Good stuff, whilst I still use the old sand and dry brush method for some bases I have pretty much gravitated to using Vallejo mud in its various colours. Whilst drying I place the tufts to build it up then let it set. Its fun seeing how quickly the overall look of the minis transform once the bases are done.

That tool you use is a dental instrument called a Le Cron carver - used for carving wax which was then used to make gold crowns/fillings using the lost wax technique.

It’s interesting to see other peoples basing techniques. Must admit I still do the old, pva+sand, paint dark brown, a couple of lighter coloured dry brushes, edge and then add rocks and tufts and flock at the end. Most of my stuff is smaller scale though. I can see why you’d put a bit more effort into basing 28mm.

Nice tutorial on how you do your bases, I use sheetrock mud on mine. Once the mud dries I paint over them with dry brushing and add the grass. Keep up the hard work

Loved this watched it twice already and probably will again these are the kind of vids needed across the board in this hobby ,basing is one of the hardest parts I find and for me it's a make or break it ,usually the latter 😀 great vid mate

I do something similar. When I do ranked troops I glue down the rear rank first and apply filler around that rank and then glue the front rank and do the filler. I find it was less fiddly getting around all those legs.

Frazier, for my bases rather than mixing up each time I buy a tub of ready mixed dark coloured tile jointing. It has the glue built in, it lasts as long as you put the top on properly. After putting the mix on I scatter on some sand, and spray with a little water.

Great vid buddy. For years I was just using white filler, then a couple of years ago someone mentioned putting paint in it. Been kicking myself ever since. So obvious, can’t believe I didn’t think of it lol. Can highly recommend Tajima tufts

Very interesting mate. I can’t deny the results look great, but that’s way too many steps for me. I’m all about the geek gaming base ready these days. Slap it on, add a few tufts and you’re good to go. 😂

Thank you for this tutorial; very informative. Have you ever put the filler onto the base before the miniatures? I wonder if that way it’d be easier to spread it on and could be used instead of glue to hold the miniatures to the base. Might be a way to speed up the process a bit.

I do this at times and it works. Apply layer of filler over the entire base, firmly push mini's in, then use a brush to smooth it over the edges of the figures base. I'm more inclined to do it with plastics than heavy metals though..

No offence, but you could have condensed that down to about 2 minutes. It’s like a cooking video when they show how to cut an onion and then another one etc…. You didn’t actually start basing until nearly 10 minutes in 🤦🏻‍♂️
