The problem with Open Path that I had was they all list a million specialties and when I reach out about a specific thing they listed (for me it was dissociation and trauma) they didn't actually specialize in that thing. This was incredibly frustrating. Open Path also has a lot of new therapists and inexperienced therapists looking to get more experience, and I don't have the type of problems that can be someone's guinea pig.

The part about specialties sounds very similar to Psychology Today, unfortunately.

I am from a small city in South America, so I think most of this resources won’t work for me. I would really appreciate a video on questions to ask a therapist in your first session, or kind of how to make sure they understand what you need from them, and what to do if they don’t provide that! Or maybe what are some not so obvious red flags in therapists

I feel like I’ve been pretty lucky in finding great therapists. One thing I do once I find one that looks promising, is try to find their website and read the blurb written about them to get a feel for who they are and who they treat. And maybe read some reviews, if there are any.

I believe I used Psychology Today when I was searching my area. Discovered there was an office just down the street from my house that I previously didn't know about which I think really helped me feel like I could do it if I only had to go a couple blocks away instead of driving all the way across town or something.

I wish there was more options for people in "therapy deserts". There's so few therapists where I am that there's almost never one taking my insurance. Even when there is, I don't get to choose someone who relates to me or specializes, I choose who takes Medicaid. Because there's so little therapy around here, almost all of my counselors have moved away like 4 months after I meet them. It's just exhausting to seek help and be told no.

I've kinda given up on finding a suitable therapist. The tips people on the internet usually give me aren't really applicable in my country (Germany), because as therapy is paid for by insurance, things like sliding scale I think aren't really a thing (?), however, I'm having big trouble finding anyone who would be a fit for me who takes national insurance. There are several types of therapy which are not paid by national insurance, and from what I know online councelling isn't all that much of a thing with national insurance either (but maybe that changed?). I'm trans and neurodivergent, and I'm just tired of having to explain everything while my therapist doesn't actually have resources adapted to me. I've kinda found that when I see/hear from a therapist who seems like they might actually be helpful, they tend to be private/self-paid. I have the suspicion that this is a general thing, because those therapists have more freedom in what they can do. Also, I would very strongly prefer a therapist who identifies as non-binary themselves, and I have heard of people who had a non-binary therapist, but finding one in Germany...like, I don't think I know a single out non-binary German therapist.

This isn't as niche but I found mine through a search engine provided by my insurance provider. I first and foremost wanted a therapist that my insurance would work with reasonably easily so that was a good path for me. For anyone who does have insurance it's another option.

I gotta be honest with you I feel like I’ve completely given up on therapy, and I feel like the entire profession is a pile of crap. How many therapist does a person have to go through to find one that’s worth anything

Any resource you share is going to get slammed with requests! Prior to this video, I had only heard of the list on Psychology Today which is not an exhaustive list and I had also seen a list from an employee resource thing... and the therapists I met that were covered in my employer benefits were weird people that I wasn't going to connect with. The only way to filter was by geography. You are awesome for helping folks find what they need.

Now, talk therapy is one thing, but if I go to a therapist with a large collection of dream material, some of which is pretty far out stuff, like a birth from the knee or hermaphrodites appearing, a lay person isn't gonna understand all that, it takes training, do they really have it? Cause I'm sure plenty will say they do and take my money. Am I just wasting my time?
@Isabel-lb9fg

that sounds like you should look for a psychoanalyst, I agree that your run of the mill cbt/dbt therapist won't do dream analysis

This whole world of dreams is there and even doctored professionals seldom even give it a second glance. Why? Is it because most people are afraid of the unconscious so they end up creating a whole bunch of therapies to support that bias?

Are there any that help people who aren't in the US the help provided by the NHS in the UK is not anywhere near what it should be but I don't want to use better help which is the only one I see advertised in the UK but I've heard so many horror stories I don't want to touch it but here the only thing I can get I've had and that was 6 sessions of 45 minutes of CBT but as an autistic person it wasn't the kind of help I need

FYI Mickey, there's a resource called Pineapple Support, which offers affordable/sliding scale therapy for s*x workers! You might want to look them up and add them to your resource list? All of the therapists are well vetted, and take a s*x work is work approach to therapy.
