Great video son! I can’t help but brag on this son of ours! So proud of his accomplishments as a pilot but his dedication to keep the farm in the family. He and his cousin Van will be the fifth generation farmers here!! An honor to be his parents! 😘

We've had that bake feeder for a few years now. The cattle tend to clean the hay up better versus when we roll it down a hill.

Hello Rod. My girlfriend and I really enjoy your podcast. Great job. I flew as an Air Weapons Director in the 80s and 90s on the E3 AWACS out of Tinker. I've done hundreds of tanker intercepts in the U.S. and Europe. It's fun to watch your podcast and remember. I've had four fam flights on the KC135. Tell us more about yourself. Your commissioning source, where did you go to UPT, did you fly on active duty before the Ohio ANG? Tell us about your family. Overall, outstanding podcast. I'm listening to you apologize for your content, not interesting, too long, not enough airplanes. No need to apologize. Your content has our attention. Kudos to you. Keep it up.

Thanks for the encouragement Michael and thank you for your service! I'll give you a brief summary of how I got to where I am. -Tried to go to AF Academy, but I was too dumb. -Went to Ohio University and was in ROTC for two years, but ultimately I was immature and basically flunked out. -Took about a year off, then went to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach. -Was is ROTC there for a couple weeks, but wanted to go to the beach versus go to PT in morning, so I dropped ROTC. -Graduated in August of 2001 with most of my civilian flight ratings, but then Sep 11th happened, so any hopes of going to a regional airline were done. -Commisioned through OTS in 2002. -Was a C-130 navigator for about two years at Pope AFB. -Graduated from pilot training (Laughlin AFB) in Dec of 2007. -Flew tankers at Seymour-Johnson AFB and Altus AFB. -Spent 3 years at Scott AFB as a staff officer (hated it!) -In 2018, left AD and came to the Ohio ANG. I'll have 20 years of active service in mid-2024, but don't know if Ill keep going or get out.

@@ohioflyingfarmer7050 Thank you for your response. Everyone has a story to tell, some more interesting than others. Your story is interesting. I scored high on the AFOQT and was offered UPT. I didn't think I was smart enough to be a pilot. I said no thank you to the offer. When I got to AWACS as time permitted I was in the jump seat whenever possible. The time I spent in the cockpit convinced me I was smart enough to be a pilot. I went to an FBO at Westheimer airport (Norman) and earned my private license. I was 32, don't I wish I could get that no to UPT back. I enjoyed my AF career. One of my highlights is a fam ride in an F15 in the Mediterranean north of Sardinia. We pulled 7.5 Gs, and went Mach 1.2. On the way back to base my pilot let me fly and talked me through a right aileron roll. Friggin' awesome! Enough about me. I want to hear more of your story. Tell your audience how you got where you are in your videos. You are an interesting man with an interesting story. Btw, I'm an OTS graduate also. Commissioned 10 Dec 80.

Col. I’m going to take you way back to mid 60’s when I joined the WVANG and our Unit had C-119C Flying Boxcars with R4360’s. I became a FE/FM and we later got C-119G’s with R3350’s and later converted to “L”s. I flew for almost 9 years. We retired the very last 119’s in the inventory in 1975 and got C-130E’s, then later “H”s. I flew as a C-130 DCC for 7 months in Theater during Desert Storm. My brother was also a Pilot in our Unit. (Our Unit just got Super “J”s). I Retired in 1998. Our Dad served in WWII and then in our ANG Unit when it was first formed in 1947 and during the Korean War on AD in 1950. Great video! Brings back memories of younger days. I was surprised to see you still actually using the old style silo. So many are sitting empty and abandoned now. That feeding system is pretty sweet. Hauling round bales in trucks is pretty cool. Better hold on to those long bed trucks because they don’t make many of those and I suspect that when they get done ramming these damn electric vehicles down our throats there won’t be any trucks that can haul anything.

I consider our farm to be rather "traditional", so we still do some things that others don't. Funny you mentioned long bed trucks. I had always been a Chevy guy, but was looking for a new truck about 4 years ago. I could not find a long bed Chevy, so I switched to Ford. Not impressed so far!

Please never apologize for your content I enjoy planes and farming. I was a AMS in the Navy from 79-86 and went on to working for Grumman, Lockheed, and Boeing Aerospace Companies grew up just south of you so I enjoy both. My brother got his A&P license from Emory Riddle, I got out of working on military planes after being laid off so many times not enough seniority when contracts expired. My brother stayed with it and is still working for Northrop Grummans at Cecil Field Florida and the ironic thing is he’s working in the same hanger I was in while in the Navy. While at Cecil Field I was plane captain of the A7 Corsair and one day we all see this new jet come in and it was of the first test F18’s I believe it was #3 if I remember correctly boy were we all shocked at the technology of that plane, they were going around showing the squadron’s who were going be upgraded to the F18 when they went on line but I got out before our squadron got them. Now my brother works on upgrading the F18 Super Hornets, small world and he’s an Army vet Calvary Scout did most of his time at Fort Knox, KY.

@@ohioflyingfarmer7050 Brother the cockpit with it’s three computer screens was like seeing a space ship, no analog gauges, no old bowling pin switches, computer read outs for all the oil levels, had to use an asbestos glove that went up to you elbow to pull the dip stick to check oil on the A7 Corsair within 5 minutes after shut down. Computer read outs throughout the F18 we were in fantasy land and when the pilot left he told us to stay and watch he was going to show us something we had never seen before he got about 10’ off the runway and he turned straight up and I could see the runway shooting off sparks from the after burners now scenes like that are all over the internet. That was really great to see that in the early 80’s but they told us to keep our mouths shut about that so it was years before I said anything about it. I’d love to see the F22 & F35 up close and see just how far technology has progressed since then I bet I’d be blown away.

@ohioflyingfarmer7050

It is called a silo unloader. It basically rotates around the interior of the silo and has a chain that drags the silage to the center and then blows it out the chute on the side of the silo. Pretty handy machine. If we didn't have this, we would have to throw it out the side using pitch forks! Huge labor saver!

Yes, we like it. The cattle do seem to waste a lot less hay. Sometimes we roll the bales down a hill the traditional way, but some of the hay is either tramped n, or the cattle lay in it. I think we paid around $12k for this unit 3 years ago.

Dear Heavenly Father, We come before you today with grateful hearts, recognizing the abundance of blessings that you have provided. We lift up in prayer all the cows that roam the fields and pastures, creatures of your creation. We thank you for the sustenance they provide to nourish our bodies and the resources they offer for our well-being. May your loving care extend to these gentle beings, watching over them with kindness and compassion. Lord, we ask for wisdom and stewardship in our use of the resources you have given us, that we may honor and respect all living creatures, including the cows that graze upon the earth. May we be mindful of the interconnectedness of all life and appreciate the role each creature plays in your divine plan. Bless those who work in the fields and care for the animals, guiding them to act with love and responsibility. May we be good stewards of the earth and the creatures that inhabit it. In your holy name, we pray. Amen.

No, we have never tried AI. That seems to be a complicated process and we really don't have toe facilities or setup to do that right now. Maybe someday?
