As a youngster I have cut hay fields, plowed, you name it, and never did I have any near misses with that tractor. As long as one respect its capabilities and be responsible yourself, all will be okay. I only Wish I had One..I'm now 77 and still wish to climb aboard and relive the harder days. Thanks bunches for the video, Keep the gal and respect it.

I am almost 72 and grew up on an wide front JD 70 with a diesel engine. Being a kid, I had to see fast it would go! It got away from me, and I was fortunate it did not roll, going down a steep, deep ditch. I still wonder how I stayed on the drivers platform!

I've traded for old tractors and used the snot out of them. While working them I've often spent time wandering about their past. Some of them I knew some of their history , but most were sold off from an inheritance without a story. I can imagine a whole family gathering as the machine was delivered , the kids squabbling to get on first. Then 50 years later I'm working it hard and using wire or whatever is handy to keep it going until I get time to fix it correctly "if I ever do.'" Like I had an old Super C Farmall I used for years. The tires were dryrotted , no paint left. Wires held the hood on. But it ran and worked great. A fellow worker came for a visit and begged me to give him my yard art tractor. I told him to be there Saturday morning. When he got there he thought I had the tractor hauled off. Anyway I had layed a patch off to turn under for winter. I put him on it to plow. He didnt think the tractor would even run , he plowed all day with it. For weeks he told everyone about his personal plow day.

This was a trip down memory lane. My Dad had a 70 John Deere and it did a good job for us. Also from Iowa. We always had Johny Poppers! I remember he paid $1750 for it in about '72. It was around 20 years old at the time. I made a seat for it at some time. All tractors are dangerous of you are not careful. Thanks for the memories.

That tractor brings back a lot of memories. I am 64 years old now, I used to ride along with my buddy when I was around 12 or 13 years old, plowing and cutting sorghum, etc. His tractor may of been a 60 but the two look very similar. It would be nice if you were able to restore this tractor completely.

My great uncle was killed on one of these tractors by cutting on an incline. It rolled over several times and the steering wheel crushes his chest. I'm glad I found this video cause it made me think of my childhood when I would hear these tractors fire up and ride by my house going to various fields cutting and plowing

I have always found the JD 70 to be an amazing tractor. 1953 when the 70 came out to replace the G and it had available options that were amazing: Power steering, Roll-o-matic front end and the Powr-Trol for implement control.

My ffa team won Nationals 2000 tractor restoration with a Deere almost exactly like yours except ours was a diesel. Take note our tractor ran originally on a 6 volt system, so a 12v battery instantly fried the magneto and points on the pony motor and electric system. So it too would turn just not start.

never had that happen. closest i had one go up on me was when I was trying to pull start my dad on the farmall M with a TO 30 Ferguson. Old Fergie reared up into the air and I clutched it to keep from rolling clear over backwards. Also worthy to note I was only 6 or 7 years old when that happened. lol

Just came across this and I'm obviously not a JD guy but I would say this - I know you said it "has seen better days" but i would say you actually have a really nice tractor worth bringing back to full use. You have straight sheet metal and it looks like everything is there. I have seen them in a lot worse shape working just fine. You know I like the idea I read in the comments of you getting a 706 Farmall but certainly wouldn't discount this old girl. So many people talk about the "dangerous" narrow front end but I disagree. Like any piece of equipment, you have to respect what you are using and use it properly. Just like you said, the guy was lifting something way too heavy and had the tip over. That wasn't the tractor's fault and it fact I bet it was a manure fork bucket he was using as that's what was mainly on those. had it been used for picking up manure or things in the same weight range everything would have been fine. It's when people try to "get away with" using the wrong equipment for a job that they get in trouble. All it takes is to hit a hole or bump and start the load to swinging and you have a big problem. I have run narrow front tractors all my life with no problems but there are certain things I would not even attempt on one.
@JerryMiah
@JerryMiah 6 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah definitely. I've seen alot of tractors in much worse shape around here. A little TLC and this old girl could be running up to par in no time and looking brand new. And I'm hoping my uncle will sell me his 706. He got an 806 diesel about 10 years ago to replace it, but of course he still likes to use all of the tractors he has and has a hard time letting them go. But he recently got a fiat with a cab on it with front wheel assist. He's got it all fixed up so he has a heated cab to feed his cattle with in the winter and do just about everything else with a little more ease, as he's getting up in age and knees and joints are failing him. I'm hoping he'll sell it to me. Regardless, i'd like to ask him i I could do a video of his tractors. Fire up the 806 and do a video if it. He's also got a 620 JD with a bucket on it thats been sitting for 6+ years. A far-mall H that he uses to rake hay. And he's got an old WC Allis Chalmers sitting around. Lots of old toys to play with. Not to mention is 49 dodge truck, and his I believe 38 or 39 Ford Coupe he's drove since high school.

I bought an electric car that had supposedly electrocuted someone who had tried to work on it, they must have been ignorant in electrical work, I replaced the 300V battery pack, repaired the control board and sold it. Now I have an old New Holland skid steer that someone supposedly was killed on, freak accident when something fell in a side screen on him. The side screen is missing. I repaired it and use it. My grandfathers brother was killed while on a tractor, I think it was before WWII, but it was lightening that got him. The man being the highest object on those old tractors was vulnerable. Life isn't perfect, we never know when it might end.

Post the SN in the description, so we can tell you more about it. I've restored machines that were in far far worse shape than that. It is an unfortunate reality, but there have been many lives lost on these machines. No ROPS, few if any PTO shields, etc.

I applaud you for getting the old gal back on its legs. But here is a little info for you, the clutch lever has nothing to do with the flywheel. You may be a referring to the belt pulley on the right side of the tractor in front of the clutch lever, also noting that the clutch cover on the end of the belt pulley is missing, this is often indicative of a bad bearing on the belt pulley. It's rather unusual to see a 3 point hitch setup on a 70, I would say you are fortunate to have that. And as another poster noted, your PTO maybe disengaged by the lever near the right brake pedal. On the left side of the tractor, near that power-trol label, is a lockout for your hydraulic pump. It can be disengaged or engaged by rotating that two handle knob. My best wishes to you.

Good video. Hope you get it running. I ran a 70 years ago when I was 16 The tractor was 12 years old and it was not a row crop, and was diesel. I have fixed a few through the years from the transmission to engine carb etc , I even rebuilt a pup starting engineon a diesel. The 70 was a good solid tractor. I see someone changed yours to 12 volt. My neighbor is bringing one over in the spring to fix. Hope you can get the pto working. I think there are a couple of petcocks underneath to lower the compression to get it rolling faster for starting.

That tractor looks in pretty good condition. That sediment bowl gasket is available any where. You are missing the carburetor bowl, that will need an organ donor. I tipped over a John Deere 60 with a bucket once. All the way over upside down. So I had to have jumped about 16 feet to miss it landing on me. A man working for me put it over too. And I think the previous owner did also. No fatalities. By todays standards they are dangerous.

Thinking about safe operation, load movement, and moving elements is not something that should become over looked. I have a 1948 *Cockshutt with PTO shaft movement, when not fully engaged. I fitted a special sheet metal cover, just to be certain I would not get wrapped up, at clothing. Individual machine inspection, with thought for loads, work site conditions and rigging of tow, lift, is hard won expierence. Older tractors can have built in instance of crush points...and loads can fall towards operator. Modern JD *think safety.....was built on past real events.

Farming can be a very dangerous business. I grew up on the farm, operating our Oliver 66 with a front end loader. Use some common sense and the risk is manageable. Actually climbing to the top of our 60 foot silo, using the ladder on the outside, with no safety cage, was really dangerous. All the tractors I grew up with had tricycle front ends.

not sad at all , Hire a real mechanic , the other farmers will know who he is , not a parts replacer or carpenter/mechanic . What you need to start with is a carb overhaul , 80 dollars , a few gaskets and tune-up , oil change {you must} 100 dollars , that tractor properly maintained will outlast YOU !!! parts are readily available so have at it and keep it out of the weather will save you some money . I have seen far worse fixed in a few weeks and still going !

Kevin hoffman has it right. This is a cool old girl here. What you have is the biggest 2 cyl gas tractor JD made. It is essentially a ''G'' but had so many great up grades. A water pump, power steering, live hydraulics, Roll a Matic front end, 12 volt system. This is a powerful tractor. JD tractors have inline gearing, as to pull the power from the crank via gears with no power wasted using a ring and pinion. Its almost the last of the line before the inline diesels came out. There is nothing like the sound of one of these doing work. Fuel system is top priority, take the carb off and have it rebuilt. Buy a NEW sediment bowl at tractor supply. About $30 (They also have carb rebuild kits for your machine if you want to do it yourself) They stock a oil filter and oil for the 70 also. I would buy a 5 gallon bucket of 90 wt and drain all the water out of the trans....probably change the 30wt in the power troll too. There usually is a little water that forms in the bottom of the oil, trans and power troll...has to do with condensation and cast iron.. And before the water freezes and ....depending on where you live. I would add some antifreeze. Check out my site for a couple of model A rebuilds, and a link to a JD junkyard. You can score a wide front end there. and turn your 70 into a GWD. A model 70 with a wide front end. And it would take a hurricane to tip it over then. I'm totally jealous of your 70....Wish I had it...good luck.

it only runs a pony motor to start up the diesel engine you are only turning over the pony motor you could pull start it you don,t even need that glass sediment bowl in there if you pull or drift start it because that should be for the gasoline only the diesel is totally a separate system

The 70 was not made in '52 the letter series tractors were still being made. I have a book now states the year the letter series tractors stopped being made. 1952 The 70 came out in 1954 so let someone say I am wrong or call me some freaking name of some kind. The 70 was made from '54-'56

@JerryMiah
@JerryMiah 6 жыл бұрын
No no. The co worker I work with is 80 years old. He was there when the man was killed on the tractor. I found a newspaper from 1974 with an article about the accident. Another guy bought the tractor after this accident. He died. His wife sold it to my dad. Now my dad and I own it. The 80 year old guy i work just happened to recognize that tractor and told us the truth of how the man was killed on it.
