Shively has a history of being home to many bourbon distilleries, however most of them have left over time. Today, it's a suburb with low home values and low performing public schools. Property crime is high, and home values are low. It's not the worst place, but it's also not the best.

Well to be fair, the Churchill Downs grounds themselves are very nice. The surrounding neighborhood though? Absolutely awful. But, that's the area. Very low-income and not many opportunities for making money unless you're renting your house out as an Airbnb during derby, or trying to sell extra driveway space as parking for the event if you're close enough.

Property prices down because of it. I think its getting like that everywhere. All the shootings everyday something needs to be done.😢

I lived in Louisville for over 3 decades before moving away in 2014. When I lived there, I never felt comfortable shopping at any Kroger. I was saddened when the Winn Dixie grocery store chain pulled out of Louisville in the early 2000s. Since I moved away there have been shootings inside and outside of a couple Kroger in Louisville. It's really sad. Also Chris, a lot of the Walmarts have grocery stores inside of them. On Dixie highway, not exactly in Shively, but further down in Valley Station, there is a Meijer, a Kroger, Walmart kiosk grocery stores, etc. To me, there was never a shortage of places to shop for groceries. And you also have to understand how incredibly close all of the different areas are in Louisville. People there don't mind driving 5 or 10 miles to other areas to shop.

My favorite grocery store was Winn Dixie. And I do remember the A&Ps grocery stores as well. Winn Dixie moved out of Louisville in early 2000. A&Ps moved out in the early 90's I believe. I traveled to Louisville 6 times in 2021 to sell my house. If you haven't been in over 25 years, it will look and feel very different to you. Louisville has improved, the city knocked down all the brick projects: Cotter Homes, Southwick, Beecher Terrace, Clarksdale...all of them except Park Hill! They have a few entertainment districts now: 4th Street Live, Water Front Park and NuLu. It's a lot more to do entertainment wise, but still not a lot of high-paying jobs unless you're highly skilled or specialized in certain fields. I have friends and family in Louisville, so I do visit when I can.

Hi Chris, Louisville native here...I moved away in 2014 because my husband's education in his chosing field reached the ceiling of the amount of income one can earn in Louisville. In other words, there is a limit to how much you can earn in certain careers in Louisville. I didn't want to move, but you can't earn 6 figures there no matter how educated you are unless you are a Doctor or something. But you know, it makes sense because the cost of living is very low in Louisville. I have a Kentucky real estate license and a college degree. My husband has a Master's degree. The houses are not expensive in Louisville compared to where we moved to. Average houses here start at $400,000. So you need to be paid a lot more to survive. This is unlike Louisville where you can buy a house for under $100,000. Anyway, thanks for exploring Louisville. You offer so much information about it. It's difficult to believe you gathered all this information in only 2 days. You are very funny as well. Side note: Lots of Folk in Louisville don't identify with the rest of Kentucky...and this includes me. It's like Louisville is a totally separate and different place from the rest of Kentucky. Two different worlds... Those mountain dew drinking people live in the mountains in Appalachia. Louisville is metropolitan, a cool city that is very different from the rest of Kentucky.

I disagree a bit with the dew drinkers part. A lot of them are scattered all over Louisville. Another disagreement on the housing situation unless you're strictly looking at the West end, in which case; good luck and don't get got. You are right, for the most part, about people in Louisville seeing themselves as being apart from the rest of Kentucky though. Being somewhat educated and being closer than an hour's drive to anything of significance tends to do that.

I'm from Louisville. A lot of people actually prefer to live in Shively so they can be closer to downtown. I bought my first house in Valley Station in 2001. We were the only black family living there at the time. We lived in a subdivision called Prairie Village. Valley Station has/had a racist stigma attached to it from the 1974 federal bussing policy to de-segregate public schools. There were riots because of Valley High school bussing blacks into the school in the 70s I had no problems living in Valley Station. As a matter of fact, I encouraged others to move to Valley Station as well. It's actually becoming more diverse now. I owned my home in Valley Station for 20 years. I sold it last year in July of 2021.

@@veggielover4336 I will never forget the road block that my family encountered around the mid 1970s one evening when we were trying to find the middle school that my brother was scheduled to attend. My mother thought that it was the police, but it was the white sheet terrorists in full gear with rifles in tow, shouting N get out of here. That was my first time seeing that K organization upfront and personal. Around the late 80s my mother moved to Shively and I saw a boy around 6 to 8 years old run to the back of his house in his K uniform. I was walking to the laundromat. I am shocked that you didn't run into any problems at Pleasure Ridge Park or Vallry Station late at night or in the early mornings.
@veggielover4336
@veggielover4336 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Diane, sorry to hear that. I bought a house in Valley Station in April, 2001. At that time, we were the only black family living in Prairie Village in Valley Station. I can say without a doubt that we, myself and my family, experienced no racist behavior. No one burned crosses in our front yard or said anything racist to us. No one threw eggs at our home. I actually felt like we were welcomed into the neighborhood. I guess I'm saying we didn't experience any blatant racist behavior. All of our neighbors, whom were all white, welcomed us. We were invited to parties at our neighbors and we invited our neighbors into our home as well. Then again, this is after 2001. Some time had passed since the 1974 federal public school de-segregation policies took place. Valley Station in Louisville is diversifying. More black and other families have moved in the area. *What I noticed when I moved to Valley Station in 2001, is that all of the racists associated with the 1974 bus riots to keep blacks away were old and dying off. When their houses come up for sale, new generations of progressively thinking families like mine begun moving in. I really enjoyed my 20 year homeownership in Valley Station.

Churchill downs and that whole area in general is not a "good" or "safe" part of town. Neither is campus itself. I was intentionally run over on my motorcycle in that part of town. While I was lying unconscious on the ground the Individuals who attacked me stole my backpack along with everything in my pockets. Wallet, phone, keys, all gone. Within reason I would say you cant really say there is a GOOD or BAD part of town. Unless your talking about a gated community filled with million dollar homes, I guess you wouldn't have to constantly look over your shoulder if you were in one of these. The police reports wont say it because the criminal justice system in this country is broken, and has been for a long time, but as far as I'm concerned there was an attempt on my life just 2 blocks away from campus housing. Pretty crazy if you ask me. Can't even feel safe on my home campus

He is pronouncing Louisville “correctly”.. lemme ask you something.. when you say Nashville, Jacksonville, or even Clarksville (from across the bridge), do you pronounce their “ville” with a “vul”? So why just, Louisville?

I pronounce Louisville 3 different ways depending on who I'm talking to. When I'm talking to Louisville natives, I stress the "vulle." But with others I say: Louey-ville and so on. I think Louisville is a neat and unique place. I often visit my peeps there. I moved away in 2014.

Kinda shitty to go to towns and make fun of everything, but it works for the KZfaq algorithm. Likes, dislikes and comments (like this one) generate Adsense revenue. I see what you did there. LOL.

Chris' videos are kinda balanced to me. He's mostly thorough in the research he does. I think he's funny...and a lot of the things he points out about Louisville are accurate. Louisville native here...

Why do you have to be so judgmental, I moved to shively from J- town and yeah at first it's not the best but if I recall a man was shot in the head holding his granddaughters hand in Kroger in that area, haven't had anything like that happen here. Just because it's a "nice" part of town doesn't mean it's safe. Also I make about $50k a year and my home is worth $140k so lay off

I grew up in Sively. I went to Butler grad 1985. Shively then was so great. Now not so much. It was low crime and blue collar middle class. Your commentary is RUDE.

when I was a kid in the 70s Shively was a blue collar nieborhood - Busing ruined the fabric of so many of these areas - kids who live a block apart barely know one another if at all - it's a travesty
