The stories were just so good people kept them alive. It also fleshed out cryptic and confusing lines or references in the Old Testament that needed explanation. A "war in Heaven" is alluded to but never fully described. There were other popular stories about Jesus as child and all sorts of things that never made it in.

I absolutely love the Yōkai from japanese folklore. Strange apparitions - which is the literal translation of the word Yōkai - that haunt people in all sorts of weird ways. Like the akaname (aka filth lickers), who slurp up dirty bath water. Or the Tōfu-kozō, children serrving you tofu that groes moldy while you eat it. Or myy favorite, the Ashiarai yashiki, which is a giant foot covered in dirt and blood that randomly shows up in your house demanding to be washed in a booming voice.

Hey! Just wanted to let you know that the "Burney Relief" at 9:54 which you show while talking about Lilith is actually *probably* a portrayal of the goddess Inanna/Ishtar or possibly the goddess Ereshkigal. The several horned crown, and the rod and rings she is holding are symbols of a powerful goddess of high status and would never have been used to portray an evil demon in Mesopotamia.

Lovely video! Here’s one thing about Dagon though, (or Dagan, as he was called by the phoenicians): he actually wasn’t (probably) depicted as a merman. This is a case of folk etymology from the Middle Ages, that tries to explain a mysterious passage of the Bible: it is the same incident you mentioned about the Ark of the covenant, when "Dagon had fallen face downward on the ground before the Ark of the Lord, and the head of Dagon and both his hands were lying cut off upon the threshold; _only Dagon was left on him_ ". Many have tried to explain this last _Dagon_ as his fish part, since in ancient Hebrew "dag" means fish. This theory was encouraged by archeological findings in the Near East, depicting merman gods, like Ea, Enki or Oannes, however, none directly attributed to the phoenician god Dagan. The Septuagint, the ancient greek translation of the Old Testament, actually translates that passage as "ῥάχις Δαγων", Dagon’s back. The writer Philo of Byblos, who had some phoenician sources available, saw Dagan as a fertility god and understood his name as meaning "grain". Which makes some sense, since the few surviving myths of Dagan seem to be related to those of the hurrian fertility god Kumarbi.

I've heard she was the first woman as well, depicted in the first creation story, created simultaneously with Adam. She is banished from the garden for refusing to submit to Adam's will, resulting in the creation of Eve from Adam's rib. In the story I heard, she is subsequently blamed for infant deaths, miscarriages, and nocturnal emissions.

The Legion story most likely reflects the ancient belief that knowing something, or someone's, "true name" gives you power over them (like when your mum uses your full name and you know you're really in trouble this time). I am unsure if this is a universal belief or confined to the ancient Middle East, but one of the earliest appearances of this idea is in Egyptian mythology, where Isis tricks Ra into giving up his true name so she can cure his snake bite, turning allowing Isis to turn herself into a Lady God Empress of the Universe.... only with fewer space marines. Either way, it is likely that figuring out the demon's name was standard practice in Jesus' time as well.
@hysterical5408
@hysterical5408 Жыл бұрын
I'll be fair, I came to a completely different conclusion I thought it was an exaggerated form of echos. The guy possessed by Legion is a cave, when he speaks his echos in the cave sound like more than one person. Therefore, their must be more than one demon inside him. I like your interpretation better, mine kind of sucks.

Also, the Apocrypha is only considered non canonical now. Most of those books were considered canonical and very popular during their times. Wasn’t until some people decided “Hmm we should be able to determine what is good enough for the Bible and what isn’t.” which seems super like… blasphemous? If that’s the right word. I used to be Christian and that fact bothered me even then

Apocryphal texts weren't popular. But they were used to justify every sort of heresy under the sun, and that's not good, so everyone got in common accord to what should be the official compendium. "Super blasphemous" would be things like protestants taking books out of the bible just because they felt like it.

The idea of a "canon" wasn't formed back then and it's for a pretty unexpected reason. Books didn't exist back then. Most writings were in scrolls bundled up in many ways. There wasn't any real standard back then and a diocese can have a different set of scriptures compared to a diocese a few nations away. The only thing that could come close to being a standard was the Pentateuch and the Four Gospels. Most other diocese wouldn't bat too much of an eye if yours decided to carry the Book of Enoch. It was only when books were invented when the idea of a canon begin to form. The problem with books is that, unlike a bundle of scrolls where the collection was fluid in a way, a book had to be bound together permanently. Their joining was essentially permanent. So the early church leaders began to standardize what scriptures are accepted as standard for every diocese to follow.

Nice video. One correction: the name Jezebel, which in the Masoretic text appears as Izevel, was probably pronounced Izvul or Izebul in ancient Hebrew and has nothing to do with Baal. Zebul, like in the name of Zebulun, means a prince or a judge in ancient Hebrew/Phoenician.

I remember a godfather of mine (who studied Theology and Philosophy) said that it is essential to know the demon's name because its name is its weakest point. That by knowing the demon's name you have the authority upon it.

I want video of Grimoire and Soloman's demonologies, those ideas are so cool with so dense informations and it's so sad that most people don't even talk about it viewing it as taboos

This might be a weird request but could you make a video covering Yaldabaoth? I believe it's an incredibly interesting topic which, from what I know, isn't really talked about a lot

the part on Lilith makes me think a video on the biblical references of evangelion would be awesome, though it can't be forced if you're not familiar with the material.
