I'm not a big metal head, but I've been listening to Death a lot, lately. I love music history of any genre, so it was inevitable I'd have to listen to Death, but it was really reading his interviews that made me excited about the music. Chuck Schuldiner was a very smart guy with a great heart, and a musical genius. The term "musical genius" gets overused, but he really was; helped forge an entire genre and also went far beyond, staying true to metal all the way.

My old Oakland based band Thanatopsis had the honor of opening for Death and Nevermore two nights in a row at Berkeley Square in 1995 during the Symbolic tour and Nevermore was promoting their self titled debut album, but half the set were Sanctuary songs which was fine by me! The bigger honor was being able to converse with both Chuck and Warrel since they are now no longer with us! Chuck was sick with the flu during those shows so he mostly stayed on Death’s tour bus and wasn’t as approachable and talkative as he was when we opened for death during their previous tour supporting their Individual Thought Patterns album in 1993 at the Stone in SF, an iconic club from the beginning of the Bay Area Thrash Scene where Metallica played a lot during their Garage Days etc. Anyhow, I digress, since Nevermore was touring in a van back then, they were trapped in the green room with us, and we were geeking out especially me because Sanctuary was one of our favorite bands and Warrel was one our favorite lyricists/singers, so I sort of bombarded him with questions about Sanctuary lyrics etc. but he was very approachable and was more than happy to answer my questions! I think my fan boy-ness inspired them to add a few more sanctuary songs to the set list, but then Warrel commented that they were excessive with the Sanctuary songs on the set list, to which I replied you can never play too many sanctuary songs but wasn’t too familiar with Nevermore yet, so nowadays I would rather hear some Nevermore deep cuts than Sanctuary songs but at some point both bands were active at the same time so no need for Nevermore to play Sanctuary “covers”! They always remembered me/us at future Nevermore gigs, in fact Jeff Loomis told me at one of those future gigs that he still had/has the Thanatopsis shirt we gave him and he wore on stage during the second night we played with them and Death at Berkeley Square so that was really flattering considering how much Band Merch they are given on tours, we stood out! Warrel was not only a great lyricist/singer but a great human being, I feel blessed to of been in his and Chuck’s presence, May They both Rest In Power!

@@chrisstolle Thanx for the comprehensive insights and story, a great, one in a life time experience I guess. Anyhow, Nevermore and Sanctuary are the ONLY bands that had me buy all their releases / discographies. There are several other bands with flawless discographies (Death included) but for some reason Nevermore / Sanctuary are the chosen ones in that respect. Into metal since '91, I had the chance to see Nevermore live on 14.03.2001 on their Dead Heart tour with Annihilator and Soilwork, a show I will never forget. Hopefully, Jeff Loomis will continue to release his instrumental works to keep the Nevermore - like metal flame alive. I will check out your frm band Thanatopsis, I have seen on Metal Archives they have one album out. Regards from Romania 's Transylvania region, Eastern Europe). Metal memories over space and time

@@jonnyh2667 Many lead singers can be replaced but several few cannot. King Diamond and Warrel Dane are among those few. Mercyful Fate and Nevermore can never carry on without these two without turning into some completely different bands. As of now I am not aware of someone who can replace Warrel also considering he's one of a kind songwriting skills. Queensryche had a perfect replacement with Todd la Torre on board (same tone, vocal range), literally reviving the band.

I am filled with mixed and even contradicting emotions... It is soooooo saddening to know that we lost Chuck... But at the same time, it is amazing to see "living legend" Steve.... I hope we adequatly appreciate, his positive energy and unique attitude to music... I hope so...

Amazing! I wish I could be there. I miss gigs. First band could play all night long, they played perfectly. If U close your eyes and listenn U think it's real Death. Amazing.

That green ESP sounds as bad ass as ever! Heard it in person several times! I am grateful I turned 21 just just in time to see Death live on the final tour. I regret not asking Chuck and Richard to sign my CD, I got Scott and Shannon though. I recognize Megadeth's drummer Dirk there, he's kicking major ass!
