yes!!! my mom was a paramedic and she was called to an elderly couple at a restaurant where the woman was going into anaphylaxis and having chest pains. They didn't tell my mom what she had eaten because "she'd eaten it in the past". It was a severe shrimp allergy. she had suddenly developed a severe allergy to it and if her husband hadnt been told my mom (the wife couldn't speak obviously) then the treatment might not have been accurate and life-saving. The woman ended up surviving :)

We use it to embalm corpses and it can be considered quite unsafe but it's still edible in apples. The colloquial use of the word chemicals would apply to the jar of mortician's preservative but not to the apple.
