During the project of playing and posting songs written by CSN&Y, I came up with the idea of weaving the titles of their tunes into a song. In a way, this song sort of wrote itself.
A TRIBUTE TO CSN&Y
Years ago more than four and twenty - and as I came of age
Seems like such a long time gone - too soon to turn back the page
And so begins the task to honor - Crosby Stills Nash & Young
Truly music is love - in the many words they’ve sung
I’ve strolled through Johnny’s Garden - seen the Southern Cross up in the sky
I found my heart of gold - seen military madness, tell me why
Can’t remember my name on the way home - or when I almost cut my hair
For what it’s worth - everybody knows this is nowhere
I am a simple man - so please pardon my heart
When you love the one you’re with - only love can break your heart
So teach your children well - ‘bout the days that used to be
Dance to that harvest moon - and rock on like when the world was free
Songs that would carry me - all along the lee shore
Or down by the river - we have all been here before
Comes a time as an old man - when you sit yourself down
You can see the changes - but you don’t let it bring you down
From suite Judy blue eyes - to wasted on the way
When not helplessly hoping - laughing as time fades away
Hits you right between the eyes - but you don’t have to cry
It’s just a song before I go - and now I’ll go and say goodbye
