I was walking thru Costco.mindimg my own business when a tiny house practically jumped out and grabbed me. (slight exaggeration...🤣) It was actually a shed but I immediately saw the potential for a cheap option for a tiny home that a solo senior nomad could put up quickly on a piece of land. It was certainly bigger inside than a minivan conversion and could fit just about anywhere. It beat camping in a tent by a mile!! The best part is it was on sale for only $799. My mind immediately started imagining a DIY project and where everything from the bed to the miniature kitchen and toilet could go. What do you think? Have I lost it or could this be a home for someone, at least temporarily. Let me know in the comments what you think and any design ideas you might have

At 799, I'd get two. Put one facing the other with a 6-10 foot gap between. I'd build a common room in that space to connect the two. I'd use the common space for the kitchen/sitting area, one shed for the bedroom and one shed for the bath and laundry area. Take out the metal vents and fill that space with a patterned glass. You'd definitely need to spray foam for comfort.

My late husband had dementia with Sundowners. We were staying at my brothers then, but dementia nighttime disturbances were causing a problem. So I got an 8x10 shed, insulated & paneled, installed AC furniture TV & coffee corner, we slept & hung out together very comfortably in “Colin’s Cabana”. And no more family sleep problems. 👍🏻❤️

My dad bricked up the fireplace in the sweet 1938 Cape Cod he & mom bought in '75. He installed a three foot cast iron wood burning workhorse of a stove. Then he partnered w a small tree cutting family business after his shifts on the LIRR. Each summer, he'd build a small clubhouse for me out of branches, using thicker ones for the frame and overlay it with plastic then intertwine greener branches (like a little hut). He sloped the roof like a lean-to but it has four sides. He lined the bottom w heavy duty trash bag split open then covered it with a piece of outdoor rug. Each one was about 4x4. I'm 4'11" so I've always been "vertically challenged" but the size was perfect for me to have my little tea parties and read my Nancy Drew mysteries by flashlight. He let me have a lantern flashlight that took one of the huge square batteries and it lit it right up. He built them for me from 2nd through 6 the grade. That was the last year because there was an invasion of Gypsy moth caterpillars that found the perfect breeding ground in my little moist dark hut! It was a wrap for me after that! I'm 54 now & I simply love remembering the fun...before they came!🤣🥰

Great idea for older senior women to live close to family like in their backyard you still have your space and there's no danger if you get sick family is close by if there's a bad storm family is close by, it's very dangerous out in the streets for older single women to risk their lives living in a van driving around trying to find a safe spot to park overnight.

Several cities are using very similar size sheds as tiny houses to help combat homelessness. They're just big enough to put in a twin size bed and some shelves. Making an A/C inlet wouldn't be too hard. Solar on the roof and even small RV sized windows on either of the side walls to let in natural light - So do-able! Why more communities aren't doing this is mind blowing.

Add a window, remove the outside handles (wouldn't want some prankster locking you in), add some warm paneling inside with a daybed or a futon, a small rug, a vase of flowers, and some small scale landscaping outside. OMG!!! Carol you have just solved my dilemma! I own a sticks and bricks but it needs alot of work. But Im too old and physically challenged to work anymore and on a fixed retirement income I have nothing to use to fix it up. So I have been devouring van life videos thinking I might move into my vehicle and rent out the house, use the rent to do some repairs (for about a year), then move back in! But because I am physically challenged I wasn’t sure I could maneuver around in a vehicle. But THIS???!!! I can do this!! It is even more room than the vans I have seen!! I can park in my own backyard, have a window unit AC/heater installed (Texas heat!) and run electricity and water to it!! Literally exactly what I need!!! Another issue I was having living in a vehicle was crazy stormy weather but bc I would be in the back yard of my own home, I would make it a thing for the renters to let me inside in tornado warnings! Bada bing bada boom! Add those magnetic screen “doors” for nice weather ventilation. Thank you SO much! OK, update!! I went to Wayfair Clearance page and am I reading it wrong? I’m a “window person”; I would HAVE to have (screened) windows, even if they’re small!! It would also need some sort of foundation because of moisture being trapped underneath; treated lumber (like on a deck), enclosed around the bottom, with several vents. Also, stronger doors with more secure locks inside and out. It’s cheap enough to “make it Yours”!! [How about a “village” in an area where restrictions aren’t so bad, if there is such a place?!!].

We all really need to push this because none of these authority figures have any answers for the impossible circumstances for many people in these times That we’re living in right now.

My FIL built his LMH (lawn mower home🤣) by hand when they relocated to GA from NY in '93. Family members helped him get it up (like a barn raising 😊). It's about 10x10. My MIL made curtains for the window. It's survived 2 hurricanes and decades of 100° by 10am summer weather and freeze snaps as well. He decorates it to look like a gingerbread house during the holidays. All he'd need to do is insulate...and move the lawnmower out and voila! Tiny home!

I know it's virtually impossible for many if not most today, but that's why my generation and most before us were adamant about buying property FIRST thing. We got married at the court house for a few bucks and spent our $ on the downpayment for a house. I was also taught that the worst thing that you could do was to enter retirement carrying any sort of debt. Supposedly the average couple nowadays spends around $15K on a wedding. To me that's just insane, bc I know where I'd be otherwise. Debt is slavery.

Great idea. I love the idea but I would get two and have a closed in walk through connect the two. I would have insulation, windows, heating system, flooring, water and electrical outlets. I would want a small kitchenette with apartment size appliances, stackable washer/dryer and bathroom with walk in shower. If the roof is not strong enough to handle the weather long term, I would look into having support added. Sounds great but it needs to be structurally strong to do this. But…..great idea.❤

Carol I have the 7-ft X 4-ft version that I converted into my shower shed on my property. first thing I do with that bigger one is I put in a bed about a little over halfway up so I can have a living room underneath it and a bed on top put in a small kitchen, have a hideaway toilet/shower, stashed under a shelf/counter. there's tons of things you can do. the biggest problem is building codes they're a joke you can't do anything these days without the building code enforcers coming and tearing down whatever you do, but yeah you could live in that. you can also live in a little 6 * 12 cargo trailer and pull it with a pickup. We are nomads we know how to live tiny❤❤

Has has alot of potential. I wouldn't worry about more windows. It's really mostly a sleeping space. I would have fabric with murals on curtain rods from floor to ceiling to add depth and dimension. There needs to be some cross ventilation. I do fine with a comfortable sleeping surface and a recliner. I find a arm chair side table that doubles as a desk adequate. I wouldn't plumb it. I use bottled water. Same as in my van. I have a 12volt refrigerator and large bluetti power station with back up battery. This tiny home could be perfect for a landing zone between lan dwelling excursions 🏠

We have an 8x10 "cabin" with a porch in our backyard. It was a playhouse for our grandkids. I actually got the cabin from my friend who used it for her kids to play in. She now travels a lot and doesn't have a home right now. We are in our mid-to-late 60s. Have been thinking when the time comes, maybe fixing it up in the future for her if she needs a place to be longer term. We'll see what the future holds.

I drive by sheds at a business on my way to work and every time I say to myself they could most certainly be homes! They’re really cute! And it’s just my opinion, but we could definitely be housing the homeless utilizing sheds. I really like the shed you found. It could be designed to be a shed studio or a lounge. I’d do an area rug, a trundle sofa, a dresser that acts as a tv stand, battery operated lighting, and put up vinyl walls.

I would totally live there! Looking I was thinking how to improve it: could u cut out a window on at least 1 wall? spray paint light color to make it look bigger? lift it up and put on bed so it could be pulled? I like the light the barn door allows and it's cosmetic... could you secure a door to the inside that was secure and glass to allow light? I say reach out to some of these KZfaq guys who rehab vans/trucks and get ideas. Have sofa/bed attached to the wall for sitting, sleeping, storing. Attach portable outdoor shower situation. That area that's not sealed at the back/top could be cut out to make a nice transome window along that whole side at the top. It could be quite beautiful. I would just like to see it safe too.

Now reading the comments I see how many have found comfort in a shed--I think it’s the plastic factor that gave me pause in the elements. Of course heating & cooling are possible just as in a van. I think I would reinforce corners & ceiling & floor with heavy steel L-brackets against the wind (which I did in a smaller shed I have) it seems if you invest in upgrading it you wouldn’t want to lose anything in a windstorm
