I had the great pleasure to visit my friend Joe's incredible property in Northern Portugal. The climate there is true Mediterranean. I believe it's zone 10A, thanks to how close his property is to the ocean. Frosts and freezes are rare, despite the fact that he is halfway up a mountain side. He has a fascinating collection of fruit trees and watering systems. He built many of the stone walls by himself. His trees grow at fantastic speeds, and fruit prolifically. Enjoy the tour!

Well you are going international now, that's great. Wonderful place to look at with all the trees and the history of the place. Hopefully he can be a springboard for avocado diversity in the area. Jan Boyce does seem to be getting more popular.

Great video and what a property! I can't believe how many varieties of avocados he has growing in North Portugal. I have just moved to a new homestead in South Spain (documenting on my YT channel) and we have established Hass avocado trees. It would be great to graft some new varieties because we are very limited in Spain. I am also always on the look out for mulberry, fig, citrus... cuttings to expand - you can never have too many!

Ok so this is new to me and just to confirm, do rootstocks change fruit flavor? i have a recent potted mango from a nursery on Turpentine rootstock. No fruit yet but i am wondering now if the Mallika mango graft would perhaps produce a tweaked fruit flavor. I am not worried, just wondering how rootstocks might affect the fruit. Unless of course it has to do with a given rootstock's enhanced ability to pull nutrients from the ground for the graft. Love your content..
@AJTheGraftMan
@AJTheGraftMan 12 күн бұрын
Thanks! Great question. The relationship between rootstock and scion is more complex than people think. It might be worth doing a video about this topic.

Hi AJ you lucky man, I have been telling close friends that Australia has turned to crap and we need to move to countries like Spain and Portugal as there house price are not in the top 20 most expensive in the world to live. Do you know how much ash your friend is using per tree. Does your friend us composed kitchen greens on the Avocadoes as mulch? as we have a bit every week.
@miett49
@miett49 18 күн бұрын
The wood ash I don't do it by measurement Just put some over the mulch and let the water slowly drive it down. Compost is good, but you should allow it decompose separately, once it turns into soil you can use it. If you have access to dehydrated manure use a little, cover it with mulch and always keep the mulch moist so the roots can absorb the benefits.

@@miett49 I do more or less the same, but with avocados which require a high airflow, So I am thinking that anything that is dense that is placed over the rootzone over years may compact or form solid surface thus reducing airflow? I have notice in my veggie garden that I have had for over a decade is in a state of decline due to a high amount of compost.
