Shane was born with a neuromuscular disease called Spinal Muscular Atrophy that requires him to use an electric wheelchair. He is the author of several award-winning books, the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
Hannah is a senior at Carleton College, studying sociology and anthropology. She works as a researcher for an educational consulting firm. Her future aspirations include attending law school and owning a goat sanctuary. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog.
Shane and Hannah have been dating for over 2.5 years and living together in Minneapolis in recent months. Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. Sure, Hannah helps Shane use the bathroom and brush his teeth, but those activities do not detract from the emotional, intellectual, and physical connection they experience together.

This video is actually super helpful to me. I work for an insurance company and my main job is processing claims for durable medical equipment, such as wheelchairs. I know exactly what you mean about certain parts not being covered, or only being covered once every six months or some other arbitrary length of time. Seeing how those kinds of policies affect actual wheelchair users is really helpful to me and hopefully will be something I can address with the policy makers at my company.

Hi Shane and Hannah, I’m a 14 year old, and only recently starting watching your videos. I’m absolutely blown away by both of your stories, I really enjoy watching both of you go through your lives, (i know this may seem funny to hear lol), one thing i like the most is the sense of humour, every video i watch, even if it is serious intended, always leaves me laughing or with a giant smile on my face. Shane looks like someone who is really easy to get along with, and Hannah is really pretty :). I don’t know whether this will get read, but if so then i want you to know that your videos make me happier than any other, especially when i’m stressed or not feeling very good, but your motivation is almost as if passed on to me. Thanks guys, Nathan.

This is not my normal type of channel. And honestly i would be the type to shy a way a bit(id like to think in a non noticable way) from people with disabilities. But between Shane and some of SBSK videos, my eyes have been opened a bit. Now i wanna get to know them and treat them just like anyone else.
@kathaa-b6972
@kathaa-b6972 5 жыл бұрын
I have social anxiety, so for me any interaction with anyone I don't know very well is awkward, or I fear it will be, and I try to shy away … and if someone is disabled, I have the feeling that the interaction is even more likely to be awkward - not because of the disabled person, but because of my own insecurities and nervousness to say or do something wrong or weird. So I definitely do shy away. Which is an explanation, not an excuse, so I'm trying to be better. I think Shane's videos are helping with that as well. :)

@@721rena thank you! It feels like a spiritual morning stretch the best i can describe. Not to steer anyone from this channel, SBSK has people with some super severe conditions, and the guy who does it is eye opening in how normally he treats everyone. Here Shanes such a cool dude you literally forget the wheelchair. And i see the one person deleted their commented. Thanks for understanding though and taking this the right way. Feels good to admit, despite it being just a comment section to strangers. And being able to discuss a bit. Not something people generally feel open to do.

Lololol! The part where Hannah talks about the number of changes she has made to Shane’s “set-up”; each of which no doubt improving his state of well-being exponentially AND the fact that he met each one with “stubbornness & resistance”...and I’m over here like, “so precisely the same situation as with EVERY male/female romantic relationship since the beginning of time??!!” 🤣🤣 Shane’s disability simply provides for a highly specified manner through which Hannah is able to prioritize the needed changes!! Sounds about right!!!👍🏻 I love you two, and have been sharing your channel with a lot of my friends and coworkers, who have also been enjoying your content. Keep up the good work you guys!😘🤣💑🐭🐭

My grandfather had ms and the only way I knew him was in a wheelchair. Wheelchairs really have come a long way from when he was alive. He's been gone for 20 years now. He had ms in his 20's and they gave him a short amount of time to live but he shocked the doctors by living until he was 68. I remember when I was younger riding around on his wheelchair, I miss him terribly. Thank you for sharing your story with everyone. Medical advances have come so far in 20 years and so has technology. I know people are still uncomfortable around disabled individuals and there's no reason to be at all. I'm hoping one day for a world where there will be no stigma against the disabled, races, religions and people will just be able to live the way want to as long they are not hurting anyone. You two are adorable!

You could use a set of snow chains for those wheels in Minnesota, Haha! Surely insurance will pay for that! Car insurance that is... Shane, thanks to your assistant, Vanna, who pointed out all of your interesting accessories and bonus goodies. Wait, there's more! More towels, velcro, styrofoam, and velour just to make your chair unique. I'm surprised there are no Eagles logo or other Philly paraphernalia. Some bumper stickers might add some color and style to it, and probably hold it together while insurance figures out how they will not pay for something else! Welcome to the fun world of DME and ME! As an Australian, I was shocked by these things not being covered by medical insurance..it honestly seems healthcare/health insurance is TOUGH in parts of the USA :( a lot of people here in Australia both abled and disabled rely on government medical subsidies and cheap basic healthcare and a pharmaceutical benefit scheme so we can afford treatment, medications and ongoing health care and be able to not have to choose between food/rent or your medical needs. Good on you Hannah and Shane for DIYing where you can and reusing :)

Here we have to choose between food and medicines because co-pays are so much. And forget going to the ER if you don’t have Ins you’ll go broke and homeless. My seat also has gel in it too which is annoying but thankfully i have a new wheelchair that’s like the tesla of wheelchairs, it’s really fancy at least to me it is.
@katphyre
@katphyre 5 жыл бұрын
Mine is like his. Barebones, nothing even remotely fancy. And now it's being held together with black duct tape in a couple of places. (The counselor at the accommodations department at my daughter's college saw my chair and called their maintenence guy. Hahahahaha. Such nice people!) The worst though...it has a poltergeist and once in a while it will just stop and shift to lockout mode. I can't use the controls until I turn it off and then on and go through the mode button back to drive. It's takes about 30 seconds which isn't a lot of time if you're safely on the side of the road, but it did this in a crosswalk on a busy road one day. I've never been so afraid of dying.

Would love for you to do a follow up video on the process of getting a wheelchair replaced. Willing to bet most people would assume you could do it without getting independent insurance verification that you are indeed still disabled and they would be WRONG. I'm due for a new chair this year and I am dreading the inevitable fight to the death with my insurance company.

Shane, how often do you feel like you need to get out of your chair? Or how long is too long to be in your chair? I’m a special ed teacher and I have a couple students in wheelchairs, they’re nonverbal though and I wonder if I need to give them more breaks out of their chairs throughout the day?
@smithy2389
@smithy2389 5 жыл бұрын
Katie Hilton it depends on their age. When I was 11 I just wanted to be in my chair all day so I could move around with my friends. Physio Therapy and hydro are good excuses for getting out of the chair with productive time. That said soft play areas are good. Ideally you want to be getting them out of chair once a day for 20mins or more. Tummy crawling is good for the back.

I used to work with adults with disabilities and I would take each of them out twice. Once at the beginning of the day and then after lunch. A lot of wheelchair users like their chair and don't mind being in it but they should be taken out just like someone laying in bed at the hospital should get up for walks or should be rotated if they've been laying for a while.

I was recently showed a video of you guys by my sister and subscribed immediately. You guys are both Amazing & Hilarious. I don't have SMA but I'm a C5C6 Quadriplegic paralyzed from the chest down from a diving accident May 11th 2000 when I was 16. I have the front wheel drive Permobil C300 and can relate to a lot of your experiences. Like the foot plates as defense/food catchers, air filled tires going flat and switching to solid tires, even the pouch which I also use to carry other peoples items and so on. We may sit a little lower than everyone else but our outlook on life lets us rise above the rest. Thank you both for sharing your stories and giving others with disabilities including myself someone to admire.
