China's first power unit using the country's self-developed third-generation #Hualong-1 #technology has completed the very first phase of its commercial operation in #Fuqing, southeast China's #Fujian Province. The Hualong-1 is a Chinese Generation III pressurized water #nuclear #reactor jointly developed by the China General Nuclear #Power Group and the China National Nuclear Corporation. The third-generation technology features with both active and passive safety measures to avoid potential accidents like what happened to the 2nd-generation units of the #Fukushima power #plant. Its designer says the unit's double-layer shell can withstand a magnitude-9.0 #earthquake and even an air #crash.

Natural talent is nice, but hard work and willpower is the most important part. China just worked hard and learned/copied and improved from all the worlds best minds and scientists. No need to reinvent the wheel. In the end it is hard work and willpower and unity of 1.4 billion Chinese under CPC leadership that made China a world superpower from starting point of absolute crippling poverty in less than 70 years. That's the difference between China and India, who is still ranked 100+ on world hunger index out of 120 countries, and why China has domestic capability in everything and competing to be the worlds best while India has capability in nothing and can only beg and buy from advanced western countries and be beholden to western countries.

Yep, even the engineers in China's space program are all mainly in their 30s, including the chief designers and engineers. China's future is in good hands, and it shows the power of Chinese universities also to produce such talented scientists and engineers. Of course Chinese students also study from the worlds best overseas universities, since China has too many smart students and China's universities cannot cater to all of them. But in the end they return to China and use their knowledge to make China stronger and smarter.

The cost saving is great but u have to consider that China's Hualong one reactors can generate only 1180 MWe of electricity, compared to 1770 MWe of EPR by France. That's a big difference... I hope China can come up with another more powerful version of this reactor soon

Of the 53 nuclear plants currently under construction, China is building 15, India 8, S. Korea & Russia 4 each, Turkey 3, Bangladesh & Japan & Slovakia & Ukraine & UAE & UK & US 2 each, Argentina & Belarus & Brazil & France & Iran 1 each. The world needs to be building 80 times that, and it is completely possible.

Where most of the West is meek and susceptible to fearmongering regarding nuclear energy, China actually has the balls to take practical, long term decisions that will pay off. Remember after all that for nuclear energy to match the damage on humans and environment of coal energy, there should be at least two Chernobyl events a year. Whereas we only had 1 Chernobyl from 1955 to 2022, and some smaller disasters.

Chinese nuclear program including energy is way behind India. India is constructing indigenous nuclear power plants for several decades now while China mainly imports these including fast trains, etc. China constructed her first genuinely indigenous nuclear power plant in 2020! Russia a peaceful country in reality always helps her neighbors in most areas including energy. Recently a Russian reactor for a major Chinese nuclear power plant arrived in China. Thus China owes much to Russia in nuclear energy program, space program, etc. The drunkard Yeltsin sold to China old Russian hardware and with generous help from their Israeli friends China now has a manned space program; though in reality not too advanced!

I see a lot of vidéos about the incredible performances of China in many fields: nuclear plant here, speed trains, bridges, roads, fight against poverty, metros and buses in towns... As China is presented, it has a Gross Product around the USA one. But China has four times more citizens. How is it possible that China deos so much and western countries so few for tehir citizens. Who is stealing the wealth in these countries? Or this vidéo would be just propaganda?

China spends on its citizens while USA wastes it all on wars and weapons. China is also a socialist country and tries to make everyone richer, while only the top 1% in USA takes all of their profits every year. It is the difference between a socialist country which cares for its people vs a hyper capitalist country who values the individual more and protects rich billionaires rather than poor people. China cares more about poor working people than rich individual billionaires. That is the difference.

China plans on reprocessing plants and fast breeder reactors to further deplete the wastes. The spent fuel still has 95% of its energy within them after all.

Since when is nuclear waste better than carbon waste? Go solar, wind and geothermal. Geothermal is available everywhere, just dig a hole deep enough and tap the heat coming from Earth's core.

Or, you could dig a much, MUCH shallower hole and still bury the waste deep enough to not affect anything on the surface. A hole only 1km deep should suffice. Meanwhile, you would have to dig a hole 50 times that deep to reach the mantle, and that is 4 times deeper than any hole that has EVER been drilled.

Despite the progress in last years China still generates over 65% of its power from coal and less than 5% from nuclear plants. This fact makes e.g. electrical cars in China to produce more CO2 than cars with traditional combustion engine.

China (PRC) does NOT necessarily burn coal directly (which isn't green) at all for generating electricity coal, like oil, has many green clean fuel paths, especially, in China (PRC) you ERR by projecting inadequacies of how you IMAGINE coal (or oil) is used from where you come from to generate electricity that's not green clean at all the energy industries in the USA/West are notoriously profit-thieving based, so, none of it is ever green. USA probably can mess up hydroelectric power plant so inefficient, it's as dirty as burning coal

Better to bury the waste, i think. Don't want to poison the Sun by increasing its metallicity (though, i suppose it would take entire planets worth of waste just to increase it by 1%) Alternatively, they could use some of the waste to make Radioisotopic Thermal Generators
