This time I would like to show you the trick I have used to connect and understand de Pentatonic Patterns. This system helped me to play in the five positions, separated or together ,upside down, avoiding that "black holes" where I did not know what was going on there.

Man, something about visualizing the patterns this way has given me a Eureka moment. I never really thought about it in zones and finding the patterns that way. The diagonal patterns are a very useful way to visualize it.Thank you!

Interesting description, i have found that by studying where the root note is for the appropriate key signature works better for me, knowing the intervals was also a major breakthrough.

Thanks Marty I have been playing for so long I find this much easier to go up and down the neck. Maybe I wasn’t that good. But this really helps. I agree having the notes named or 1 3 4 5 notes listed would be useful. But that is knit picking really really well done.

Thanks Marty. This is along my way of viewing and rationalizing the fretboard. Thanks. I like to name the strings within the pentatonic pattern like a neighborhood. For minor it’s 1. Primary root note string, 2. blue note string, 3. alt root note string, 4. Blue note, 5. Tail. For major 1. Primary root note string, 2. blue note string, 3. Tail, 4, alt root note string, 5. Blue note. I also use the string numbers to tell me the primary shape to play, I just have to choose the mode and place my appropriate finger on the root note, automatic play by numbers. 6=G shape, 5=C, 4=E, 3=A, 2=D. Playing by numbers for shapes and degrees and you can easily shift modes, keys, chase chords, randomly jump around to different equivalent shapes. It’s amazing and fun! I now master the fretboard. 😀

Good concept! But this force you to continue from a box to another without to know where the root is. Try another pictures with colours choosing only one zone with four or five notes with the root like main. This way lets you find all pentatonic patterns in any tune without doubts and very fast. Thats the way I use when I’m playing and when I teach too.

How do you know where or why position is 1 or 2 or 3….?

You can call the as you want as long you play the right notes. We use to call box one to the position we start with index finger on the 6th string. Just put in google "5 boxes minor pentatonic scale" and learn the 5 patterns with the root and name. Thanks!

Why do call position 1 or pattern 1 that.In the CAGED system its the Em or G shape which is pattern 4 or 3.

The CAGED wont work on everything. ( especailly on other SCALES)... What it dose is help you LOCATE the ROOT and OCTIVE. You're on the GUITAR...not the PIANO..... KEYS are just PITCH..if you can play in Amin/C MAJOR...you can play in any keys...The Keys of G MAJOR/E minor or whatever KEYS will have the SAME INTERVAL....it;s just the same scale in a different PITCH. You can use the fretboard like a SLIDE RULER. You NEED to learn INTERVALS of the NOTES...not just meaningless DOTS. Everything is REFERENCE to the MAJOR scale INTERVAL.... example...If Im playing in Bb Minor....Im not wondering if the notes are in ALPHABETS Eb, Ab....ect..Thats Batshiet crazy.lol Im just playing the same Old stuff...a FRET Higher... But I need to know the INTERVALS...becuase there;s other SCALES and modes aside from the MAJOR/minor scale. You need to learn to play the MODES from ROOT to ROOT...one octive at a time...Towards the BRIDGE ( barr chord shape) And towards the NUT...open chord shape....NOTICE the triad or ARPEGGIOS....1, b3, 5, b7 or you can sweep the A min 1 b3, 5 arpeggio. example...A note (root) 12 fret...play towards the NUT....target the OCTIVE on the 10 fret....(you're ASCENDING)...see the shape or pattern in ONE octive Place your PINKY on the ROOT. CALL out the INTERVALS as you play each note... Then DESCEND ( shift your hand) play towards the NUT...target the A note on the D string ..Play the A min BARR chord shape there..with the ROOT on the D string..... Continue to DESCEND....towards the NUT...target the ROOT (A note LOW E string) Play towards the NUT.....Make the A minor TRIAD...towards the NUT ASCEND....Target the A note on the G string 2nd fret.

I don't know if he got this far but...if you are playing ANY set of 2 notes on a string, if the first pair is a WHOLE step(2 frets)apart, then the next pair of 2 notes (on the SAME string) will be a WHOLE and a 1\2 step(3 frets) from each other! The exception is C to D ,a whole step, the D to E, another Whole step. All the other notes are two then three, then two, three etc.

Seems quite a long lesson really to just basically explain that octaves are your markers for mapping out the fretboard... surely it's easier to just explain that an octave is always gonna be say in A .. 0 10 0 7 0 5 So two frets above the open E string on the D string (miss a string) and then because of the way the guitar is tuned 3 frets above the octave on the D string on the B string.. And whatever pattern you play starting on the E string can then be repeated on each of those octaves So 8 10 12 (String tuned up one)8 (10) 5 7 9 5 (7) 3 5 7 3 (5) Then to get creative you could make a variation of them patterns everytime you reach an octave marker But basically you only need to know where the octaves are which is an easy lesson to teach

Why would you need that? Just start first position on the root of the scale/key you want to play in and everything else falls into place. Also if you want to play in major pentatonic just find the root and move three frets down and play position one from there.
