absolutely love the thing about keeping emotional/mental health and financials separate. Good financial health needs to be separate from the emotional triggers, but it's SO NATURAL to allow our emotions to affect our finances.

Yes! I am so happy this discussion on the intersection of mental illness and finances exists! My bulimia was extremely expensive! Beyond causing damage to my physical health which I later had to fix with costly medical visits, it left me with debt, a tendency for impulsive spending and a sense of arrested development due to my financial instability. I didn’t feel like an adult until very recently because I was so ashamed of my money troubles. Now that I am in recovery, I’ve taken big steps into becoming financially stable again but it’s taken lots of hard work and pain that could have been avoided. Thank you for doing this ❤️

Wow thank you for talking about sleeping alone. I am a dancer and sleep is vital to my recovery and I feel kind of bad that for recovery’s sake I prefer to sleep alone undisturbed. As much as I love the pre sleep cuddles, tossing and turning because of another human being isn’t the best. I like the once a week idea!

Research therapists in your area to find ones that you feel comfortable with. Contact them and ask if they offer a sliding scale because a lot of therapists will offer that. There may also be free group therapy sessions in your area where you could get some help with what you need to work through.

I went through similar feelings anxiety, especially after being rejected admission to a short therapy at my university (it was my first time being vulnerable like that. It hurt). What helped me, was to do some autotherapy first (lots of youtube videos, meditation, blogs and books). When I got a little better, I got strength to find a new therapist. I still waited some weeks, and I contacted her when I had a good productive day. And I did it fast after having the idea, before my anxious thoughts could take over. So I suggest that to you, but also if you can, maybe you can find a friend or a sibling who could search someone for you. You can try to identify if some of your friends go to therapy, they are the ones that would understand you. Also, maybe you can try finding a therapist online, that might be less stressful for you (and you can find cheap online therapy platforms! One I've heard of is called Better Help. Also, check out online therapist from other countries that speak your language. They might be cheaper as well). Also, just do one meeting, realize there's no commitment necessary from your side. And try to find out what exactly in this situation makes you so anxious. Is it being vulnerable? Is it worrying what others will think of you? Are you worried that the therapist will not help, but when you're not reaching out, you can still have hope for help? Are you maybe not ready to face all your problems and you think that the therapist will insist on digging deep into pain? Are you afraid of being judged by the therapist? Identifying the cause of anxiety is the most important I believe! And remember, it's ok to give yourself some months of not searching for therapy. You can wait to be more ready. Wish you the best! And be gentle to yourself:)
