@@chiefkeef6405 Did you need the joke explained? Go back to your school for a refund. i·ro·ny1 /ˈīrənē/ noun MEANING: the expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect. "“Don't go overboard with the gratitude,' he rejoined with heavy irony" Similar: sarcasm; sardonicism; dryness; causticity; satire. Opposite: sincerity a state of affairs or an event that seems deliberately contrary to what one expects and is often amusing as a result. Example: "the irony is that I thought he could help me" Similar: a literary technique, originally used in Greek tragedy, by which the full significance of a character's words or actions are clear to the audience or reader although unknown to the character.

QTip is a genius. Record companies didn’t understand their music when they dropped this demo. A whole story , this is a mastermind. Wayyy advanced for its time. No the lyrics aren’t that great but it’s the story telling and the style.

@audreymuzingo933 3 жыл бұрын
Can you explain how the lyrics AREN'T the story-telling? I'm not being cheeky; I'm sincerely curious how you're differentiating one from the other. I was in high school when this song came out, loved it instantly and love it still, and still think the lyrics were perfectly clever, while telling a story. And what got me thinking about this was this: I somehow never really listened to Biz Markie's 'Just A Friend' (1989, one year before 'Segundo'), but I played it recently, and could not believe how bad it sucked!! Like I am a 47 year old white woman but I could write better lyrics than that, lol. And Biz' bad attempt at singing; I get that he wasn't actually trying to sing well, just singing "comedically" but I don't find it funny, it actually gives me embarrassment goosebumps, ha!

+C Jones What the hell are you talking "didn't think too hard about writing"? This is an excellent storytelling joint, wherein one does have to think considerably because you're telling a story/scenario in rhyme form, not just trying to rhyme anything with anything or rhyming for only the sake of sounding dope/impressive. *Which.. there's nothing wrong with that, Braggadocio is great, an integral part of Hip-Hop. I call bullshit in regard to your comment, especially as if Nas is the only MC that "thinks hard" when it comes to their rhymes.

+C Jones Also, I'd like to point out the A Tribe Called Quest could write lyrics when they wanted to (like Excursions, or Butter). That being said, criticising I Left My Wallet In El Segundo for being simplistic is like criticising techno for being repetitive. It's true, but missing the point. I never heard anyone complain ever about De La Soul for writing simple, non-complex lyrics because the point of it was the music itself.

Lyrics Left my wallet in El Segundo Left my wallet in El Segundo Left my wallet in El Segundo I gotta get, I got-got ta get it I left my wallet in El Segundo Left my wallet in El Segundo Left my wallet in El Segundo I gotta get, I got-got ta get it My mother went away for a month-long trip Her and some friends on an ocean-liner ship She made a big mistake by leaving me home I had to roam so I picked up the phone Dialed Ali up to see what was going down Told him I pick him up so we could drive around Took the Dodge Dart, a '74 My mother left a yard but I needed one more Shaheed had me covered with a hundred greenbacks So we left Brooklyn and we made big tracks Drove down the Belt, got on the Conduit Came to a toll, we paid and went through it Had no destination, we was on a quest Ali laid in the back so he could get rest Drove down the road for two-days-and-a-half The sun had just risen on a dusty path Just then a figure had caught my eye A man with a sombrero who was four feet high I pulled over to ask were we was at His index finger he tipped up his hat "El Segundo, " he said, "my name is Pedro If you need directions, I'll tell you pronto" Needed civilization, some sort of reservation He said a mile south, there's a fast food station Thanks, senor, as I start up the motor Ali said, "Damn, tip, why you drive so far for?" Anyway a gas station we passed We got gas and went on to get grub It was a nice little pub in the middle of nowhere Anywhere would have been better I ordered enchiladas and I ate 'em Ali had the fruit punch When we finished we thought for ways to get back I had a hunch Ali said, "Pay for lunch" So I did it Pulled out the wallet and I saw this wicked beautiful lady She was a waitress there Put the wallet down and stared and stared To put me back into reality, here's Shaheed "Yo, Tip, man, you got what you need?" I checked for keys and started to step What do you know, my wallet I forget Yo, it was a brown wallet, it had props numbers Had my jimmy hats I got to get it man Lord, have mercy The heat got hotter, Ali stars to curse me I fell bad but he makes me feel badder Chit-chit-chatter, car stars to scatter Breaking on out, we was Northeast bound Jettin' on down at the speed of sound Three days coming and three more going We get back and there was no slack 490 Madison, we're here, Sha He said, "All right, Tip, see you tomorrow" Thinking about the past week, the last week Hands go in my pocket, I can't speak Hopped in the car and torpe'ed to the shack Of Shaheed, "we gotta go back" when he said "Why?" I said, "we gotta go Cause I left my wallet in El Segundo" Yeah, I left my wallet in El Segundo Left my wallet in El Segundo Left my wallet in El Segundo I gotta get, I got-got ta get it Left my wallet in El Segundo Left my wallet in El Segundo Left my wallet in El Segundo Come on let's go

I understand if young people don't think the beat of this song is so great, because it wasn't made to be listened to on a phone or even the best headphones. I'm listening on my 1992 Radio Shack speakers the size of mini-fridges, with 15" woofers, which I have never turned up even close to top volume because it would so clearly be dangerous to living things, and I literally cannot say how much money it would take to buy them off me. They are ideal for this song; the only other way to listen to it might be a really good car system. In other words, it's not the kind of beat that is satisfying enough to hear with your ears; you need to feel it come up through your feet and/or your ass, through your intestines, your liver, to challenge the beat of your heart.

@audreymuzingo933 2 жыл бұрын
@@jayski8987 I haven't listened to CV's but a richie friend of mine had big Norman Lab ones in the 90's and I didn't say so but I think my Olympus ones sounded even better than those. They have woodgrain boxes but I wish I could upload a photo here. --About 10 years ago I got sick of looking at the ratty fabric covers, all scratched up by cats and candle wax dripped down the front, one of them more gray than black because it sat in a sunny spot for years. So I decided to re-cover them and was just going to get black fabric again, but then I thought 'why settle for that?' I got this antique-looking Japanese pattern with big koi fish jumping through waterfalls, plugged in the hot glue gun, and BAM. I see that Olympus speakers now fetch crazy money on Ebay but it would take more than money to pry these from me. It's not just the bass, I mean it's effin THERE, believe me, but the mid and high ranges are so nimble too, it makes everything sound like it's happening live in front of you, from whispered conversation to a symphony's violin solo. I have a Kenwood rack system too (almost as old as the speakers) with a 200 CD jukebox I hardly ever use anymore. I found the right bluetooth adapter a couple years ago; no more thick cord running across the room. But another reason I wouldn't give up these speakers is how much we've been through together, LOL. They've moved at least 15 times, waited for me in storage facilities without climate control for months while I lived on someone's couch, even been in pawn a few times. I treated them like that over and over, but still they keep giving me their best. Take my 15 year old kid, but take your grubby paws off mah boom babies. J/K. Mostly.

I have no idea why I like this song so much, before I saw Rap Critics video I never realized how uneventful this song is. It's not that lyrically gifted. I think it's the confidence that the band displays being willing to make such goofy music with a fun loving attitude, and total dedication. No one in this band is half assing it AT ALL. They know what they are and they did it better than so many of their contemporaries, especially back when Rap was going in a more Gangsta direction.

I had just completed my first quarter of 9th grade Spanish when this came out, and I was already eyeballs deep in love with De La Soul, so I had to check out these dudes. When I first heard this I was a wee bit irked at the pronunciation of 'Segundo' (it's really "seh-goon-doh" and it means "second;" I don't know what was El Primero, the first, LOL). But come on. That Flamenco guitar intro, the brilliant lyrics, all the scratching, THAT BEAT? !VAMANOS!

El Segundo is a blighted industrial sector by the beach, near LAX airport in Los Angeles County. The residential area looks like any other SoCal suburb. Inglewood (up to no good) is only 10 minutes away from it by surface streets so it's not like it's in the middle of nowhere.
