My Great Grandparents came from Germany in Early March of 1914. My Great Grandma was 6 months pregnant with my Grandma during the journey to America. They landed at Ellis Island in March 3rd 1914 and Grandma was born June 4th 1914. And my Grandma had my Mom March 12th 1939. My Great Great Maternal Grandfather came all the way from Iowa to New York City to pick up them up. He stayed at a boarding house waiting 2 days for their ship to arrive. And he walked 2 times a day to check to see if they had arrived yet. My Great Grandfather had been terribly sick during the voyage. He was pale and a little green from being seasick for the 4 day voyage. And a woman who was coming back to America from Germany warned my Grandpa don’t look sick. They can either turn you away and send you back, OR they will keep you in the sick bay for however many days as they feel like keeping you. So Grandma snuck down to the engine room and grabbed a piece of charcoal. And she rubbed a little on her hands to rub on his face to make him not look sick. So My Grandma held my Great Uncle and Grandpa held my Great Aunt. About 5 hours later they stepped outside of the depot and my Great Great Grandpa saw his daughter. And they headed to the boardinghouse and they got cleaned up and Great Grandpa shaved and in the early morning they Great great grandpa and my Great Grandparents and the littles all got train tickets for Iowa. Great Great Grandpa lived until 1936 and Great Grandpa lived until 1961. And the baby Great Grandma was pregnant with lived until 2005. She was 91.

@@biggiebeats1490, he may have had to kill the people responsible for kidnapping those children in the first place, but he didn't murder them. Murder is unjustified killing. Those deaths of an evil and cruel captors were more than justified. That's the problem with some people of today's generation, you can't see the forest for the tress, context means nothing to you. So weak of mind and thought. Want to talk about easy to control? You should look in the mirror.

He didn't.. no one really knew. His wife found the registrar in the attic of their house and asked him about it. He explained that was a list of names of children on a transport that came out of Europe during the war and were rehomed by British families. I think there is a statue of him at Bank Station in London(i know there is a statuesomewhere that ive been to). His wife went to a reporter and asked that reporter to help find the children. That reporter went to the BBC, and they started to work together to find everyone. He had no idea what his wife had done until this very broadcast. He was only then hailed as a hero, and later, the statue to him was erected AFTER he got knighted. He never wanted glory.. he just wanted to save the children and spent his own money to get them here. He also asked others to help pay for their transport to get more out and make sure the train was as full as possible to get as many out as possible.. I paid homage to him and also went to Auschwitz in Poland for my homage .

@@carmenburton4918 to know that he had kept a list of those children, the children he helped rescued and save, must have meant a lot to him just knowing that those children were somewhere safe and had grown up and probably had children of their own. Now that's a secret that is worth holding on to.

I'm glad he got the recognition he deserves. These are the people society should regard. In trialing times, he stood by his morals and acted on his beliefs out of the kindness of his heart. That's more than most people can say. Truly a hero to many and an inspiration to all. Edit: a short search showed that his mother also helped in rehoming these children and that besides the kids they helped get adopted in Britain, Sweden was the only country to take in other orphaned children. They attempted to save thousands of children but only these 600+ had made it. Just reading this made me cry so one can only imagine their pain and suffering. May all those children and their families rest in peace.
