I wish people would stop saying it keeps the taillights clean no it makes sure that when they get dirty light will still get through

If in circa 1980's you asked Porsche to conceive and build a Rolls-Royce, the Mercedes benz W126 would have been the answer! Power without the temperament, imperial but measured. Over-engineered & nothing wasted. Germanic to a fault but also elegant in ways that neither its predecessor nor successor could manage. There is nothing quite like these cars: the chunk-sound made when closing the doors tells you that the minute you step in. The smooth power, effortless mile-eating ability, super-high quality interior which feels like it was hewn out of stone and serene silence has never quite been surpassed by Mercedes ever again. These really are truly the last great Benz's: engineered to perfection with no electrics to hide 'mistakes'. They will never be engineered, designed or built like this again!

Your fancy hinge on fuel filler door also retains the filler cap whilst re fuelling the car by sliding it into the assembly.

the best S class till today. W126 from ( with facelift - 85 to 91 ) its still a amazing and beautiful car. i sold mine 560 SEL some years ago with only 50.000 kms and till today i regret. i have a W140 with 5.500 kms since 1993, but my passion is 126. enjoy you 500 every day. happy new year.

- Regarding the key, its functional and small, not filling out your pants when carrying, - The mirrors - no need for electrical on driver side since you can reach and adjust it in no time, passenger is electrical since its harder to reach - just makes sense, no use of unnecessary "luxury"

I share your love of the 420SEL. I've owned a 1990 since 2009 and have no intention to ever sell it. The gas door hinge assembly is designed to hold the gas cap when filling.

Thats not a hinge in the petrol cap it is the mount for the petrol cap when you are filling th tank

S class my alltime favorite merc. Along with W123s... Beautiful example and not even run in at 86k. I'd expect 3 bar of oil pressure at that mileage. A credit to you sir..

I just bought a 1990 420SE done 102880 kms and it’s immaculate and I love it, wanted one for years, and you are right about buying the best one you can find and that’s what I did and I paid top $$$ for it and it is worth it.

The Economy gauge will become more important as the car ages. As the car develops vacuum leaks the ECON gauge will be your first indication that the car requires attention. One nice thing about the 126 is that you can remove one of the wiper arms. I only use one on my 1990 560SEC. It works perfectly and looks cool. (But I NEVER drive the old gal in the rain). I wish that US cars had EU bumper and manual HVAC control like the EU cars. And headlamps.

Your air filter box is original from a 560 engine. Or probably an extra from the factory. Check the Data File of the car with your dealership, with the VIN.

Love the short wheelbase SE's. I own an SEL, but I think the SE's have much better proportions. I see you are missing the original, very long lug bolts. I had to buy new ones from Febi, as MB no longer makes them. They were a little shorter than the originals, but look okay. I'm afraid yours looks funny to me without them.

The bonnet ornaments are still available on the new models with the classic trim, but the classic trim is only available in the UK now on the S class, as the sport look sells better in the UK.

Excellent condition and a true keeper for sure in Midnight blue 904 with creme beige interior - same colour combo as my Euro late 1989 560SEL 300hp + full hydro version that was privately imported into Aust from the UK in 1996 by its original UK owner. Mine is AMG spec - full bodykit, 3 piece Aero wheels, full door trim wood,steering wheel,instrument cluster,shifter, engine mods,exhaust etc which really steps them up to another level. Some other famous & celebrities who owned W126's - George Harrison, Paul McCartney, Robert Plant, Stephen Stills, Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Joseph Jackson, Johnnie Carson, FLEA from RHCP, Morten Harket from A-ha, Sylvester Stallone, Alex Lifeson from RUSH, John Gotti NY mafia Boss, Hugh Heffner, Wilie Nelson, Gary Busey, Bobby Brown, Clint Eastwood, F1 champions James Hunt & Nelson Piquet, Pierce Brosnan and many more. Hello thank you very much for such an in depth review of this Timeless Classic Milestone Mercedes-Benz . I am proud to own the very same Mercedes only that mine is a 300SE witht the straight 6 cylinder engine. and for its baseline spec it got fully automatic climate control sunroof and power adjusting steering wheel. ihave own this car since 2010 and it is my daily drive as i beleive if you dont drive thesee and leave them stored away that problems arise and it can get expensive , they were a a very costly car to bui;d and therefore , are costly enough to maintain if it not genuine mercedes then it wont do as i see aftermarket parts for these don not last as good as the original parts. following on i drive mine daily and it just get better every time. if you are every selling it i would be gald to make an offer as i know the price of these and your is i believe a V8 which can be a bit pricey to maintain but i would love to here from you and we have a chat sometime. i am an avid fan of this car and its a pleasure to see great effort you made in doing this review. No air conditioning? My God, who the hell buys one of these cars without that as an option? I’ll never understand that kind of thinking. Perhaps I would have to go back in time and live in England to understand it.

Your car is absolutly new. 80 k miles is nothing for this 80's Mercedes. And you have a v8 engine, in the next century it still runs.

Hey you don't need a driver's license to drive. Queen Elizabeth drives and no one arrests her or hassles her about it.

Its very nice car, typical of mercedes charging extra for leather interior where as in the lexus ls400 everything comes as standard, plus you get a tape player and a 6 disc cd changer, I suppose mercedes charged extra for that too
