I was looking to see who the interview was because this is 1 of the best interviews I've heard with Brian! So delightful not to hear the same stuff repeated over and over. And even some of the stuff I've heard he said in a new and A lot more depth. Should I know the guy interviewing him? I don't know the name and I didn't recognize him, So I'm wondering if he was only big on your side of the pond, or if I've just lost brain cells LOL

I did go to their recent concert with Adam Lambert-whom I've always loved since his American Idol days. So it was pretty cool to watch him with Queen. Bet they were glad they got Freddie in, in the end...because Freddie paved the way and knew where he wanted to take the band. It was Freddie who pushed them. Freddie got the costumes as he would say they needed to be noticed. The other guys thought they wanted to carry on at their colleges. Freddie said they had to do it properly if they wanted to get some where. Freddie was also closely involved at the mixing desk and production. Roger said Freddie was ever the professional and a hard worker, and Freddie never much then had a drink up until 1978. The rest is history.

Freddie had other bands that didn't hit it big. I bet he was glad he got Brian, Roger and John in as well. :)
@sharonallforloveandpositiv54972 жыл бұрын
@@theaterpup3466 I have said that too. But this video was about when Brian met Freddie and Freddie wanting in on the group. Of course there wouldn't have been Queen without the others, it goes without saying!! My point was, they originally were not interested in having Freddie... so hence they ALL wouldn't be where they are now had they not taken him. Had it been Freddie talking in a video about joining Brian and Roger, I would have said exactly the same, I bet Freddie was glad they joined him...!!!... But, both Brian and Roger have said they were going to give up, that is, until Freddie joined and pushed them. Freddie saved the day again for them when he wrote Bohemian Rhapsody. Brian said the band were totally poor, even with 3 albums.. and when John Reid took over, it was make or break... Bohemian Rhapsody turned it all around... Brian said, had it not have worked out, they would have finished the band and given up. Brian said this himself in the Documentary "from Rags to Rhapsody". It was risky putting Bohemian Rhapsody out as a single, because it was different...but it worked. Brian and Roger have always spoken of Bohemian Rhapsody, it's still famous today and reached RAA Diamond award status...the first British UK single to do that. They all made Queen. No disputing that. I'm just saying Brian even said had it not been for Freddie pushing them, there may not have been Queen. Without any of them there would not have been, and who knows if any of them would still have formed other bands...we will never know because I for one am glad they all found one another.. Freddie would be the first to say they were all 4 equals in the band. Each brought there own to the table. And that's true. 💯
@Motown-1966 Жыл бұрын
@@sharonallforloveandpositiv5497 Exactly! Don’t mind TheaterPup as they’re more a Rogah Taylah fan 😂! That said, the biggest sticking point for me is that Freddie didn’t join Bri/Rog as in Smile tho. Smile officially disbanded ‘n every single Queen interview prior to Freddie’s demise confirms this! Fact: Freddie wanted to join Smile when their keyboardist, Chris Smith left the band ‘bout a yr prior to Tim leaving. Bri blocked Freddie citing ‘they’d already had a great lead singer in Tim’ - which was what he’d said here actually. Long story short, Smile legally disbanded in April ‘70 ‘n Queen didn’t officially form ‘til June ‘70. How in the hell can Freddie ‘change’ the name of their band when Smile had already been legally disbanded by two months?!!! And it was Rog’s mum who booked Queen’s first concert as she’d booked it out for Smile. Tim actually stuck it to Bri ‘n Rog ‘n Queen’s first concert was billed: Queen (formerly Smile) with Mike Gross as their bassist. Freddie’s other two bands disbanded approximately April of ‘70 as well. He was in Ibex which he’d *DID* changed the name to Wreckage, but behind everybody’s backs. The band ended-up goin’ back up to northern England ‘n eventually disbanded. Freddie joined-up with another band called Sour Milk Sea, but the founder/leader of that band felt threatened by Freddie’s visions of where he’d thought the band’s directions should go. Freddie also used to harmonized with Tim at the college’s men’s bathroom as they had great acoustics. Freddie likely never wanted to replace Tim, but to sing along side of him, harmonizing. He REALLY loved their voices (Bri/Rog/Tim) ‘n he’d hoped to make the 3 piece band back into a 4 piece band. I personally think there were egos involved which came into play…keeping Freddie in ‘his place’ & I suspect it was more to do with Bri but it also had been Bri feeling he needed to stick-up for his mate Tim as well. I can totally see Tim being annoyed with Freddie but since they were college mates, he couldn’t bring himself to tell Freddie to fuck-off. So maybe he’d gotten Bri to do it for him as it wouldn’t be anything for him to do as Freddie ‘n he weren’t friends at that time but Bri ‘n Tim went way back.

ITA! There’s something a bit off with the way Bri has progressively told the inception of Queen over time. It’s really something of a fairytale…especially the part that Freddie joined Smile ‘n ‘changed’ the name to Queen. All Queen interviews that speak of Queen’s origins ALWAYS says that Smile disbanded, broke-up, split ‘n that Bri ‘n Rog were resolved to finishing graduate studies. It was Freddie who approached them after Sour Milk Sea broke-up over personnel differences…Freddie was kicked out of Wreckage for the stunt of changing the band’s name from Ibex behind everybody’s backs (well this is the story that’s being brought forward by some of the former Ibex/Wreckage members in a few documentaries). Freddie had more to loose in that he really didn’t want to work in his diploma field of arts/graphic design ‘n approached Bri ‘n Rog to give this band thingy one more try. I know he’d wanted to join Smile when Chris Smith, Smile’s former keyboardist left the band. It was Bri who blocked Freddie from joining Smile…citing that they [Smile] already had a great lead singer in Tim. That said, I also know that Freddie ‘n Tim were college students ‘n friends. It’s quite possible that Tim might’ve felt threatened by Freddie’s ‘unsolicited’ suggestions but perhaps didn’t have the nerve to tell him to his face to back off. Freddie could be quite insistant by many accounts ‘n if Tim’s personality isn’t one to stand-up to others, I could see Bri stepping up to the plate to tell Freddie to back off. After all, he ‘n Tim were mates LONG b4 Freddie ‘n Tim were. Bri might’ve felt compelled to defend Tim to Freddie as HE wasn’t friends with him at that time. But goin’ back to the fairytale, I noticed the story of Queen’s inception had progressively gone from Tim leaving for Humpy Bong, Smile spliting, Bri/Rog & Freddie starting Queen to Freddie jumping in to replace Tim ‘cos he was hanging in the wings, changed the name from Smile to Queen, and went on to design the band’s logo. I couldn’t help but noticed the very last interview/documentary Tim was in how his tone has changed from being very humble: ‘well it’s a good thing I’d gotten out of the way or Queen wouldn’t have formed’ to ‘Freddie couldn’t wait for me to leave’ to ‘Freddie probably wanted to push me out of the way.’ He too is goin’ along with Bri’s fairytale that Smile was born from their former group 1984…as if! Were they two in 1984, sure, but there were a bunch of other guys that were also part of that band as well. Are THEY to say they’re connected to Smile/Queen by way of Bri/Tim? Noooo. So why would Bri/Tim connect Queen by way of Smile (1984 by way of Bri)? We all know…it’s the May ego. Bri always felt HE was in charged of Queen…that HE was Queen’s leader ‘cos to HIM, it’s origins goes back to Smile/1984 groups. Nevermind the others all having been in some group or another. It just amazes me how Bri ‘n now Tim are spinning this now.

@@Motown-1966 Ibex/wreckage if there was a huge offer then maybe they would have considered it but they only intended Ibex to be something to do during the summer then back to studies. smile were still finishing their studies but were hoping for a big brake name- interviews they said Freddie rang them up suggesting the new name saying he had spoken to the others and they were fine with it were they, each said yes and he had already changed the name on their equipment. they realised he had rang them all up saying the same thing! but didn't seem cross, I think that was pretty much near the beginning. they said they wished they had made more effort to stay in touch with him but it was on good terms they split up. when they formed Queen the guy from Ibex helped set up university gigs so they were still on good terms and supportive the first time Freddie performed as such with Brian, Roger ( Tim) was at the sink Liverpool he was performing with Ibex and they as smile in liverpool they went to see him and he got them to do an encore Smile/Queen when they had formed Queen the guy from Ibex spoke to Freddie asked jokingly well what did you name them he said Queen, his response was you will never get away with that Fred but he did! I don't know if Freddie did the crest afterwards or if that was part of his selling pitch! I doubt Brian would have agreed had he realised the gay connotations of it but the three of them gave suggestions and chose Queen their first gig was for charity organised by Rogers mother who advertised it as Smile but when they got there Freddie announced they were Queen Roger said they had given up on Smile and were calling it a day but Freddie encouraged them to start again with him, it was a new start, new band new vision and approach I can't find anything that Freddie wanted to replace Chris on keyboards or that Freddie wanted to replace Tim as singer he was friends with Tim if that idea is only coming from Brian and no one else I'm dismissing it. Tim said Freddie was giving advice but didn't see himself as the front man Freddie was suggesting or how Freddie performed with Ibex I don't believe Freddie was trying to push Tim out where have you seen or had the impression that Brian had to defend Tim that Freddie was actually trying to replace him? because I haven't seen anything I've seen Brian and Roger together and Roger separately saying Freddie suggested himself when Tim left and 'felt' he 'may ' have always been interested in joining them but no suggestion that Freddie had actually suggested that when Tim was with them I was writing responses as I was working through your comment. I'm a bit confused I thought you were suggesting Freddie was pushing Tim out of the way and Brian probably had to defend him, I haven't seen anything to suggest that it came across that Tim was genuine about Freddie and explaining the situation but seemed to t hen be convinced that maybe Freddie had planned to nudge him out of the way I can't see that it's wrong if Brian is feeding him that idea when I haven't seen Brian say that or Roger who clearly says he suggested himself when Tim left in retrospect he may have wanted to join them before Brian has a habit of implying he knows things or even re telling as if he was there then later explaining he wasn't 'Freddie and Bowie came to blows' Mack' Bowie was getting pushy with producing so I rang Fred to come smooth things out' Brian ' oh well I wasn't actually there' he implies he knows what Freddies songs are about and they are keeping it secret then admits Freddie never explain the list goes on! a few of their commentary videos Brian has talked as if it was his song or a band collab and Roger has had to politely remind him it was his (Roger) song! Brian was talking about who wants to live forever he said his marriage was over at the time and his Dad had died who hadn't died until years later! I don't like things I've seen implying it was Brians band he then allowed Freddie to join when Tim left Brian the 'mastermind' behind Queen

According to ken testi Roger and Brian took a lift with Freddie up to Liverpool to watch Ibex/wreckage Edit I assumed the article I saw was right that they were doing another gig. Testi said they performed as wreckage. So no they didn't kick him out and if they had they wouldn't have then helped him
